Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Antonio Jose de Sousa Pereira of Sao Jorge
Dear Mr. Fazendeiro, Can you please be more specific and I will try to help you. What do you know about your grandfather? Where was he born? Where did he live all his life? What you found is a menorah or a hanukiah? You say that the Jewish population in his time was 30%. Isn't this highly exagerated? Couldn't he have received/%bought the object from a Jew unrelated to the family, or just from a shop of old things? Best regards Inacio 2010/4/23 afazende...@comcast.net I am new to this group. Found a Menorah that my grandmother owned. It is driving me crazy because I cannot get any information. I think it belonged to my grandfather because my grandmother was a devote Catholic. He lived in the Azores when the jewish population was over 30%. How can I get more information. - Original Message - From: Shirley Allegre shir...@digitalpath.net To: azores@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, April 22, 2010 12:07:59 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Antonio Jose de Sousa Pereira of Sao Jorge Hi Nancy: I tried reading that marriage (4 June 1800) in Velas. [AZORES-Genealogy] Calouro from Ribeira Grande
Recently there was some inquiries/talk about the Calouros of Ribeira Grande on the list. I was reading Memórias da Ponte dos Oito Arcos da Ribeira Grande (Mário Fernando Oliveira Moura, Instituto Cultural de Ponta Delgada: 1996) and on pp. 298-299 it states: Meste António de Sousa Calouro--one of the bridge workmen The deposition of Father António Rocha on 19 Jan 1996: I am 72 years old and was born in 1923. My paternal grandfather, António de Sousa Calouro, known as Cardão) died in 1916 at almost 70 years old. He died before the war ended. He worked for the town's public works department. According to my mother, his oldest daughter, he had worked not only on the bridge, but also on the garden and the market. And the house of Outeiro de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, on the right, heading up, in a house belonging to a Paiva family that moved to Ponta Delgada, the house where Mr. Círio and where Engineer Furtado now lives, was built by him. I do not know any other details. These Cardão folks were a family of project laborers. He used to say that the projects that came through Mr. Rego Lima were always of more interest and greater profit than those that came through Mr. Serpa which had tighter budgets and were less lucrative. My uncles, Manuel, Jacinto, José and António Pedro, to distinguish him from my grandfather António, were all stone masons. My mother, who died 12 years ago, aged 91, told me that the owner of the house where Dr, Jorge Gamboa de Vasconcelos lived on S. Francisco Street, Mr. Frederico Serpa, was on the board of the Public Works Department in Ribeira Grande. He lived there until retiring and moving away to Ponta Delgada to live with his daughter D. Maria da Glória, married to Colonel Serpa Afonso. She would say that her father, Mestre António Cardão, workman of the town's public works under the direction of Frederico de Serpa, had worked on the bridge. Maybe this helps somebody.
