I got a long time ago a site for ships lists from someone from an older group list I was on. I found my grandparents came over on the SS Cretic. The site is http://immigrantships.org. Passenger Lists, click on Volume 1 which will have an index for the 1000 manifests transcribed in that volume. You can search by the year link, departure port, arrival port or name of ship. Near the bottom of the index page you can search by Surname and Captain's name by clicking on the letter starting the Surname. I got the picture of the ship when I googled it. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: trip to Ponta Delgado
Hi Mary Ann, I spent 4 days at the archive in Ponta Delgada 2 weeks ago. The archive is behind a park and there may be a bust of someone; however, I was looking for the building and did not notice anything in the park. The hours are 9am until 5pm Monday through Friday (unless there is a holiday). I don't know the holidays so I can't help you there. I filled out a slilp of paper stating the name of the village, the type of book, baptismo, casamento or obito, and the year/years I wanted. There is a blonde lady there that was most helpful. Another thing I found very useful was free access to the internet so I could check my email and write home each day. I also stayed at a residential (no coffee served) that had a kitchen if you wanted to do the food thing. It had no name; however, all the taxi drivers know it as 51 Rua do Mel. The cost was 25 euros with private bath and 15 euros without. I do not think you can beat that. Rua do Mel is directly across the square from the main doors of the Matriz, near everything and a 10 minute walk up the hill to the archive. Of course, if you get lost like I did the second day, it takes 30 minutes before I got my bearings! My favorite taxi driver, Carlos Rego (no one knows him by Rego because his family nick name is Sha-pot-ah, at least when I asked for him where the taxi cabs park near the City Arches they all knew him. They told me he was on a trip; however, he would be back soon. Carlos returned, even recognized me and took me to the village where I wanted to see if confession rolls existed (they didn't) and to find the man in Ribeira Grande who helped the priest with the books in that village. Carlos has always been most interested in helping me find that for which I search. This trip, I think he was more disappointed than I when I did not find Maria Cristo's baptism. If you stay at 51 Rua do Mel, there is a coffee place just down the street where I had coffee every morning. I arrived about 8am, had coffee with a young lady that works near there and speaks English very well. Her name is Catarina, she has dark hair and she has even emailed me since I arrived home to make sure I arrived safely. All in all, the Sao Miguel part of my trip was great. I researched at the archive, rested, met some great people and even managed to do all my shopping for those at home home while I was in Ponta Delgada. Forgot to say the room was very clean and I had to go look for staff on the day I was leaving to pay my bill. I guess I could have walked away without paying??? OK, I found this from 2004. I think I was last there in 2002. The closest to the library/archive is the Residential Sao Miguel (Residentials are considered 2nd class motels/boarding houses) and the Comfort Inn. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: trip to Ponta Delgado
Mary Ann, I don't know what you mean by being in Ponta Delgada in years. It used to be on a street called Rua do Ernesto do Canto. They moved to up to the north, near a jardim (jardin? - garden) next to the old Jesuit college. The address that I have for the Biblioteca Pública e Arquivo de Ponta Delgada is on Rua Largo Colegio. I would think any taxi driver could find it. It sort of looks like it has a glass atrium on top. If I remember right, the archives are on the top floor. It's on a corner. To the right is an old, dark colored stone Jesuit college. I don't know why I think Jesuit. I could be another Catholic order. The last time I stayed in S.Miguel, I stayed in a residential. I think it was called Residental de Sao Miguel, but I'm not sure. The price wasn't bad. I had my own bath. It was more budget like - you could think of it as a Portuguese Motel 6, I suppose. In the mornings, they had pequeno almoço which was more like cheese and crackers for breakfast. I don't drink coffee, so I don't remember what they had to drink. I found a Coca-Cola Light or Pepsi-Light on my way there. I could walk to the biblioteca, so it wasn't that far. I know I saw something like a Days Inn or Comfort Inn or something like that. Also, they have the larger hotels that are more resort like, as well, if that suits you. What priest are you refering to in your email? My cousin, Padre Anton de Sousa Rocha from Ribeira Grande is my cousin. He is a retired priest and writing a book, but he's not well and waiting to see if he finishes it. Was the girl Catarina that you might last name Costa? My other cousin is Catarina Costa though she is going to the University in Coimbra and from Ribeira Grande, I'm not sure if she works in Ponta Delgada now. I'd love to go back there. I haven't been there since 2003. I still have quite a few cousins there. Since my parents are now deceased, it's going to be much harder corresponding with them, but I won't stop trying.
