[AZORES-Genealogy] Property Information
Has anyone had any experience researching who owns property in the Sao Miguel. My grandparents owned property but over the years its was abandoned. It was never sold or tranfered that I am aware of. I don't know who officialy owns the property now. No taxes have been paid since 1960's. I am not sure if the village took over the ownership. Does anyone know a way to research property ownership. Suzanne, It's one of those cases such as Los Angeles is in Los Angeles County. Velas (the city or vila) is in the council (or county) of Velas. Go to the CCA web site, click on the Parish Registers on the right, then look for Sao Jorge (island) and click on the council of Velas, then click on the freguesia of Velas on the next page (last one). Looks like this freguesia is still coming online. Once upon a time, the records were in order. The priest wrote them in the book chronologically. However, over time, the bindings may have come apart. They try to keep the pages in order, but once in a while they are out of order. Sometimes it is noted in the filming that the pages are out of order. Nancy Jean Beira is with Velas records as far as I am aware. I have several lines that say Beira and they were found in the Velas Baptismal/Marriage/Death records. Cheri, I do not abbreviate. Because, if I do and later someone reads what I wrote may not interrupt the word(s) the same way I intended. Therefore, I spell out all the words. I even sometimes changed other people's abbreviated words to the full spelling of the word. Sao Jorge (for the island), Velas (for the council), Velas (for the freguesia), Baptismos (for baptisms - that's all they have for Velas right now), and Ver (go see the records). Suzanne, Yes, most genealogists spend hours and hours looking. That's the only way to do it. Unless you pay a researcher to do your tree for you if you don't want to do it yourself.
