I don't know. I am sorry about that. I added the first Manuel to
create the chart. He does not exist. I only have the 1805 marriage and
thought it might be a link to yours.

Perhaps the family didn't use the Pacheco surname until sometime later
in life; I have a marriage listed for a Manuel Bento and Maria do
Couto on 24-Feb-1879 at Nossa Senhora do Rosario, Lomba da Maia. Also,
in the same parish, is an earlier marriage for a Manuel Bento and
Maria do Couto on 23-Jan-1837.

2012-02-27 Thread Gail Elizares
Hi Keith,

I’m having the same problem with my great grandfather that came to Hawaii in
1883 also. I was told his name was Caitano but his actual name is Guitao de
Souza. Either name I didn’t have luck finding him in one of the passenger
ships to Hawaii, (Big Island). But thanks to this forum I got an email from
a family member (which I didn’t know) from California which gave me a lot
more info and I found out where he was in the 1930 census. I’m trying to
get in touch with some other family members to find out where he is buried.
Hopefully we can eventually find them on the passenger lists, if not maybe
they were stowaways.

Hi Eliseu,

In answer to your question about my ggrandfather Jose da Costa here is what
I know. He emigrated from Sao Miguel about 1883 to Hawai’i. He married
Inocencia (Maria Jacintha) Pereira in 1884. He resided in North Kohala with
his family working as an asst. engineer on a sugar plantation. He had the
following children: Joe, Frank, Charles, Amelia, Maria, Isabella, Jacintha.
He changed his name to Costa Pimental sometime around 1910-1920. His wife
died in 1909-1910 and was buried in Hawi, N. Kohala. His first daughter,
Maria, married Manuel Moniz in 1909 and was living with him in 1910.
Unfortunately, I can’t figure out which ship he came on or track down his
passport registration from the Azores. That is about it on him for now.

Regards,

Keith Pimental

[AZORES-Genealogy] Birth Record

2012-02-27 Thread Fawnie
Good Morning,

Where do I write to get a birth record for a relative born in Horta,
Faial, Azores?
How much does a copy of the birth record cost?
What format do I address the envelope?
How long does it usually take to get the record?

Thank you so much.

Fawn,

You can look up the record on the NEPS website for Horta, Faial. And, that's
free.

2012-02-27 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
It depends when the birth took place. If it was prior to 1910 then it would
be in the archives if it was after 1910 it would be in the registry. If the
parish is in the CCA website http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/ . If
you send for the birth record you will need to know village (Parish) and
date of birth it also helps if you know the parents names.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Hayward (CA) City Directories

2012-02-27 Thread Carol Warnock
I am currently trying to find any library or FHC that might have Polk City
Directories for Hayward (Alameda County) CA for the time period of
1925-1927. The Family History Library in
Salt Lake City has Polk Directories for 1930-32 & 1934 (which does not
help), the Boston Public Library supposedly has it on microfiche as does
the Indianapolis Public Library.
I have tried the Hayward Public Library and the Hayward FHC (both online).
I have also tried the Southern CA Genealogical Society's Library online
catalog, the San Diego Genealogical Society's Library online catalog, the
Los Angelles Public Library's online catalog and last but not least I tried
the Sutro Library in South San Francisco. Does anyone have any suggestions
as to where else I can search.

All I know is that the family moved from Gloucester MA to Hayward in either
1925 or 1926, lived there until summer of 1927 and that they lived "on
Orchard Street near the elementary school." Unfortunately, my mother and
all of her siblings are deceased. Does anyone have any suggestions of
places that might these records within California or does anyone have
access to the Boston Public Library?

Thank you to all for all your help.

their is a charge) to the Library for their help when you do email them.

The Oakland Library history room here has Hayward San Leandro for 1929-1930
. There are some at the Hayward, but 1931-1932 is the earliest. Nothing

Carol,

I am going to work tomorrow at our FHC. I will check to see if we have
anything for Hayward. I know that I have some for Oakland but not sure
about Hayward. I'll let you know what I find.

Carol,

The elementry school is at the corner of Orchard and Soto Road. This is the
Mt Eden area.

Who are you looking for? I'm going to Oakland in the next few days for some
library time.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Where to find records for Horta, Fayal

2012-02-27 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi Fawn

I just checked with the CCA website and either the site is still under
repair or there are no records on line at that site for Horta. Someone else
on this list mentioned a site for Horta, Fayal but I am not familiar with it
as I do most all of my work in Sao Miguel.

Can someone direct Fawn to the correct website she is looking for a birth
record in Horta for April 1889.

Hi Richard,

The birth was April 1889. I know the parents names.

Are the archives on line? If not, do you know the address of the archives?

Would the town hall in Horta also have the birth record?

I don't know the parish in Horta. How would I find this information?

Thank you so much for your help.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hayward (CA) City Directories

2012-02-27 Thread celeste perry
Hi Carol,
I know that the Hayward Historical Society has many Hayward City
Directories.  They are in the process of moving so I don't know if contacting
them would have someone on staff to look at the directories for you.  I can't
remember what years they have.
I also know that when I was researching for a friend, I went to the then
Sorenson Brothers Mortuary and they had even more Hayward City Directories than
the Historical Society.  Sorenson advertised in the Directories so they
probably received a free copy each year.
Sorenson's was taken over by the Diocese of Oakland and is now called
something else; Sorenson Holy Angels or Holy Angels Sorenson, can't remember
which it is.  In the 2011 Hayward phone  book, it is still llisted as Sorenson
Bros. Mortuary.

