[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Photos of Ships
Thanks but that wasn't me looking for pictures of the ships it was another lister, Marie. I was the one who told her to go to the http://immigrantships.org without the www. It was Cheri who found another one similar through www. Some people think they have to use the www on the url to get what they are looking for. I have my picture of the SS Cretic a while back. I didn't think about Google Images which is a great site. [AZORES-Genealogy] Faja do Santo Christo
It saddened me to read Nancy Jean Baptiste's account of her stay at what my family found to be one of the most intriguing places we've ever visited. When we spent the month of May on Sao Jorge, there were few visitors to the faja, and the trashy environment non-existent during our mid-week treks. We did hear summer brings a steady stream of visitors, and party goers, a disturbing thought that Nancy Jean's experiences seem to confirm. Sao Jorge is home to my Azorean ancestors, and I may be biased. But we found the island to be refreshingly natural, clean and hugely welcoming. We had the privilege of staying in a wonderful roomy house on a hillside overlooking Velas, the Atlantic and the volcano looming on Pico beyond. I can put anyone interested in contact with the owner. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Did you visit the Azores in 2009?
End of July/early August for me. Five nights on Faial, with a day trip to Sao Jorge. One day/night on Pico and two nights in Flores. No luck on the genealogical aspect, however, despite half a day in the record office in Horta. But when I do make the break~through, I've photographs of all thirteen Faial parish churches (think I got them all) to connect with. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Bristol, RI marriage record
Yes, Cheri I looked for deaths from 1868 to 1894. The first born child, Maria (of course) was born in 1868 and 1894 was 5 years before the father died. Mother would have been 51 years old then. The obitos were where I found that 3 of the siblings had died as infants. I looked for the marriage of the first Maria and did not find it. She could have married in a different village and she also could have had a child out of wedlock and had it baptized in a different village. I looked for the birth of a Maria with either parents or grandparents with the names of the parents. I looked for all the Marias whose mother was not married and then looked at the maternal grandparents. I did not find her. I just received an email from Bristol, RI from the Deputy Town Clerk and she said she will send me the marriage certificate and anything else she can find as soon as she received my check, application form and Bob's driver's license. It is all in the mail with a registered, return receipt. I will let the list know when the information arrives. Thanks for the suggestion, Celeste Celeste Perry ccgran...@yahoo.com --- On Wed, 9/9/09, Cheri Mello gfsche...@gmail.com wrote: From: Cheri Mello gfsche...@gmail.com Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Bristol, RI marriage record To: azores@googlegroups.com Date: Wednesday, September 9, 2009, 10:07 PM Celeste, You searched the baptisms for 1883-1894, but did you or the researchers check the marriage or the obit book for a baptism that was accidentally recorded in the wrong book? [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Bristol, RI marriage record
All, Looking at whatever other records are available with regard to marriages is important. This is not specifically relative to Portuguese documents but can have much merit in U.S. records. I was helping my wife look for a relative that we found was married in Iowa. We found this female in the Index to Marriage Register which gave limited information regarding the marriage. We were looking for her maiden name. From that Index we were able to obtain her Marriage License as well as her Certificate of Marriage. Neither of these documents gave any information relative to her maiden name. We then found that there also existed a Register of Marriages, apparently the first document filled out in the process of getting married. Low and behold, one of the pieces of information was the name of her Father and Mother's maiden name. If we had not looked for and found that fourth document we would have never been able to go back that additional generation. Check every document you can obtain because you never know what additional information might be present. Good luck. Tex (Walt Teixeira) On Sep 9, 2:34 pm, \E\ Sharp bellema...@gmail.com wrote: Sam and others, The Notice of Intention is the paper they filled out to obtain their marriage license. It basically has the same information on it as the Marriage Certificate but it is in their, or someone who filled it out for them, handwriting. It came from the New Bedford Vital Records office, I requested it the same time I requested the Marriage Certificate and I had to pay extra for it. I wanted this paper as I knew the bride's surname to be Pedro and it was recorded as Pedras and I wanted to see what was on this form and one can interpret it as Pedro or Pedras as far as I can see. So, if RI does not have this form, I would hope the same info would be on the RI Marriage Certificates. It contains: Name Color Residence Age Occupation Birthplace Father's Name Mother's Maiden Name 1st, 2nd, etc. marriage Widowed or Divorced Signature of Applicant (in this case, the grooms signature and address) Then statement such and such personally appeared before me and that the foregoing statement is true... I do have a copy of a RI Copy of a Marriage Record from 1946. It has the above on it PLUS it even has parent's birthplace and father's occupation for both bride/groom and gives Place of Marriage, Date, Clergyman/Denomination/Address, Witnesses. Also, gives place and date of divorce. Whether it was the same in the early 1900's, I do not know. In Ponta Delgada this year I saw several people with digital cameras taking pictures of the pages in the books. I had the clerk make copies of the pages I needed. They were .50 euros per document. I know that it is better to put your camera on a mount. Your breathing, heart rate, etc will shake the camera. A woman in my local genealogy group recommended this: http://www.gscassociates.com/mount_manual.html She bought that mount (it's $31 USD). I'm still unsure about that or if I want to take the film to the copy room and make a copy. Something about having a hard copy in my hands! LOL. It must be similar to my American cousin (in her 70s) who is finally starting to get into genealogy seriously. I'm getting her to put it into her genealogy program, but if I ask her something, she won't go to her genealogy program - she goes to her hard copy that she prints out! Guess I better get over this. I suppose though I can do the digital and take the hard copy for a quarter just to calm my nerves. I'm sure, Patt (woman from my genealogy group) would laugh at me!
