Diane, do you know or can you find out what island(s) your ancestors'
neighbors might have been from? It was not unusual from emigrants
from the same island (even same village) to cluster together upon

I meant their neighbors in the US.

Perhaps if you can find information about some of those neighbors'
island(s) of origin more easily, you could then try checking records
from there first to see if that's where your ancestors came from.

Well, I heard back from my mother's cousin. The woman in this picture is not
a relative. It sure is an uncanny resemblance though; and the name Costa
too. She said her husband's family arrived in Fall River from Sao Miguel
then moved to Southern Cal and then to Berkeley. His father and the children
were the only ones that used the name Costa.

My interest in this is that I'm trying to identify several photographs sent
by a relative in Massachucetts of portraits taken in Benicia and Vallejo
from the 1890s to 1910s. They were

not labeled and the curennt family has no idea who they were. By looking at
censuses, I've felt it could be a Costa family... or a Silva,,, or a Souza..
etc

Do you have any photos of this family to compare ? there are eleven photos.
Here are two. They were sent to Antone Jacinto Vieira in Taunton , MA. He
was from Cedros, Flores
