[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Azores on PBS

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas da/de Costa Vasconcelos Rodrigues Gouveia Oliveira Cabral
Ric Fobelo uploaded a couple of these interviews from this documentary
to you
tube. Maybe someone can call him at 401-578-5700. and ask him for
more info.

DARTMOUTH — Creators of a documentary about Aorean and Portuguese
culture are looking for natives from those areas to tell their stories
about why they moved to the United States and their experiences here.

The documentary, called Ilha De Meus Sonhos, or Island of My
Dreams, will be produced by Ricardo Rebelo, who teaches TV and film
courses at Bristol Community College. BCC's Luso Centro, Fall River
Community Television and the FLAD Foundation are combining to create
the documentary, which Rebelo hopes to release by the end of the year.

On Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the creators will open their film
studio at BCC's Jackson Arts Center (room H-101) for immigrants to
talk about their experiences. These interviews will be the backbone
of the documentary, they said. Immigrants interested in participating
can also contact Rebelo at 401-578-5700.

All interviews, even those that don't make it into the documentary,
will be archived at the Luso Centro at BCC.

Rebelo, a former production assistant at ABC who just finished a
documentary about Lizzie Borden, wants to give future generations a
chance to hear why their parents or grandparents come to the Fall
River area. Many immigrants don't talk freely about the circumstances
of emigrating to the U.S., he said. They don't think it's
particularly remarkable, but often it is.

Rebelo, himself an Azorean immigrant, is looking to focus on how
Portuguese immigrants have maintained the culture of their homeland
here, while the Azorean culture has changed since the revolution, he
said. The documentary could also note two waves of emigration from the
Azores in the 1950s and the 70s.

The interviews are being held on Sunday because it is the anniversary
of the revolution.

I am not sure if this is what Iris was talking about. It looks like they
have a show about Portugal and the Azores next Monday on WGBH out of Boston.
It appears to be about slavery, the show is called Globe-Trekker.

At this point, I don't know what I'm looking for either.  I was told by someone
months ago that a program about the Azore's would be on pbs in March.  So I put
a note about it on my calender on the March page.  I'll check listings on
Monday.  Obrigada to all 4 of you for posting.

Hi,

Since I am new to this, what is CCA?
Also, my family is from Silveira Ribeiro do Meio, Pico,
but birth and death places are listed as Lajes do Pico.
What does Lajes mean and is it similar to our counties?

Thanks,
Linda

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] New records uploaded CCA site for island of Pico

2011-03-04 Thread Cheri Mello
Hi Linda,

CCA is Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores (Center for Knowledge of the
Azores). Their vitals are coming online. Very slowly. There is no time
line posted and no rhyme and reason for how they put things up. You can
find the records here, but don't use Firefox. It stops working right before
you go to view the records.
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/

The Azores is divided into 3 districts each with its own archive: Ponta
Delgada on Sao Miguel which houses the Sao Miguel and Santa Maria records.
Angra on Terceira which houses Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, and Pico.
Horta on Faial houses Faial, Flores, and Corvo. Archives have records that
are generally 100 years old or older.

Many of the larger islands are divided into concelhos or councils. You can
think of them like American counties. Pico has 3: Madalena, Lajes do Pico,
and Sao Roque.

You can see many of the concelhos here:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/maps.html
Just pick your island.
