RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Passport/passenger list question

2012-06-26 Thread Gail Elizares
Hi Shirley,

I’m not sure if a child came with them. I don’t know if it is accurate but
I show a child name Maria born in 1882 and approximate date of marriage
1883. They show a second child name Maria da Estrella Souza born in 1883 in
Hawaii. Second Maria married Joseph Dias and lived in Alameda County. I
tried ordering death certificates covering 1931 through 1935 but they
couldn’t find any. They are double checking with the state to make sure
they didn’t die during that period. If it comes back a no record found I
will try to order another death certificate covering the next five years.
I’m doing this because I can’t find them in the 1940 census so I think they
died during that period. It seems like at one point there were two Maria’s
in Hawaii but I’m not sure.

I’m having a hard time finding my grandfather and grandmother on a passport
or ship list. They came from Sao Miguel and their names are Quitao de Souza
aka Caitano Souza, and his wife was Maria Ferreira Souza. I do know they
came to Hawaii in 1883. I’m still trying to find if their names are on the

Please reply directly to me, thank you.

I am currently doing some research on illegal emigration from Portugal to
the United States during the time period (roughly) between 1890-1910. If
you had a relative who emigrated during this time period and you have either
their passport but not their name on a passenger list OR you have found
their name on a passenger list but have not found their passport, can you
please email me directly? I am only trying to compile some rough numbers
regarding how many people may have travailed illegally from Portugal to the
United States.

My research has shown, so far, that many individuals were not aware that
they were even traveling illegally or that they were aiding illegal travel!

Thanks in advance,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Maria Eugenia daughter of Antonio Goncalves do Couto of Ribeirinha Terceira

2012-06-26 Thread rondo ranch
I can not find my Greatx2 Grandmother's death record. I was wondering if
anyone in the group has her in their tree and if you do, do you have the
information? I know that she died after 1911 but do not know when or where.
She was the daughter of Antonio Goncalves do Couto and Maria Eugenia Cardoso
Toste of Ribeirinha, Terceira born on 4/22/1841. She married Francisco Caetano
do Canto on 11/25/1833 in Ribeirinha. He died in a house on Rua da Igreja in
Ribeirinha on 1/8/1911. I believe this house is the same house that an
unmarried aunt, her daughter Eugenia Candida, lived in until 7/10/1953 when she
died. She left the house to a niece. She may have came to the USA to join her
other children. Some of the family thinks that her husband also came here for
a while but went back to the Azores. Thanks for your help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Furtado Lineage

2012-06-26 Thread Rich K
New to the list, and was wondering if anyone could provide some help.

Sadly, I have no real knowlege of my family tree, and now in my mid-30s it
would be nice to know where I came from. My father and mother know little
about their heritage, and it was by happenstance alone I found a small
glint of information. A while ago I stumbled across an article
(http://library.csustan.edu/bsantos/sketch1.html), while searching for my
late grandfather's phone number (now my parent's).  The article states;

"Rufus' mother, Rose Furtado, was born on January 25, 1881 in Sunol,
California. Her parents were Jose Silveira Furtado and Maria Furtado who
were both from Faial, Azores Islands. She attended local schools and could
read and speak both Portuguese and English. Confusion enters at this point
as to the surnames used by Rose's six brothers and two sisters. Some took
the last name Kelby and some used Santos. The family tells the story of the
great grandfather being a cook on a sailing vessel and who had red hair. It
is assumed that he was a Kelby (Irish) or took on the name Kelby;
therefore, those in Rose's family who "felt Irish" used the Irish Kelby

Rose's brothers and sisters were: Rosalinda Santos who married William
Quaresma and were owners of a Portuguese language Sacramento newspaper with
the name "Imparcial;" Mary who married Joe Avilar; Manuel; Samuel Solsteen
Kelby whose wife was Audrey and lived in Dunsmuir, California; John Kelby
whose wife was Emily; Frank Santos; Henry Kelby who married four times; and
Joe Santos."

As it turns out, I am a Kelby. I discussed this with my father, and found
that he knew little beyond the fact that Samuel Solsteen and Audrey were
his fraternal grand-parents.

I was wondering if someone could provide me with any information about Jose
Silveira Furtado and Maria Furtado from Faial; birth dates, immigration
dates, port of entry, anything.

Thank you!

Richard Kelby II

2012-06-26 Thread Pam Santos
Did you try to order deaths in Hawaii? If so I would ask them to look for
name variations. Because back in 1996 I requested a death for Manuel dos
Santos, They said they couldn't find one. Last year I sent another request
but this time I asked them to look for Manuel Dos Santos Bento and they
found it. It took them a year to send it to me after back and forth sending
them information how I was related for them to verify I was related.

GOOD LUCK getting info from the people at the church in Mission San Jose. My

Do you have any idea where these people died? Do you know how old they were?
About when they were born?
I have been looking at all of the sources that I have, and cqn not find them on

Do you know the names, ages, place of birth of all of their children?
Have you ever found them on the Hawaii census?

  Hi Shirley,

I’m not sure if a child came with them. I don’t know if it is accurate but
I show a child name Maria born in 1882 and approximate date of marriage 1883.
They show a second child name Maria da Estrella Souza born in 1883 in Hawaii.
Second Maria married Joseph Dias and lived in Alameda County. I tried ordering
death certificates covering 1931 through 1935 but they couldn’t find any. They
are double checking with the state to make sure they didn’t die during that
period. If it comes back a no record found I will try to order another death
certificate covering the next five years. I’m doing this because I can’t find
them in the 1940 census so I think they died during that period. It seems like
at one point there were two Maria’s in Hawaii but I’m not sure.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] question about the Neps website

2012-06-26 Thread celeste perry
Mike,
I was at the archive in Horta, Faial, and saw 2 (obvious students) going
through one of the books.  One was reading out loud the contents of the book
and the other was writing in a folder.  They looked, to me, as though they were
recording of the record to the book.  That reminded me about what I had heard
that the NEPS site was collected by students of one of the professors of the
university.  All went well until they began to laugh, talk between themselves
about things not in the book, etc.  I think the NEPS site is (as stated by
others) a starting point to get to the actual document you need to read or have
transcribed and translated by someone like Joao Ventura, before you take
anything as the actual writings.
Even looking at the actual books there have been times when it is found
that the priest made mistakes.  I like to think maybe he said too many masses
and had a little bit more wine than necessary!
One clue I found early on was that someone in the NEPS site had a son that
was born before the father.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] question about the Neps website

2012-06-26 Thread Cheri Mello
Mike and others,

>From what we can glean out of the written Portuguese, the NEPS site is a
sociology study. They do not have entire families. They skipped the
babies who had no parents (huh, they aren't part of society?) and I don't
remember what else.

Like everyone said, use it as a sort of index and verify with the actual
records (order them through your FHC = Family History Center, hire a
researcher, or wait for them to come online).

Listowner, Azores-Gen
Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Furtado Lineage

2012-06-26 Thread Katharine
Have you checked UMass-Dartmouth's database of Portuguese-American
newspapers to see if you can find copies of the Imparcial online? It might
contain info re your ancestors. (Sorry I don't have the link offhand,
although Sonia Pacheco has posted here re it several times, so try
searching on her name).

Also try contacting Sacramento's Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society:
www.sacramentophcs.com

Good luck! Katharine.
