Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with confirming Nordeste natural - Guimar da Costa last name

2012-06-30 Thread Margaret Vicente
Hi Eliseu,

I think you might be right and it could be Gudinho but I will have to wait
and see if it will show up in other records. The other surname is COSTA
and if you take a look at her obit I attached in my previous email you will
be able to see it better and same for "Furtado Barroso" which lists him as
her husband.

Thank you,
Margaret.

2012-06-30 Thread Gayle Machado
Carol,

Your note caught my attention when you mentioned Edgartown. My parents were
born and raised on Martha's Vineyard. So, I went to my books on the Portuguese
on MV, but found nothing under Wood or Woods that seemed to apply. But, here's
my thought: there used to be a historical society that kept info on all the
Portuguese families from the island. If they're still in operation, you might
want to contact them. Just a thought.

Also, if you find your ancestor(s) from Pico, please let us know. My paternal
grandmother came from Candelaria. Her lines extend into Sao Mateus and Sao
Joao.

Good luck with your research.

MORGADINHO looks like GUDINHO… You do not have enough space to write Costa
and then morgadinho... The name GODINHO (modern spelling) exists in
Nordeste. Also it doesn’t look like COSTA… It looks like an abbreviation…

Are you sure that the name of Manuel is FURTADO BARROSO? The first letter of
the name that you say as BARROSO looks like an R not a B…

Guiomar looks like GUIOMAR DA CONCEIÇÃO GUDINHO …

Hello one and all,

For a while now I have been tracing my Paternal/Maternal "Melo" line. My
Dad always said his ggrandmother was from Agua Retorta and he was right I
found them there but the record showed they were naturals of Nordeste which
led me to Francisco de Melo, who now ends up being natural of Ribeira
Grande and so the quest continues. His full name may be Francisco de Melo
Ferras as indicated in one of his children's marriage records.

Francisco married 2nd marriage with Antonia do Canto in Nordeste on
05-Jan-1703. Antonia is the daughter of Manuel Furtado Barroso and Guimar
da Costa Morgadinho??

Is anyone connected to this line that could confirm Guimar's last name is in
fact Morgadinho please, because the record breaks in the middle of it and
I'm not certain if it is Morgadinho or if something else.

Attached is a copy of Francisco de Melo marriage record to Antonia do Canto
my 7ggparents for quick viewing.

Thank you.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Willialm Wood

2012-06-30 Thread Carol Lobo
Found all my info was wrong- just found copy of Marriage license from Boston
dated nov 11, 1855.
Male was William J. Wood age 25 father name JANETS mother name GACIA

Femal Christiana Omillin (think is was Amelia) age 18 father name John P.
Ignacio.

Milliam J. Wood became a citizen in County of Bristol in Ma. on March 1853
stating that he was born in Fayall in the Azores on Oct. 5, 1830.
Also states he arrived in Fairhaven in the county of Bristol on or about Jan
10, 1844.

Manuel Francis attest to knowing William as he arrived in ship Northern in the
year 1844, he was 15 years when he first arrived.

This is totally different than the infor that I got from the book by Roddy,
Mills, Mansions, and Mergers. Christiana's family is totally
wrong.

My grandfather John Madison Wood was born in Edgertown on June 22, 1859, (the
3rd child), His father listed as
Wm Wood a Laborer from Pico, W.I. - his mother was listed as Grace A. Wood
Pace of birth Pico W.I.

Also wrong info from Wikipedia about William Madison Wood, stating the father
was William Sr. AKA Guilhermie Medeiros Silva
and was a crew man on a whaling ship from 1853 until his death in 1871 -
Census states different.

I have e-mail Joao for help, have not heard from him yet - anybody who might be
researching these NEW names, please
let me know.

Thanks, Carol Lobo

Vitalsearch has a page for Alameda County,. In it are images of handwritten
birth death

and marriage records from the late 1880s to about 1905.

They can also be found by going to Membership Advantages link on the Home
Page.

I'm not at home so can't access my membership.

I think I'd look for the bride's siblings getting married. Or the bride's
baptism.

Shame on that worm!

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with confirming Nordeste natural - Guimar da Costa last name

2012-06-30 Thread nancy jean baptiste

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with confirming Nordeste natural - Guimar da
Costa last name
From: margaretvice...@gmail.com
To: Azores@googlegroups.com

Hello one and all,
For a while now I have been tracing my Paternal/Maternal "Melo" line. My Dad
always said his ggrandmother was from Agua Retorta and he was right I found
them there but the record showed they were naturals of Nordeste which led me to
Francisco de Melo, who now ends up being natural of Ribeira Grande and so the
quest continues. His full name may be Francisco de Melo Ferras as indicated in
one of his children's marriage records.

Francisco married 2nd marriage with Antonia do Canto in Nordeste on
05-Jan-1703. Antonia is the daughter of Manuel Furtado Barroso and Guimar da
Costa Morgadinho??
Is anyone connected to this line that could confirm Guimar's last name is in
fact Morgadinho please, because the record breaks in the middle of it and I'm
not certain if it is Morgadinho or if something else.

Attached is a copy of Francisco de Melo marriage record to Antonia do Canto my
7ggparents for quick viewing.
Thank you.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: NEPS Site

2012-06-30 Thread rcapodc
Hi Mike,

Sorry for the delay in answering but my Internet connection has been
in-and-out for two days!

When I do my research, I start with the baptism (no birth certs. until
1911). From there I then go and look for the parent's marriage record. I
then try to find all of the children born to that couple. You would be
surprised at how the name of the parents change in a twenty-year period!
You should always try and find all of the children.

It is up to you wether you do the research yourself or hire a genealogist
to do the research for you. Some people like to do there own others look
at the records and decide that they don't want to even try! If you decide
to do it yourself you need to go to the Azores GenWeb site and download
the genealogical word list and also the Portuguese Paleography which not
only has examples of documents but the given name/surname list which can
be very helpful.

Good luck to you either in doing it yourself or having someone else do it
for you!
