I save my gedcom to dropbox and run family tree maker from dropbox... It syncs between all of my computers and I don't have to worry about updating info when I go from computer to computer...and it is sniff site backup as well... Could not ask for anything else... OK, do I misunderstand the conversation? I've not had time to follow it properly this weekend. But I wonder what privacy of genealogical data or its public nature has to do with it. Do I correctly undersatnd that Dropbox is a place you can put your gedcom's or backed up genealogical databases to access them at a later time, and others cannot access them? If so, I'd use it! The issue of privatizing an individuals information is handled by your genealogy program, if at all,and is not the job of Dropbox. That is not what DB is.
