[AZORES-Genealogy] report from Pico
Hello all, I have not posted in a long time. I am still in Portugal, in a small village in the mountains near Viseu where I will be for three more weeks. But I did manage to get to the Azores for four days on my way here - two days on Faial and two days on Pico. My hope was to find a birth record for my great-great grandfather Caton Frates (Caetano Freitas?), which might in turn lead me to records for his parents and their families. I was not successful, but I still had a wonderful time. Here are some things that I found out which may be helpful to people on this list. Please bear with me if it's old news to some of you. The first thing I did when I arrived in Horta (on Faial) was go to the Public Library and Archive, where the records from before (I think) 1910 are kept. I found someone there who spoke a little English, and she tried to help me. But it was a bust. First, they would not let me look at any of the actual books. They put me on a computer and let me look at the scans posted here http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/, which I am sure many of you have already visited. Unfortunately, not all of the record books have been scanned yet, many of the existing scans are not very legible, and you can only search by island and parish (freguesia). So you either have to know the island and freguesia, or guess. Once you choose a freguesia and a period of time to search within, you get a huge block of links with no indication at all of what each link will lead to, so you have to fish at random for the proper year. (When I do this on my own computer those links all come up dead when I click on them - if anyone knows how to make them work I'd be much obliged - could it be because I'm using a Mac?) After much fishing I never did find the year I was looking for, and I was quite discouraged. The next day I went to Pico, and met a great taxi driver at the ferry terminal in Madelena. Her name is Maria Ribeira, and she lived for a long time in Canada and so speaks very good English. She is also very knowledgeable about local history, and I hired her to take me on a tour of the island (80 euros for a four-hour tour, or 100 for a seven-hour tour). She was a terrific guide and conversationalist, and I can highly recommend her if you want a guided tour of Pico (contact me if you want her email address). I told her why I was there and she was very interested, and said that a lot of Freitas people come from São Roque. She thought that if I were able to hang out in São Roque for a while and talk to people, eventually I would find someone who would remember something about my great-great grandfather, as many people still remember who left on the whaling ships (It's a small place!). Sadly, I did not have the time to do this. Her husband José is also a taxi driver but is also very interested in Pico history and genealogy, and works sometimes as a researcher for a law firm there, helping them track down distant family when Portuguese-Americans die and have no living heirs in the US. So he is available to hire if you are interested in that. She also mentioned that the whaling museum in Lajes do Pico had some books with names of some of the whalers who went to California. I was staying at a beautiful place on the outskirts of Lajes ( http://aldeiadafonte.com/en/), so first thing next morning I walked into town and went to the whaling museum. I met a very nice woman named Ana Fagundes, who speaks excellent English. She mentioned that many Freitas people also came from Calheta, and assured me that his name was indeed probably Caetano, and that while this is usually a surname it could also be a given name. She showed me the books Maria had mentioned. I was expecting them to be actual historical record books, but it turned out they were published books about whaling that the museum sells. One was in Portuguese (don't recall the title), and one was this one in English, which I suspect many of you know: http://www.portuguesebooks.org/Whalers/shorewhaling.html(if you have not seen this I would recommend it, especially for folks researching families in California). It does have many lists of the Portuguese/Azorean whalers working in California in the 19th century, though it did not list my great-great grandfather. Ana also directed me to this web site, which you may know: http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/ She then suggested I visit the Notario/Civil Registry office around the corner. They only have records for Lages, but since I did not know where my ancestor came from exactly it would be worth a try. But they were closed that day for the Festa de São Pedro. I stayed in town for the festa, and later that afternoon Ana found me on the street. After I had left the museum she thought about my quest and did some more online research. The info she gave me seems unlikely as the names and dates are a bit of a stretch. But I could not believe how kind and thoughtful she was to do the research, write down her findings, and actually come

I have a Manuel V. Miranda 1847 – 1923 who was my great grandmother’s second husband. I know he was born in the Azores. I’m pretty sure it was Sao Miguel but I don’t have any documents to prove the island. He had two sons that I know of. Antone Miranda 1879 – 1942 born in the Azores and Frank P. Miranda 1891 – 1931 born in the US who married my grandmother’s sister. (Yep, he married his step-niece who was 20 years younger. Yuk!) Yes, I used Pimsleur to improve my Spanish skills and thought it was terrific. I was able to check out the CD's at my local library. I've tried several different programs and thought it was the best. I used Pimselur CD's for Brazilian Portuguese and liked the approach. I know others who swear by this method as well. I could listen to one or two lessons per day on my commute to work, which encouraged me to stick with it through the entire set of CDs.
