E!  My husband and I love the article on the whalers. Thank you for sharing this wonderful  information! His paternal grandfather Manuel Jose Pimentel, Jr-5 of Lages, Island of Pico  born 27 Nov. 1872 was one of those courageous men until he was badly injured. His line is Manuel Jose -4 ... Manuel Jose "Belisca"-3 ... Francisco Jose-2 ... Jose Silveira Avila -1, so far.   We were fortunate to have visited family on Pico and Faial three times; each time we fell more in love with the Azores and its people, while checking the additions to the great Whaling Museum and Avo's house just up the street from the museum.  Thank you for sharing this wonderful  information! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Oakland Family History Center

2013-06-16 Thread Tish M
Hi Pam,

Deni and I were in Oakland about 2 years ago and they had one reader that
could read the small reels. They kept a 64 magnification lens at the desk
that you could sign out. There was a very helpful man, Ralph Severson. He
volunteered there once a week.

If you find information you want, you can save it to a flash drive. It is
time consuming but as long as no one wants the machine, they let you use it.

You might like to take a trip to the Freitas Library (
http://portfsa.org/library/) in San Leandro since you are down here.
They have a pretty good collection of books on Portuguese subjects and are
also very helpful.
It would be good to call ahead and make an appointment as the staff is very
small.

Good hunting,

Tish

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Oakland Family History Center

2013-06-16 Thread Neil Teixeira
Pam,
Oakland FHL has one or two, manual (16mm) readers that magnify
(different lens ) the images-larger. This is most helpful if the records
are faded or hard to make out. (Don't bother useing their regular/normal 16
mm readers.) The Pro Scanner is great if you already know exactly, where
your item is-on the reel but is too slow. I only use the Pro Scanner for
print reasons due faded records. You could also puts your films on, one of
the three other (film) printing/copying machines, view your films on that
machine-then print as needed..as you go. These 3 film copy machines are
against the wall-near the Pro Scanner table. And they are not used very
much.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] mtDNA haplogroup J

2013-06-16 Thread Lorinda Sevenans
I did my mtDNA with National Geographic a couple of years ago and it came
out J* (not 1 or 2). I haven't worked too much on my material side since my
father's side (mostly English, been in the US since the 1620's) has been
much easier to track. The earliest maternal female I know of is my
great-grandmother, who was born in Mass. My grandmother and mother were
both born in Fairfield, CA, so I don't know which islands that line came
from. My grandfather was born on Sao Jorge, as were both of his parents and
that's as far back as I've gotten in that line.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] mtDNA haplogroup J

2013-06-16 Thread Isabella Baltar
Lorinda,

Thank you for contacting. I know about the National Geographic project, I
have done my DNA through Sorenson, some time ago as well. DNA tests has
changed a lot, so I decided to do another one this week, to have a deeper
information on my maternal side of the family. I hope this will help me
with a brick wall that I have at the moment and have enough information for
my two daughters.

If you decided at any time to search your maternal side, let me know what
you have, as our J group is small, the travelling between the island were
common, we may have connection.

 Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] mtDNA haplogroup J

 Hi all,

I have been working on my maternal genealogy and have it documented
until the second half of 1600's. Being able to know my haplogroup, J1, gave
new lights to my research and I hope this will help to break a brick wall I
have at the moment, although I'm working in different ways to find more.

The mtDNA on the J group is no more than 8% of the population of the
Central and Eastern islands (Santos et al. in Origin of Peopling in
 the Azores).

On the Y DNA, the significance for the J haplogroup is 10% for the
Central islands and 11.7% for the Eastern ones (Fernando et al. in Peopling
 of the Azores).

I would like to know if there is anyone in the group that has the
Haplogroup J (mtDNA) on the Central islands and the Eastern ones?

 Thank you,

 Isabella
