Hello Group,

Could someone please take a look at the word after Sebastiam Teyxeira and let
me know what that means?  He is my 6th GGfather on my paternal side.

I think I know what it might mean but I don't wish to draw any conclusions
without some of your expert advice.

Thank you.

Yes it does look misleading. But I have seen it before. I think it is
mariante, which is the old mareante, which is indeed the same as
marineiro- a seaman or fisherman.

Hi Margaret,This is my first message after a couple years of absence from the list!...Your attachment seems, even to a Brazilian, as :  "marianse"...it would be a kind of occupation. As for the meaning of that (which I do not know...) it could bea "sea worker"  ("mar" means "sea") or maybe even a fisherman(pescador)... But, in any event a man tied to the sea. That is the best understanding I can take from it and share with you.It is not a name! However you didn´t share the year of that record That would beinteresting to know.Ary SantosSao Paulo-Brazil.

Hi. Thank you everyone
Now my head is REALLY spinning!! but I jest of courseIf it were easy I
would get bored and soon quit doing the research.

In answer to your question Nancy, Yes I have researched the de Costa, da
Costa,(both of which I have in my line) but wow there is so MANY Manuel de
Costa.
And the odd thing about your question of my spelling GALANTE or could it be
Goularte, for a long time I thought it was Goularte. But then My ggg
granmother's mother's name listed on california death index was Galante.
then ms. Shirley provided me with info that seems to verify his name to be
Galante.

Hello all. I hope everyone had a great, lovefilled Easter.

I am requesting some fresh ideas on a possible surname change of one of my
ancestors.

My ggg grandmother's brother, Manuel da Costa Galante, from Lagoa, N.S.
immigrated with his new bride to Hawaii in 1884 upon the ALBERGELDIE(think
thats right). His passport along with information from a book Ms. Shirley has
stated his whole name as that which is above.
Now my problem is I have searched all the subsequent census records up to 1910
in Hawaii, and I can not find any one with that last name, Galante. Does anyone
have any ideas of an alternative spelling of the last name, or maybe if it
would be usual for one to drop the last name and just go by "da Costa"??
Any suggestions and / or ideas would be appreciated.

Margaret,

It could very well be marrane. It's hard to read the ending letter (or two!). I
would look for other baptismal records of his children and see if it comes any

I tend to agree with JR but the problem is that at that time there are no

"marrane" is the early portuguese word for new christians.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Need another set of eyes

2010-04-10 Thread JR
Yes it does look misleading. But I have seen it before. I think it is
mariante, which is the old mareante, which is indeed the same as
marineiro- a seaman or fisherman.

Rosemarie,

At first glance is a little misleading and that is why I need help because it
clearly has 2 RR's and I read it as "marrane" and if this is true, the
ingrained customs and rules I was raised under start making sense.

Thanks for trying, Rosemarie.

Hello Group,

Could someone please take a look at the word after Sebastiam Teyxeira and let
me know what that means? He is my 6th GGfather on my paternal side.

I think I know what it might mean but I don't wish to draw any conclusions
without some of your expert advice.

Thank you.

But then My ggg
granmother's mother's name listed on california death index was Galante.
then ms. Shirley provided me with info that seems to verify his name to be
Galante.

Hi Lisa,

Are you sure it isn't a badly spelled Goularte? Did you search him as de
Costa?

Good luck!
