Elaine,

If you husband did a Y-DNA test, it will pick up his father's father's
father's line only. So his father Sharp, Grandpa Sharp, Great-Gpa Sharp,
etc.

Unless, this cousin is a Sharp on his other side, no it won't show a
relationship.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for AMARANTE, MACHADO, AZEVEDO, BETTENCOURT, SILVEIRA, in Velas, S. Jorge

2013-04-30 Thread pico
Rod,Amarante is often associated with ladies using the "dona" title.Look on the CCA website for the manuscript for Genealogias da ilha de S. Jorge and you will find other older generations of Amarante. You still have at least 50-100 years of records you can search on your own and hopefully you can find a link to the original settlers before the records run out.If it turns out along the way that you find a Pico or Terceira branch, I'd be interested.I do a lot of research for other people and myself in the Sao Jorge records and I often find people from Pico/Terceira. With Pico being only across the channel, it is to be expected, of course.Boa sorte,Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

2013-04-30 Thread Altino Demelo
Hi Bill,

Ria is my cousin. The couple she mentioned are also my great grandparents.

I just needed to clarify some of the info about this couple though.

José Raposo de Medeiros was Married to Rosa Amalia de Jesus Teixeira. (m. 17
Feb 1890 in São Jorge, Nordeste, São Miguel) both were born and baptized in
this parish and village.

They had the following children:
Ernesto, José, Manuel, Serafino, Jacintho, Maria da Luz, and Senhorinha.

Rosa Amalia never left the Azores. Jose Raposo was a businessman in Nordeste
and had various businesses as well as operating and inn.

Rosa died after a long life, so i don't think this is your couple. Good luck
with your search.

I am interested in a possible connection to Maria de Jesus Teixeira named in

I have heard from family members in the past that my grandmother, Felicidade
Teixeira, was born to Manuel and Emilia Rosa Teixeira who were both from Agua
Retorta.  Felicidade's mother died when she was eight and her father sent her
to stay with her older sister, Rosa, in either Ponta Delgada or Agua Retorta.
Around 1900 Felicidade was 12 years old, and was sent to Massachussets stay
with another older sister, Maria.  I am told that Maria Teixeira went left the
Azores single and married a Portuguese man who owned (or possible only worked
at some kind of a factory).  I am furhter told that Maria and her husband had
only one child, a daughter. Felicidade stayed with her sister Maria until she
married Boaventura Pacheco Demello in Cambridge, MA in 1905.

Do you know when Maria Teixeira immigrated?
Do you know of any siblings of this Maria Teixeira?
Did Jose Raposo own or work at a factory?
Did Jose and Maria have only one child, a dauther?

Thank you for any help.  I've been looking for some time to find a record of
the older sister Maria Teixeira that my great grandmother reportedly was sent
to stay with but have had not luck

The CCA works with Firefox, IE, and Chrome. I don't know what else.

My dad called last month and couldn't open his blah-blah Web site. I had
him clear his cache and cookies. You can google: clearing cache and
cookies on IE...or clearing cache and cookies on Firefox (or whatever you
use) and see if this does the trick.

I would NOT use AOL's browser for the CCA site.

[AZORES-Genealogy] How Much did it Cost ~1900 ? (PACHECO)

2013-04-30 Thread Betty
Hi again,

About 6-7 yrs. ago, I had done a lot of research on my husband's
grandparents, and I had enough pieces of information to type up an
informal report on them. I sent a copy to his siblings and aunts.
Because I am now helping the cousin, I pulled out my old report to
find a .date. for them.(They had moved recently, and can't find
some of their genealogy papers.) I was just now browsing the first
few pages, and was reminded of some of the .possible. ship
information. (I've never had time to .search. insistently for
that.)

When reminding myself of some of the notes, and one of the "family
stories," I became curious how much it cost around 1890-1910 to
leave the Azores, and, for example, come to Massachusetts.

One "family story" is that Elzira "Elsie" MOURA came over at Age 12 to
work for a family in Boston (~1905), and, when she had saved enough
money, she sent it back to her mother, so her mother and youngest
sister could come over.I haven't figured out, yet, whether the
other sister, Rosa MOURA, came over with Elsie or with her mother
~1910.And, I still don't know who Elsie traveled with.

(Their brothers seem to have married first and then came over ~1915.)

(Rosa married Charles PERRY in Cambridge or Somerville, MA; he was
probably a PEREIRA.)

[AZORES-Genealogy] Cambridge, MA (US) and PACHECO

2013-04-30 Thread Betty
Hi again,

I wanted to mention a few miscellaneous things. It was mentioned on
the MA/US List at www.rootsweb.com this week that the "Family &
Probate Records" for the Courts in MA are now on-line. For my own
family-tree, I went to the site and tried the HUTCHINSON name, but I
soon found out, if I'm understanding correctly, that you need to have
an "exact date" for the Probate record you are looking for. So, when
I tried to find the .will. for Mary HUTCHINSON dying in 1936, I got an
error message.

The records for the Registry of Deeds has already been on-line for a
while, and I don't remember that that is quite so difficult. I can
provide URL's later, but you can find a lot of information by just
going towww.mass.gov

And, I wanted to remind researchers of my husband's ancestors. His
grandparents, Antonio PACHECO and Elzira "Elsie" MOURA married in
Cambridge, MA/US in 1912.And, I've mentioned Elsie's parents
recently, Francisco MOURA from Ponta Delgada and Filomena Augusta da
ROSA - just finding out from Faial and Pico. And, then "Tony" seems
to have been born in Sao Roque, Sao Miguel, ~1885, as that is where
his parents lived. They were Joao PACHECO and Jacintha COSTA.I
don't know anything else about them, so I don't know about their
parents, or their other children.

FYI:When "Elsie" was widowed in 1928 when "Tony" was killed in a
car accident (with 3 other men from Cambridge), she was pregnant
with twins and delivered a month later. Both died before they were
2. She was left with 5 young children. It is my opinion that she
became very angry that her husband had died - tragically, and that
anger stayed with her the rest of her life. She never mentioned her
late husband to her grandchildren, etc. (d1980). And, she told them
that they had no PACHECO relatives in New England.A few yrs. ago a
researcher told me that another PACHECO family in Cambridge .was.
related to them.

(Information is on the Lists at www.rootsweb.com )

[AZORES-Genealogy] MEDEIROS and MOURA

2013-04-30 Thread Betty
Hi Eric,

Sorry, I thought I corrected myself before I clicked .Post. but I
guess I didn't.

And thank you for the Cambridge Directories. As I mentioned before,
Felix MEDEIROS fathered his youngest child in 1895 and Mary was a
widow in 1900. So, seeing him in 1893 and not in 1903 matches up
with that. And, I'm making note of where they lived, and forwarding
the notes to the cousin. They haven't gotten back to me, yet, but
sometimes they get busy with grandchildren. :o)

Have a pleasant day.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
