RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry.com iPhone App

2010-01-20 Thread Lew White
When I switched from the PC to the Mac, I switched from Family Tree Maker to
Reunion, which also has an iPhone app. The conversion was straightforward
and it's handy having all the information on the iPhone. It seems easier to
talk to people without a laptop (less intimidating?). However, the total
cost was $130.

Hi everyone. I don't know who else uses an iPhone but Ancestry just
launched their app. It's free and worth trying. The most interesting
feature is the ability to take and upload photos directly from the
app. There is no family tree view in this version though. If you have
an iPhone though, you might still prefer to view Ancestry from Safari.
The app is free though, so it's worth a try.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Amelia Candida Enos

2010-01-20 Thread nancy jean baptiste

Hi Al and Marek,

I also have Enos family. This name has been very mysterious but very important
to my family. I still haven't discovered why though.

My Ggrandfather, Joseph Victorino, came from Sao Jorge in the late 1880's to
New Bedford. In the 1900 census he used the name Joseph Enos, his marriage
papers have 2 different names listed on the civil and parish records.one
gives his father as Thomazo Veira and the other says Thomazo Oliveira.he
never used either of those names. In the 1910 census he had changed his named
to Victorino..the odd part is that my ggrandmother, Francisca Rosa de Lemos
always gave her name as Frances Enos and they named my grandmother, Clara Enos
Victorino..so it was an important name to them but I have no idea why! To
further confuse the issue my Mom said that the story went that when he came
over the immigration people changed his name from Jose Bettencourt to Jose
Victorino..I've looked for the name in the Sao Jorge records...Enos that is
and for any man named Thomazo married to an Ana Joaquina.but have found
nothing.

Regards,

Nancy Jean Baptista

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Amelia Candida Enos

2010-01-20 Thread Jacki G.
I don't know if this will be of any help to any of you looking for Enos' but
back in the late 1920's through 1950's or so Bay Point, Ca (Contra Costa
County) was known as Enes Tract. Most of the people in that area were from
the Azores. My mother was born there. She is a Medeiros.

The Enes' built most of the homes there, which is why it was called that. I
don't know all of their names but there was Christopher (my brother's
godfather), Albert and Bernard. I know the name is spelled a little
different but that happens sometimes. There is a street there in Bay Point
named Enes Street. There were a number of other portuguese families there
also. The one's I can remember are: Evora, Dutra, Medeiros, Mendonsa,
Pereira, Alvernaz, Azevedo and of course Enes. It was a small community made
up of a few streets with houses and a number of large ranches. The last
ranch to be sold to make way for new housing was the Alvernaz ranch which
was sold about 8 or 9 years ago and became the San Marcos housing tract
adjacent to highway 4.

Like I said, I don't know if this info is helpful at all but I thought I
would throw it out there just in case.

That is so true. I remember the pickle smell on our way to Oakland via
San Pablo Avenue. Brings back fond memories.

Hayward and San Leandro.

I haven't seen San Leandro mentioned. lots of Portuguese there also.
Some streets have Portuguese names.

and was originally founded by Portuguese people for Portuguese people.

Hi Eric,

Thank you for that information.

I wonder if the supposedly un-related MOURA families in the Oakland
area connected up with each other.

 Betty,

The weekly Portuguese newspaper O Portugal first appeared in New Bedford,
Massachusetts, started by Alberto Moura of Chaves, Portugal, who sold
the
newspaper two years later and moved to California.

Alberto was an Attorney, also had a Portuguese languague paper in
Oakland .
Mt wife's grandparents bought his house in East Oakland abt 1943 .
Many of
 his books were left behind.

  I'll look at a connection.

  Hello,

I found out last year that Francisco Frank MOURA and his family
probably lived in Oakland, CA.And I believe that is right beside
San Francisco. So, I'm curious if there was and is a large
   Portuguese / Azorean community there.

Elsie MOURA arrived in Boston, MA ~1905, and possibly with a sister,
Rosa MOURA, both young girls. I don't know who they traveled
with. Their mother and younger sister, Carolina, arrived ~1910 to
join them. They had 2 brothers, Francisco MOURA and Manuel MOURA,
and I only have tidbits of information on them.I'm guessing they
arrived shortly after 1910.I don't know if they lived in
different MA cities before they left the state.Manny moved to
Brooklyn, NY, where census shows other MOURA families lived. But,
Frank moved to reportedly wine country in CA. I found out it was
probably Oakland.Elsie was my (now) husband's grandmother.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Rosetta Stone

2010-01-20 Thread gregorylima tds.net
I did get a demo CD and it really does work. The demonstration used
Turkish and I learned more than I thought I ever would. I've wanted
to use Rosetta Stone to learn Portuguese. The only thing is, they
offer only Brazilian Portuguese which is different from the European
version. I check periodically with Rosetta Stone to see if they've
added it...as of last month they hadn't but they always tell me to
keep checking...the more inquiries they get the more likely they'll
add it.

Hope this helps
