Diane, do you know or can you find out what island(s) your ancestors' neighbors might have been from? It was not unusual from emigrants from the same island (even same village) to cluster together upon arrival at their destination. I meant their neighbors in the US. Perhaps if you can find information about some of those neighbors' island(s) of origin more easily, you could then try checking records from there first to see if that's where your ancestors came from. Well, I heard back from my mother's cousin. The woman in this picture is not a relative. It sure is an uncanny resemblance though; and the name Costa too. She said her husband's family arrived in Fall River from Sao Miguel then moved to Southern Cal and then to Berkeley. His father and the children were the only ones that used the name Costa.
