  Help request:

If you have the book "Portuguese Immigrants from Azores to Sandwich Isles,
1879-1883: Passport Index":

According to Melody Lassalle, on page 27, there is a couple: Manoel d’Arruda
and Maria Júlia (de Mello?)

  - does it mention the year of arrival in Hawaii?

  - Does it mention the ship they arrived in?

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: What time of the year is best to go to the Azores

2011-11-09 Thread Besotes
Hello Vivian,

If I'm not mistaken, I believe you're in California too. Can't remember if
you're Northern or Southern, California. Here's information for the
Northern California departure (could be for all of California for that
matter.) J

When we visited the Azores back in 2008, we were not able to purchase our
tickets until December and I phone almost daily until they were available
(there was no set day on when they would sell them!). I'm almost positive
the travel office was Sata airlines who have an office in San Jose, CA and
also Portugal. At the time, it was easier to reach someone at the 800 # or
the Portugal # then the San Jose office (they didn't seem to be in too big
of a hurry to call back timely).

Being your first time traveling to the Azores, if you're able too, I would
schedule your travel during a festival such as the Sanjoaninas Festival
 . I'm not seeing the 2012 Sanjoaninas
Festival dates yet, though maybe someone on the list may know otherwise.

Here's information I found for you along with the URL at the bottom where I
found it. We were the first flight of the year out of Oakland about the 2nd
week of June. We had a layover as mentioned below in Ontario (and you were
not allowed to get off the plane).

Oakland, CA - Terceira w/ Connections to other islands

Please Note: Oakland flights operate from June 8 through October 5 ONLY.
Flights stop in Hamilton, Ontario for about 1 hour for crew change and
refueling. No boarding or deplaning in Hamilton permitted. Total flying time
is 10 hours not including the ground time in Hamilton.

For more information please call us at 800-652-9151 or contact us.

Minor children (17yrs and under) traveling with only 1 parent or with

consent cannot be produced at time of check-in.

If you Skype, we can chat and I would be happy to give recommendations and
such for your trip - for example, luggage weight from the US to the Azores
is one weight, but travel between islands is another (unless you want to pay
$ extra - something we didn't know ahead of time). We visited for two
weeks and stayed at three different types of lodging (which I liked!).

All my best to you,

Hello All,

I know I have seen before on the list that people have traveled to the

have a change to go to Lisbon first and then on to Pico and maybe go for a

I am thinking of going for a week in May 2012. Is that a bad time of the

going to be hard to go to Lisbon, and then on to the Azore Islands?

Any help will be appreciated.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] mtDNA question

2011-11-09 Thread Sandra Oliveira Cardoso
Hi,

It's me, Ubirajara Jales de Lira, Sandra's husband.
According to FTDNA they are 5th cousins. Can you tell me who is our common
ancestor?
I put my Family Tree on Ancestry.com. You can see it there!
I think that they left Azores in the 16th century or 17th century or 18th
century. I am not sure, but I believe that my ancestors are in Brazil at
least 300 years. Many people came from Portugal( also Azores) to Northeast
of Brazil( region of my mother's ancestors) in the 16th century, 17th
century and 18th century.
Family Cardoso of Sandra is from Spain/Paraguay.
Here's the link with my Family Tree:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/2208033/family .
If you'll have any difficulty and/or question, you can do it.

Thanks,

Ubirajara Jales de Lira and Sandra Oliveira Cardoso.

check the schedules of when they occur and the towns...If you are you to

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: What time of the year is best to go to the Azores

2011-11-09 Thread nancy jean baptiste

I looked online today for tickets in Feb and they appeared to be selling them!
About 900 for round trip Feb and return in April. Cheaper than prime summer
rates. There are festa's all summer long beginning in May with Santo Cristo
Festa. The summer months it seems like every village has something going on and
each weekend you can go eat, drink and hear musicsometimes even
chamarita.lots of parades and folkloric dancing and costuming. We've been
June, July, August and Sept.each month has it's own appeal. I love August
because the fruits are ripening and the trees are heavy with figs. This year we
were there for the grape harvest and wine making and that was high on my list
of things not to miss in the future! My experience is pretty limited to Pico
although we enjoy Semana do Mar in Fayal as well as San Joaoquinas which is
HUGE! Swimming is nice in the summer months but I'm told that even in early
fall the water is warm. In my opinion each month would hold it's own
charm.I long to be on Pico right now to see the huge waves they're
havingI can only imagine the sight and sound!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: What time of the year is best to go to the Azores

2011-11-09 Thread Nancy Couto
Dear Vivian,

I visited Sao Miguel for a week last June, and it was great. We had wanted
to go in May, but all the flights were full because of the Senhor Santo
Cristo festival.

As for timing, it depends on the purpose of your trip. If you want to do
any serious research while you're there, you should check to make sure the
archives will be open. I went to the Arquivo in Ponta Delgada on our first
full day there, and I stayed all day. It's a good thing I did, because
there were a couple of holidays while we were there--Day of Portugal and
Day of the Azores. So I went to the Arquivo on Thursday, Friday was a
holiday, Saturday and Sunday were weekend days (Arquivo closed), and Monday
was another holiday. Since I had planned on one day of research and the
rest of the time for touring the island, everything worked out OK. But if
I had saved the Arquivo for Friday or Monday, I would have been terribly
disappointed.

As for the weather, it was comfortably cool--sunny in Ponta Delgada but
foggy or rainy up in the mountains. We were told that the really warm,
sunny days wouldn't come until July and August. That's Sao Miguel,
though. The weather on Pico and Sao Jorge may be different.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your trip. The Azores are beautiful!

Nancy

Hello group

I came across something in one of my lines.

I have Justa Coelho, b. Feb.8.1582 in Se, Angra do Heroismo, Terceira and
married to Pedro Goncalves Linhares baptizing a child in Porto Judeu Dec. 8
1644. 62 years after!!! I believe some genealogical references are incorrect
as for the parents of Justa Coelho married to Pedro, as a daughter of Joao
Garcia Romayo and Barbara Coelho, more likely a grandaughter and possible
daughter of a Justa Coelho, born in 1582.

Mabe the Genealogias da Ilha Terceira by Jorge Forjaz might have something
about it.

Any help would be apreciated
