Mello Mayer, Henrietta. South of the Cannons: Portuguese Families of
Stonington, Connecticut. Stonington: Stonington Historical Society.
  2012.

This book is a compilation of information on the Portuguese community
of Stonington, Connecticut, USA. The book combines genealogy,
  chronicle, and public records.

South of the Cannons: Portuguese Families of Stonington, Connecticut
compiled by Henrietta Mello Mayer South of the Cannons is a rich
chronicle of Stonington in a time that vanished only yesterday. “South
of the Cannons,” the area from Cannon Square to the Point in
Stonington Borough, was for decades the focus of the town’s vital
  Portuguese life.

Henrietta Mello Mayer's work captures the flow of that busy time while
it still lives in memory. The book is a greatly expanded edition of
her 1977 work, Silva Descendants: Portuguese Genealogy. It contains
fresh genealogical material, a chronology of Portuguese life in
Stonington, previously unpublished family and census records, research
on the compiler’s Azorean ancestors, and many previously unpublished
  photographs.

Henrietta Mello Mayer South is a genealogist.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Berbereia de Ormonde, Lowell, Massachusetts, early 1900s

2012-04-29 Thread Cheri Mello
Repost for Doreen Caetano Jungk, rondo at lightspeed dot net:

I'm also looking for information for my family in Lowell, MAss around
the same time. Is there anyone in our group that is from that area. Are
there old records for the P.E.B.S. 6 ? I've attached a copy of an email
I sent to the funeral home asking for more information on my Grand
Uncle Frank Coelho Berbereia de Ormonde. He died in a neighboring town
in the State Hospital. He, along with many other men, were injured in a
construction accident on 12/9/1913. They were constructing a Brewery
but I do not have the location of the brewery. Are there old newspapers
for this area available on-line? Please note that the Berbereia name is
often mispelled (Burberia, Berberea, Berberia, Brady ). Since sending
this email, I have located his death record online. I have also located
his birth record. I have a family picture that shows Frank getting
married in Lowell but his death record indicates that he was single.
Since this email I have discovered that my Great Uncle (Frank's and my
Granfather AntonioCoelho Berbereia de Ormonde's Uncle used the name
Jose Ferreira Drummond. His father and my Great Grandfather was Jose
Ferreira Ormonde who was married to Catarina Rosa. I have no idea where
they are buried. I know that they were all born in the village of
Altares, Terceria. Is anyone searching this family?I’m doing family
research and recently discovered the location of my
granduncle’s grave. Some of the family knew that he had died of a
construction accident o the East Coast but thought it was in New York.
After two years of searching and following up family passage records, I
recently discovered the families connection with Lowell, MA. I started
calling cemeteries in the area and located the grave but no death
record with the city clerk. After contacting the historical board I was
sent the following information:
Monday Dec. 22, 1913 Lowell Sun BARBERIA- the funeral of Frank Barberia
took place yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the home of his
brother, Manuel, 25 Marshall Street, and was largely attended. Services
were held at St. Anthony’s church at 3:30 o’clock Rev. Manuel R.
Rodrigues officiating. Among the flowers was a cross inscribed “Frank”
from the family, and a pillow inscribed “P.E.B.S., 6” from the
Portuguese Benefit society. The bearers were Francisco L. Corria,
Anthnio J. d’Avilla, Jose G. Rocha, G. Pinheis, Jose Largendes, and
Manuel C. Pacheio. Burial was in St. Patrick’s cemetery; Undertakers
M.H. McDonough Sons in charge.. I‘m wondering if you have more
information. I want to get a copy of his death certificate. Do you have
his birth date and location? Any and all information will help in my
search for other family members graves. On another note there is a baby
buried next to my uncle named Maria Berberia. From my search I know
that she was buried on 7/1/1912 and died 6/30/1912. She was 2 months
old. Did you also handle this funeral? Do you have any information? The
family knew that there was a baby buried back east but does not
remember who’s baby she is or what she died of. The church does not
have any burial records from back then. This is a long shot but can
pass up the opportunity to ask just in case- I’m also looking for my
Great grandparents graves Joe Ferreira Ormonde and his wife Catarina
Rosa from Terceira. Their daughter is the mother of Frank. Families
full names was Coelho Berbereia de Ormonde Ferreira de Ormonde, all
of them are from Altares and Raminho, Terceira but some were educated
on the east coast. If you need talk to me you can call me on my cell
phone (559) 250-5984 but please wait until Monday since I’m presently
in Canada and am traveling without my phone at this time. Thanks for
your time and assistance, Sincerely, Doreen Caetano Jungk

[AZORES-Genealogy] Silva from Pico

2012-04-29 Thread Carol Lobo
Trying to find where my GG grandfather was from on Pico Island -born Oct 30,
1830 name Guilherme Mederiros Silva.

Came to New Bedford, Maine on a ship in 1850 - sometime between his arrival and
1953, he returned to Pico and
took a bride to bring back to the U.S. She gave her name as Grace A Wood -
however she was the daughter
of Christiana de Luna and Carlos Matson and was named Marie.

Hope I haven't confused the search. Thanks for any help you can give me.
