[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Blood Groups

2010-03-20 Thread mikeg
Thank you, Chris, for your very informative response.

I can  answer your questions generally .
The ABO blood groups and the Rh (D) blood groups are not connected.
They are the most common of the blood groups tested because they cause
 the biggest transfusion reactions.
 Roughly
47% of Caucasians are Group O
41% of Caucasians are Group A
 09%                           Group B
 03%                           Group AB

The Rh group derive their name from the Rhesus monkey in which they
 were first found.
When we say Rh Negative that is only part of the story. I.e only the D
out of CDE are tested for. When you are tokd you are Rh negative you
are Rh (D) Negative. This is understood by all persons working with
 blood groups.

 Roughly
75% of Caucasians are Rh (D) Positive
 25% are Rh (D) Negative

There were no Rh Negatives among Asian,  Polynesian or Mealaneaian
 populations
but we ALWAYS tested these people in case they were of mixed blood and
did not know it. I think from the dim recesses of my mind I remember
the Basques having a higher percentage of Rh (D) negatives.
Unless a person was D negative we did not test the whole Allele of
which there are many combinations e.g cdE/cde.

Apart from transfusion treatment the main danger of antibody formation
in negative women during pregnancy has been overcome by the ability of
doctors now to give an antiserun which blocks the troublesome antigens
thus preventing antibody formation and eliminating the dreadful Rh
disease of pregnancy we used to see.

Wether there is a higher incidence of Rh negatives among Azoreans I do
 not know.
Certainly my own daughter is B Rh Negative.

this is very quick and i hope it is of some use.

This is interesting in my opinion..after Lisa's first email I looked on
line at sites regarding rh- factor..ALL kinds of information..but
now I'm curious about the blood types among Azoreans.I'm also 100%
Azorean Portuguesemy dad was A+ and my mom is O-all 6 children have
type A blood..only myself and my youngest sister have RH-.I wonder
if type A is prevelant among our population?

Also.this is the kind of information I was looking at (DNA) online
several years ago when I came across this group.what a fortunate find!

Good morning all. I am hoping someone here will be able to answer this
question for me, as it is pertains to 4 of my 9 living children.

What Percentage of people of Portuguese ethnicity is RH -? I have just
found out, due to the pregnancy of my daughter that she is RH- and due to
her father's ethnicity, is very doubtful that negative factor came from his
 genetics.

While I am on the subject, I suppose I ought to explain a little more. I
have 9 living children, 7 girls, 2 boys. I have been married twice, and from
the first union, I had 2 girls, one of which is o- rh factor; I lived with a
man and had one female child with him, whom is also rh - (a-), and then
married my current husband and we had 6 more children, 2 of which (girls)
are also rh-( one is* O-* one is *A-)**. *
My mother is Swedish, scottish, indian and my father is full blooded
 portuguese.
my mother blood type is *O +* , my fathers blood type is *A+, *and mine is
 *A+.*

from the research I have done,it is extremely rare for native american,
black, and scottish peoples to carry the rh negative factor, but a race of
people called BASQUES have a very high rate of rh negative blood. Is the
Portuguese race considered Basque? and What is the ratio of negative blood
 type in the Portuguese Race?
Any help in this matter would be appreciated.
