Marlene. I goofed and deleted your message I am looking for Rita Garcia
(sometimes spelled Gracia) Parents Antonio Garcia and Maria Francisca Dutra or
Souza. the Portuguese records that I have show her born 14 Aug 1850 and
died, no date. The 1880 census show her living in California age 30 born in
Portugal. Father arrived in Ca. 1850 no more children born until 1861. Have no
record of Mothers arrival. I wonder if she waited 10 years before she came to U
S.
Thanks for any help

Some Pico records are online though the University of Minho web site, I
think. I don't research Pico, but the people who do will let you know if
they are online. They are not on the CCA web site yet.

Hi Lionel,
Although Niteroi is so near to Rio I kind of discovered it now,
looking for (and finding) long lost cousins. You see, we cariocas
always considered Niteroi's best feature THE WONDERFUL VIEW FROM RIO..
(lol) But since I got in touch with my cousins I've been there several
times and it is a really nice place - looks as though we're very far
from Rio, so different things look there...
What's your relation with Doug da Rocha Holmes?
Hope we stay in touch

I'm new at this list and I tried to read all the messages posted in
the past but there are too many!I
Does anyonw knows how to get help to find  Christening and Marriage
data at the Azores? My great-grandfather, MANUEL RAPOSO DOS SANTOS,
came to Brazil (haven't found any reference of how and when, yet) and
married my brazilian great-grandmohter in Niterói - a town near Rio de
Janeiro, where I live. He was from VILA DE NORDESTE, NORDESTE, ILHA DE
SÃO MIGUEL. His parents were ANTÓNIO RAPOSO DOS SANTOS and
BARBARA LEITE MACHADO DOS SANTOS and he was born around 1840, 1841 -
according to his death certificate he died when he was 56, on May,
25th.1897. I know the records of Christenings from that period must
already be at Ponta Delgada, for its over 100 years anda I wrote the
chief of the Public Library and she said they would help but never
 wrote back.
1- Do you people, since you have much more experience, think I should
 keep on insisting?
2- Do any of you know of someone in Azores who may be interested in
exchanging information? I presently have all of my family on records
and I am willing to help searching records on Librarys and other
places here in Rio de Janeiro.
3- Is there another way to reserach (I already ordered the LDS mfs
from Nordeste, Azores) without visiting Azores? I plan to go someday
 but right now is impossible.,.
If any of you need help translating documents from Portuguese to
English I am at you disposal.
Thank you so much for you help

2009-05-26 Thread Lufox

Hi Cheri,
Thank you so much for you help. I've already ordered the LDS mfs for
the Azores but they're taking an awfully long time to
arrive...sometimes almost an year!!!
The only reason I asked about insisting on the local research was
because the chief of Biblioteca Publica - to whom I wrote some time
ago (through an Azores Genealogy web site - don't remember which one)
said she would foward my request for a trained technician in the
Archives (sic)and that she thought would be very easy to find the
records. Do you understand portuguese? See what she wrote:
Exma. Senhora
pretende pois indica o nome, a freguesia e a data. É natural que lhe
perguntem se quer uma fotocópia do registo e deverá ter de pagar algo
por isso.
I apologize for my curiosity but why would insisting make it worse
for of everybody?
I'll keep you posted with my findings.
abraços

 HI Lufox,

Since you have the 3 vital pieces: the name of Manuel Raposo dos Santos,
that he was from Nordeste, born to Antonio Raposo dos Santos and Barbara
Leite Machado in 1840-41, you need to search the film ( # 1438017 ) for
every Manuel born to Antonio and Barbara until you find him.

 Your questions:
 1) Yes, the archives do hold the records from the 1840s, but they don't
search for you.  They may look for a range, but I wouldn't insist.  It may
make it worse for the rest of us.

 2)  Most of us on this list are west of the Azores (somewhere in North
America), although we have other members.  Some are in the Azores, New
Zealand, and I forget where else I've seen people say where they live.

 3) The only way to research for Nordeste at this time is to go to the
archives in Ponta Delgada or order the microfilm.  Someday, the Center for
Knowledge of the Azores (CCA) will put the records online.  However, they
don't publish I time line for putting the records online or in what order,
so we don't when.  Sao Jorge island is almost complete.  That island took
about 2 years to put online, I believe.

 Hope this helps!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: RAPOSOS , MACHADOS and LEITES f rom Vila de Nordeste, São Miguel

2009-05-26 Thread Cheri Mello
Luciana,

Did you send money? I don't think they will look without payment, name,
date, and freguesia.

Sometime institutions will become tired of genealogists and refuse to help
any of them. Whether that is in your location, mine, or the Azores. I
wouldn't be insistent, as you said, but if you did not include any money,
then include it as ask if they are now able to fulfill your request.

I don't know where you live or why your FHC films take a year. You need to
ask the director at your FHC why it takes so long. I haven't ordered film
in a while, but I think it took about 4-6 weeks for a film to come from Utah
to CA, where I live.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Abbreviations - how far do we go?

2009-05-26 Thread Cheri Mello
I know certified genealogists abbreviate nothing. They leave no question as
to what they are talking about.

In my genealogy program, I don't abbreviate the freguesia, church, island or
Azores. I do abbreviate in somewhat in emails. I was abbreviating county
(as in Los Angeles Co) and I was abbreviating California as CA but CA is
also Canada, isn't it? I was thinking of changing to California, but CA is
in the state field and Canada (I spell out the countries) is in the country
field. Which *seems* clear until you do an export/import. I see strange
things in the fields when I import people's Gedcoms.

I was wondering how far people abbreviate? If anyone found my work, they'd
know most of what I had in my program because of the limited abbreviations,
but I was thinking of dropping all of them.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Abbreviations - how far do we go?

2009-05-26 Thread eric edgar

Cheri,

I tend to abbreviate county to co. but spell out the state and most
every thing else because I'm often handing a report to someone with an
interest in, but no experience in geneaolgy.
If they want to pick up and go on with the research then it is clear
which county to look for more records. My own notes are mostly
abbreviations
