[AZORES-Genealogy] voter registration local directories
Hi Bernie, You have a lot of information that can lead you to answers for your questions. I have a couple of ideas that may be of help to you. Since some of your ancestors were naturalized, you may be able to find the original voter registration forms that they filed when they registered to vote. Here is how it worked for me in Alameda County. I checked with the voter registration office (I was trying to learn the name of the pristinct in which they lived) and while I was there I was told that the original voter forms (all nicely bound and in alphabetical (by last name) order, were at Cal State Univ. in Hayward. I found that the person for whom I was searching was naturalized in San Francisco and born in Flores, Azores. What a find. The other idea is I attended a workshop in Santa Cruz sponsored by the Santa Cruz genealogy society. The members of that organization were very helpful and may be able to lead you to available sources to help you find your ancestors that lived in Santa Cruz County. Some states and counties did census counts inbetween the 10 year federal census. There is also the possibility that your ancestor may have be recorded in a city directory. If they lived in an outlying area, they were sometimes listed in the closest city. One example of this is that I found people who lived in Decoto (not Union city) in the Hayward City directory. You can usually find copies of these old directories in the library for the city you are searching. Sometimes, a larger nearby city has copies of some of the surrounding smaller cities. One exception I found is the copies were all at the mortuary that had advertised in the directory and they had been stored in the back of a closet. I was lucky to find that the person to whom I spoke knew about them and let me search all of them. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sources, the Internet, and Family Stories
Thanks, Gayle . Btw, also have a Mathias Jose Silveira I'm researching. He married Maria Adelaide and they sailed for New Bedford in 1898. I don't knowanything yet about his birthplace. It's along-shot, I know, but thought I'd ask. Thanks for yr reply. My grandfather anglized his surname from Machado to Marshall for his first marriage. His wife was Irish and (as the story has been told) her family thought of the Portuguse as the N-- of Europe. Unfortunately, the missing word there was the horrible N- word. After she passed away and he decided to remarry (this time an Azorean woman) he reverted back to Machado. I've always wondered if there was a prevailing anti-immigrant bias due to a poor economy (much like we seem to be experiencing recently) or if it was something that was taught at home. -Original Message- From: azores@googlegroups.com on behalf of yvonne domings Sent: Sun 10/10/2010 9:35 AM To: Azores Genealogy Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sources, the Internet, and Family Stories Ally, My husband's father (whose parents immigrated from the Azores) told everyone that his family was not from the islands. My husband relates the story of when he was out at a bar with his father and he was telling another man that his family was from the mainland. The man flat out disagreed with him as if my f-i-l was lying. My husband remembers his father looking shocked to hear this, and he never heard him say that again, so I don't think he was lying. I think it was what he was told. I think that maybe his parents thought that the islands were considered somewhat backward. My friend from the Azores actually confirmed that there was a time when it was the prevailing opinion here. This is the part of the research that I find so fascinating. It provides me with a unique opportunity to get into the heads of people at a particular moment in their personal history and to think about how it relates to the situation both then and now. I can imagine how intense the pressure to fit in to the dominant culture was and even still is. As I look through the documentation, I see the transformation of my husband's family as their names become more Anglicized with each subsequent piece. First they changed their first names, then they named their children English names. Finally they dropped all indications of spelling differences from the surname. So, as you already know, your story is not so uncommon unfortunately. I say unfortunately, knowing that some people would disagree with me. I just find it intensely sad that people's native language and culture is not seen as an asset by the dominant culture. So, this is a good reminder that family stories may provide us all with starting points that need to be verified--which is also part of the fun. [AZORES-Genealogy] Machado, Bonito, Franusich
Repost for Bernie, bernieg at pacbell.net Hello Gayle, my father-in-law had cousins by the last name of Machado, they lived down the street from us, but I never got to know them. My father-in-law (Frank Joseph Franusich) never wanted to talk about any of his family. I don't know if he just didn't know or . My husband knows even less. I leave for Mexico in less than a week, when I return the first of Nov. I will pull out all of what I have and add some more info. I have tried for years to find out the exact name they had before coming to the USA. Thanks for any help you might have. Even though Louise Bonito/a Franusich was born some 25 miles away from us, we can't find much info. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Stories
When did your ancestors go to Hawaii? What are their names? I can probably help you. Just ask Celeste. Her husband and I are related. Shirley in CA - Original Message - From: netadosaco...@aol.com To: azores@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, October 11, 2010 4:41 AM Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Stories Yvonne, In one of the books, or excerpt from the book, I read that during the early 1900 in Californiathe Portuguese from both the Madeira Islands and mainland Portugal had settled in the San Leandro area (East Bay of San Francisco). These Portuguese were educated and prosperous. When the Azoreans came, many who were not educated and took labor jobs, were looked down by the mainland Portuguese and were afraid that their status would be lowered by the newcomers. This was still the tone in the late 1980's when meeting other Portuguese. There was a comment made to me to the effect that... yes you are Portuguese but you were from the Azores while they were from the Madeira Islands. It was said in a tone that was more than pride of being from the Madeira Islands but that I should know my lower status. Patsy and I have great pride, love and respect in our family heritage and the struggles that our Grt. Grandparents made in leaving their families behind and coming to Hawaii then onto California to give us a better way of life. While I was not raised with Portuguese traditions it has been fun to research the traditions and incorporate them into our holidays. Something that I can teach my son. One of the traditions that I love is to never return a dish empty. Always return it with cookies or other baked item. Celest, I would love to meet you when I return home for a visit. You remind me of my God Mother, she always was putting food on the table, even before you sat down. Ally -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com.
