Re: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Maria de Jesus Gerevas born 1843 the Acores
Cheri, Erastus Bartlett was the person he went to work for when he came to the US. Jose(ph) nameshim as his "adopted" father but I have a feeling he never adopted him but he took his surname for US records (you know the Portuguese naming thing). He is listed in 1870 living with Erastus and family as a farm worker under the name Jose Alvis. I lucked out finding one of his children's birth records that showed he came from Faial/Fayal; otherwise I don't think there are any other records showing where in the Azores he came from. I also think his real name was Jose Alves. Any Alves from Faial? He came to this country about 1865/70 as far as I can tell. I checked ship manifests but no luck, maybe NEPS site will have something? The family also believes he might have been born Jose Gerevas but the only Jose Gerevas I have been able to find in the one in CA and it is not the same person. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Maria de Jesus Gerevas born 1843 the Acores
Frank, Well, with Faial (old spelling Fayal) you could try the NEPS database. I don't think all freguesias (villages) of Faial are represented, but all you have to do is check the births for a Jose born to a Erastus Gervais. Erastus is more of a unique name. NEPS (Nucleo de Estudos de Populacao e Sociedade): http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/index.html Click on the first link under Faial on the left (Praia de Almox..) Click on the arrow (it's curved) at the bottom. Click on the British flag (7th one) to make it go to English. Others who use the database will be able to give you tips and tricks to make the names come up (more relevant matches). Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Maria de Jesus Gerevas born 1843 the Acores
Frank, I had a friend of mine look up your records and here is what we found so it look like your Joseph was born on the island of Faial, Azores. Now what his real surname is, remains to be seen. Marriage: Joseph A. Bartlett m. Sarah Black Boston - April 10, 1878 On marriage, it has him b. Deering NH, but on birth of Harvey it has Fayal W.I. Her middle init. is E. She was b. Charlestown. She was 24 and he 26. He was a provision dealer. Parents Erastus H and Sarah G. Her parents Peter and Susan marriage performed by Rev Alfred A Wright Boston. Births: Harvey Francis Bartlett Boston - b. Feb. 2, 1879 They lived at 2 Russell Pl. Harvey b. 2 Feb. Father is a salesman. Susie Lilian Bartlett Boston Sept. 25, 1880 Parents names same - rest of page too faint to read. According to the 1900 census they had 3 children born and 2 living, do you happen to know the name of the child that died between 1880/1900 censuses? Still looking for the right Joseph Bartlett on death records, I guess wrong on the first one. "E" -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. [AZORES-Genealogy] Posting to this list
Since we've had a many more new members now, I thought this would be a good time to review how to make a post to this list. 1) Open up or compose a new email. Address it to: Azores@googlegroups.com(or store that in your address book). 2) Subject: With about 750 people on this list, the subject line needs to be a little descriptive. During periods of high activity, many members cannot read every message. They scan the subject line for those that match their research needs. Therefore, your message may not be reaching all 750 people if the subject line isn't descriptive. I suggest a subject line with the surname and location if known. Pimentel from Horta, Faial or Pimentel from Horta, Faial 1800s is good too. "Help Me," "I'm lost," "I'm new" probably won't get many responses. 3) Post the name, dates (birth, marriage, death, immigration) for your ancestor. Whatever you know in the body of the email. 4) Sign your name and hit send :) What Not to Do: If the subject line is "Pimentel from Horta, Faial" and the author of the message says he married a gal with the surname of Mello, and that reminds you of your Mello line from Sao Miguel, DON'T hit reply to tell the list about it. The title of the thread (all the messages in that subject are linked together in a "thread") is still Horta, Faial, so Sao Miguel researchers who scan subject headings will miss your message. Start a new message. Also, don't edit the subject line from "Pimentel from Horta Faial" to "Mello on Sao Miguel." It only partially works (depending on which mail mode you are in). Because the messages are linked or threaded together, editing a subject line doesn't change the threading. People who read via the Web board or archives or people who are searching the archives may be searching for Mello on Sao Miguel, but why would they click on the link titled Pimentel from Horta Faial to find info on Sao Miguel (that's the way threading works, even though the subject has been edited). Just start a new message. This is to help everyone maximize the possibility of getting responses back to their original query. Happy Hunting and Posting! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Attention APGHS members
You are correct Cheri. The APGHS (American-Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society) materials are indeed housed at the Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese American Archives. These materials include the vast indexing system of known Portuguese immigrants to the United States that the APGHS put together, and their book collection. The materials are open for on-site public consultation without special arrangements. I will also add that we have the multi-volume genealogies for Ilha Terceira and Faial, Pico, Flores, Corvo that were published by the goverment of the Açores in the last couple of years. These too are open for on-site public consultation without special arrangements . I verified with the Direcção de Comunidades a couple of weeks ago: no other island genealogies have been published (in this format) , however, they do expect follow-up publications in the near future.