I am currently trying to find any library or FHC that might have Polk City
Directories for Hayward (Alameda County) CA for the time period of 1925-1927.
The Family History Library in
Salt Lake City has Polk Directories for 1930-32 & 1934 (which does not help),
the Boston Public Library supposedly has it on microfiche as does the
Indianapolis Public Library.
I have tried the Hayward Public Library and the Hayward FHC (both online).  I
have also tried the Southern CA Genealogical Society's Library online catalog,
the San Diego Genealogical Society's Library online catalog, the Los Angelles
Public Library's online catalog and last but not least I tried the Sutro
Library in South San Francisco.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to where
else I can search.

All I know is that the family moved from Gloucester MA to Hayward in either
1925 or 1926, lived there until summer of 1927 and that they lived "on Orchard
Street near the elementary school." Unfortunately, my mother and all of her
siblings are deceased.  Does anyone have any suggestions of places that might
these records within California or does anyone have access to the Boston Public
Library?

Thank you to all for all your help.

Fawn,
For whom are you looking?  My biological father was born in Horta, Faial.
There are 2 church in Horta so you may have to look in both.  I thought when I
was looking for ancestor there, Horta was on the site.
The last email I received said the NEPS website was:

I have not tried this address so can't say it works.

I did look at the San Francisco newspapers when I was in Sacramento many years

I just wrote a letter to our bishop about starting an archives. Since
the
State of Hawaii have records only from certain dates we have to rely on
the

are
not to cooperative and they want to charge by the hour to find a

I am currently trying to find any library or FHC that might have Polk City
Directories for Hayward (Alameda County) CA for the time period of
1925-1927. The Family History Library in
Salt Lake City has Polk Directories for 1930-32 & 1934 (which does not
help), the Boston Public Library supposedly has it on microfiche as does the
Indianapolis Public Library.
I have tried the Hayward Public Library and the Hayward FHC (both online).

All I know is that the family moved from Gloucester MA to Hayward in
either 1925 or 1926, lived there until summer of 1927 and that they lived "on
Orchard Street near the elementary school." Unfortunately, my mother and all
of her siblings are deceased. Does anyone have any suggestions of places
that might these records within California or does anyone have access to the
Boston Public Library?

Thank you to all for all your help.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Hayward (CA) City Directories

2012-02-27 Thread celeste perry
Ava,
On my visit to the old Sorsenson Mortuary, I was looking for the information
that was written in their book at the time of the services.  I found there was
information about the person who died, and some relatives.  There was
information about who had sent flowers and the relationship of the sender to
the deceased.  While I was making notes of this information, the person who was
helping me asked if a "city directory" would be of help.
I had used City Directories at the Historical Society Library and knew they
did not have a whole lot of them there.  When my helper "angel" took me
upstairs to a room with 2 shelves on a bookcase full of the directories.
The directories I saw were like yearly census of a person who lived at a
listed address.  The usual form was, husband (owner or renter) and his wife, if
married.  Occupations were also listed.  Sometimes children were listed and
also boarders.
California did not have a state census so the directories were like some
states census that are done inbetween the Federal census.
While looking for information about one of my sons-in-law, I could not find
them listed in the City Directory.  I knew they lived in San Leandro, CA during
the years of the directories I found.  It took a lot of questioning of those
who were at the library and also the genealogical society to find out that some
of the directories only listed those living within the city limits.  The person
I searched lived outside of the city limits.  Thus, he was not listed in the
directory.
In the case of the Hayward City Directories, I did not find that.  I even
found that some of the outlying areas; Decoto, Alvarado, etc. were small
unincorporated areas and were listed in the Hayward directories.  Not in all of
them; however, I saw them listed in several.
   Hope this helps.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Salt Lake Plaza Hotel: Conference April 10-13

2012-02-27 Thread Cheri Mello
For those going to the genealogy conference in Salt Lake on April 10-13:
Please call the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel at (800) 366-3684 and tell them you
are with the Azores Genealogy Group to book your room. Please do this
soon.

The Plaza is in the business to sell as many rooms as possible. Right now,
they can add more rooms to our room count if needed. After March 10th, any
rooms not booked by us will be available for the general public to book.

Remember, if you are coming to the conference and have some other
non-Portuguese researchers coming along as friends, they can book a room at
our rate by mentioning the Azores Conference. They just aren't attending
our lectures. I don't pay for the lecture room if 20 rooms are booked by
the Azores Conference.

Example: John and Mary Smith are coming to the Azores Conference to
research their Portuguese lines. They told Bob and Betty Boop, who have
really been wanting to go to Salt Lake, but they will be researching the
Boops in Cartoononia. The Smiths book one of the Azores hotel rooms and so
do the Boops. Two more rooms sold. But the Boops don't come to the
conference because Rosemarie, João, nor I research the imaginary land of
Cartoononia.

Thanks!
