Tish,
The city of Sacramento has a Center for Sacramento History located
just off Richards Blvd. The web site is:

http://www.cityofsacramento.org/ccl/history/resources/default.asp
You may be able to ask the Librarian if they have the railroad
records. TEL (916) 808-7072

Under RESOURCES there is a collection of over 400 railroad photos.
Conducting research is by appointment and the dates available are on
this web page.

   Happy hunting, DonnaO

Eric,

When you go to the train museum, if you have time, could you find
out if there are records of weekly pay statements for 1858-1900 for
the men who built the railroad. I think I am interested in the
railroad that was near Mission San Jose, Niles area.

Thanks in advance,

[AZORES-Genealogy] One Family Tree

2011-04-02 Thread netadosAcores
Group,

"One Family Tree" was on last Thursday night on the National Geography
channel here in Utah.

Their whole program was that no matter where your family has traveled
across the world, your roots will always trace back to Africa.

They were having people of various nationalities swab the inside of their
cheeks. It was like watching someone brush the inside of their cheek with
as much enthusiasm like you would be brushing your teeth.

I fell asleep but work up for the last two minutes of the recap of how we
all can trace our roots back to Africa.

Sorry I wasn't able to watch the whole program. However, much of the
programs are repeated and I will look at the telecast for future and let you
all
know when this program will be repeated. I did try to bring this up on
Google, and everything and anything related came up but not what I was hoping
for. I will continue to search.

2011-04-02 Thread Patricia Butcher

Hi Cousin Jacki,
According to my Cedros, Faial file you do have
the names correct & Antonio Francisco de
Medeiros's birthdate is also correct. I do not
have the actual record but the Faial researcher
that did the village of Cedros, Faial also had a
note posted regarding Jose Francisco "Alcaide"
who was born in Vila da Madalena, Pico. The
alcunha, "Alcaide" translates as mayor.

Here is the google translation: a bit wild but good :)
NOTE: The name or nickname "Mayor"
appears on the birth registration
(Baptism) Salvador's grandson, son of father
Incognito and his daughter Inacia
Louise. Received all the "divine
sacraments "and was buried in the" body of
church (sic) "next to the grid in front of
Bom Jesus, in the Parish Church
Santa Barbara. The priest does not say whether the deceased
or had not followed up.
He died at age 65, more or
less, he says the priest.

Antonio Francisco de Medeiros is my 2nd cousin, 4x's removed

Hope this helps a bit.

Pat

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Brickwall Broken!

2011-04-02 Thread Besotes
Eric,

How exciting for you! This may be an excellent learning experience for us
all --- with regards to the CA Death Index or any index for that matter.

A month ago I was working on my Brother-in-Law's family tree in the
Stockton, CA area. Their last name was Smith, so it was like finding a
needle in a haystack researching. For the life of me I couldn't confirm his
Father's birth information (where he was born, etc.) only where he lived
later on in life and died. When speaking, via phone, with the San Joaquin
county office they told me their records didn't show a birth on file for him
(that ended up be incorrect information). My research showed the Mother's
Maiden name as Grooms, but the only name close on the C A Death Index was
Grosens. When I tried finding a Grosens' family anywhere prior I came up
empty handed. Various people on Ancestry volunteered to help and their
research came up with nothing as well. From personal experience, One
researcher mentioned that maybe the CA Death Index had a typo or the name
completely incorrect. Sure enough, that was the case. My husband needed to
meet someone in Stockton the next week, so it was perfect timing for me. I
went to the San Joaquin County Recorder's office hoping to obtain a birth
certificate. A person with the same Father's name also appears in the
Fresno County records, but a different Mother's maiden name, so until I
could confirm the accurate Mother I didn't know which one of these men were
the correct one. To make matters more difficult, their father's names were
both the same (though not related as far as I've found). When I arrived at
the recorder's office they require you provide the Mother's maiden name -
even for a birth in 1917. I explained my situation and gave the two
Mother's names I had: one was, Grosens, which is listed on the CA Death
Index and the other was my "guess" name of Grooms. Bingo, the clerk found
it, Grooms! I remember how happy I was to have this solved after working
weeks on it, so I can imagine how elated you are!!! Once I had the Grooms
name/information everything else fell into place and I've been able to find
my Brother-in-laws family going back to his 6th great grandfather born in
1700 and he's also related to Daniel Boone by marriage via his 2nd great
Aunt marring Daniel Boone's son.

One piece of the puzzle, accurate piece of course, can make all the
difference. Congratulations to you!!!

2011-04-02 Thread Tish . Meals

Eric,

When you go to the train museum, if you have time, could you find out if
there are records of weekly pay statements for 1858-1900 for the men who
built the railroad. I think I am interested in the railroad that was near
Mission San Jose, Niles area.

Thanks in advance,
Tish

Ironically,

I have another great-great grandfather on my maternal side that worked for
Southern Pacific in Sacramento... as far as I know he was working as an
attendant at a railroad crossing in the early 1900's... apparently there
was a runaway car or something and he tried to jump onto it to stop the
car... unfortunately he ended up underneath it and lost his arm... and a
little time later, he lost his life due to complications from the
injuries... Uh oh, I changed the subject on my own thread. =)

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Brickwall Broken!

2011-04-02 Thread Jacki G.
Eric,

That's awesome. I had that same sort of thing happen with my great
grandfather. Who, was also killed in Oakland in 1909 when my grandmother was
2. Weird coincidence huh? His name was Fernandes but I found the article in
SF Chronicle and he was listed as Fernanz. He was killed in an explosion in
a quarry.

Just an FYI about the Alameda County recorders office. They will no longer
let you look at any death records and they will not make a copy for you
while you're there. They will look for the record and either send it or a
letter telling you they couldn't find it and then it also still takes weeks
to get it. Save your time gas and just file the request online. I work just
around the corner from the recorders office and I have gone round and round
with more than one person there; including the director. I even took a print
out of their website where it says that you can look at the records.

Congrats on breaking down the wall

Jacki

I thought that patrons to an FHC could request the FHC to get a higher power
