Hi Shirley,
I wonder if Rosa Jacintha's father is related to my great-great-
grandmother, Barbara Leite Machado. Afterall, São Miguel is not so big
or very populated nowadays - imagine back in the 1800s...Considering
Rosa Jacintha's birth she may have been Barbara's cousin or niece.

 Hi Rick,

I'm also researching da Costa, Carvalho Pimentel, Placido, de Mello,
Medeiros Bento,de Rezendes from Santa Maria.

I just received documentation from Sao Miguel in which it says one of my
ancester f's name was Francisco Carvalho Pimentel and that he was from
Vila do Nordeste his wife was Rosa Jacinta. I don't have any dates but I'm
guessing mid 1850's for their birthdates.

If you or any one with information would be a big help.

 Thank you.

If it has been several months since ordering I would check with the local

 Luciana,

Did you send money? I don't think they will look without payment, name,
 date, and freguesia.

Sometime institutions will become tired of genealogists and refuse to help
any of them. Whether that is in your location, mine, or the Azores. I
wouldn't be insistent, as you said, but if you did not include any money,
then include it as ask if they are now able to fulfill your request.

I don't know where you live or why your FHC films take a year. You need to
ask the director at your FHC why it takes so long. I haven't ordered film
in a while, but I think it took about 4-6 weeks for a film to come from
Utah to CA, where I live.

[AZORES-Genealogy] War in 1910's? about ggrandfather Jose Rego Vital from Lagoa, S. Miguel

2009-06-06 Thread Jesse

Hi. My great-great grandfather was José Rego Vital (1889-1956). My
grandmother told me he came to America to escape a war. I was
wondering if anyone had any information about this because I haven't
heard anything else. He came over in 1913.

Also, I cannot find immigration records for him or his wife Maria dos

I think he comes from a big family of Rego Vitals. I have found many
records on ancestry.com, especially draft cards, with RV's but I can
never decide whether it's one of his brothers or if it's a cousin.
There were many boys but few names; Jose, Manuel, Antonio, Joao,

I think WWI was 1914-1918 or so. How did he know there would be a World War
the following year?

I don't think you could use fake names to come over. Even people who tried
to sneak onto the boat were caught. Two good books on migration to America
are John P. Colletta's They Came In Ships and Michael Teppers's American
Passenger Arrival Records. See if your local library has them.

2009-06-06 Thread Maria Sousa
I don't know much about Portuguese history, but your post made me think.

My family originates from the north of Portugal in Valenca do Minho.  It
borders the Galicia border of Spain.  My grandmother used to tell me her
stories.  She was born in 1900.  Her father was all for the monarchy and around
1910, 1911, the monarchy ended.  Her father, my g-grandfather was devastated.
She remembers when she was a young teenager, she could hear the cannons and how
many soldiers went off to battle.  I don't know if this was about some sort of
revolution that took the monarchy down or if they were battling with Spain, but
the dates match with Jesse's.

I also don't know how the monarchy affected the Azores, but many men were
probably called to battle.

Yes, he does come from Lagoa! It'd be wonderful if this line IS related

My source on the immigration year is the 1920 US Census if anyone is

looks promising. Thanks everyone for helping out this new member of the

2009-06-06 Thread Ginger

Hello Maria Sousa,

Thank you for your post. It reminds me of what I over heard as a
child. My dad (born in th USA 1917) had said that his ancestor
'family' had been well to do in the Azores. There was a some sort of
political overthrow that caused the remaining family members in the
Azores to be rendered financially ruined.

Unfortunately, I don't know the details. Perhaps, once the political
coup occured in Mainland Portugal, it spread to the Azores. At that
time, wasn't the Azores still considered part of Portugal? In other
words, the Azores wasn't an autonomous region at that time, was
it?

I apologize for my lack of Portuguese history. I am third generation
American and my parents never shared family history directly with us
children.
