Thank you Eric and Gayle. This was very helpful. Now my friend has very nice tree that almost goes up to the 10 generations. I think she will be very happy. She has been wanting me to help her for years so she could give it to her children. This a beautiful start for their family history. I would not have been able to give them so much with your guidance. Thanks D-Original Message-

I'm helping a friend start her family tree. I have very little to go on and
now there seems to be a large gap in the records for Lajes. I'm looking for
Mary Jo Joaquin born on 9/2/1906 in Lajes, Pico. She is the child of Jose
Machado Joaquin and Maria Rosa. Jose Machado Joaquin was born 11/1861 in Lajes
and his wife was born 2/1868 in the same village. Jose is the child of Antonio
Machado Joaquin and Catarina L. Macedo both born in Lajes on unknown dates.
Maria Rosa was the daughter of Antonio da Rosa and Catarina da Rosa(?), both
born in Lajes on unknown dates. Maybe I'm reading the records wrong but there
are not very many pages listed on the CCA site for this village at this time
period. Can anyone help me get back on track? Does any one know about the
Joaquin family in Lajes? Thanks Doreen Caetano Jungk

Hi cousin Pat,

I am glad that you found some useful information in the update. A few
years ago Dot and I were able to get her mother's adoption records opened and
that led us to Prince Edward Island, Canada and her mother's scottish ancestry.
We went there and met her mother's only living brother who was in a nursing
home and had never knew he had a sister. It was a great experience. He treated
us as though he knew us all his life and was extremely happy as were we. Please
don't wait if you can go to visit your Canadian relatives, our tomorrows are
often wasted. Dot's uncle Finlay died a few months after our visit with him,
but he is still alive in our genealogy and grateful memories. We meet many
cousins and have made many new friends.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Machado Avila from Sao Jorge to California

2013-07-20 Thread pereira22
Hi Emil Dot,
Thanks for encouraging me to travel to Toronto to meet my Machado Avila Pico
cousins. But prevents me from doing those trips at this time of my life.
But you never know, miracles happen.

Speaking of miracles, I just found my Machado Avila grandmother's first born
child on Ancestry. For over 12 years, I searched for this baby boy named
Manuel, per my mother. I still remember the large framed picture on the wall of
this baby surrounded with roses. I was told he had passed away before he was a
year old. My grandparents, Thomas Pereira Jorge de Escobar Maria Conceicao
Avila, were married in New Bedford in 1898. They appeared on the 1900 RI census
as Thomas Mary Perry. No children. But today, thanks to Ancestry, I found
Manuel P George b. June 7, 1899 in Fairhaven, MA. That's their first born. All
the details match. Still haven't been able to find a death record in MA or RI
for baby Manuel. Years ago I phoned all the town vital statistic offices in MA
RI but never found the birth death record of this child. No death records
appeared online either. Sometimes people we contact do the best they can but
don't search adequately enough... so persistence pays off. This family of mine
has used the surnames, George, Jorge, Perry, Perry Jorge Pereira. As we all
know, this is what makes our Portuguese research so challenging.

Ancestry is free till tomorrow for their New England Collections.

The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel has a really good special going on during part of
April, 2014.

The special is stay 3 nights (at $85 USD + taxes) and get the 4th night

This would be from Monday, April 14th, through Sunday, April 20th, 2014.
Our conference would run from Tuesday, April 15th through Friday, April
18th. EASTER SUNDAY is April 20th.

So, if we pick the above dates, would it impact our attendance? If you
were to join us, would those dates work for you if you are considering
joining us (we are not going to hold you to it).

The other dates we are thinking of are Tuesday, April 8 through Friday,

The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel has a really good special going on during part
 of April, 2014.

The special is stay 3 nights (at $85 USD + taxes) and get the 4th night
 free (regularly $129 a night).

The other dates we are thinking of are Tuesday, April 8 through Friday,
April 11, 2014. We would get the group rate of $85 USD a night, but no
special of stay 3 nights and get the 4th night free.

 Thanks!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Borba's of Sao Jorge and Sebastopol, California

2013-07-20 Thread Adair Borba
I am not sure if what I have is correct, but I am trying to track down
information on my GG parents Manuel(Emanuel)Borba and Jennie Solomon
Silva

Manuel Borba 1851 and Jennie Solomon Silva 1857 came from the Sao
Jorge, Azores and married in Rhode Island, settling in Sebastopol,
California and having 11 children, one of whom is my grandfather Harry
Borba.

Manuel's parents were Jorge Ignacio Borba 1819 and Sabina Rozario
Mattos de Borba 1820

Manuel's siblings(I think?)

Vitorino Borba 1802
Andreza Borba 1805
Ana Borba 1808
Hilario Borba 1811
Faustino Borba 1815
Another Unknown Sibling

I have nothing on Manuel's wife Jennie Solomon Silva Borba

Any help would be appreciated...

Speaking of miracles, I just found my Machado Avila grandmother's first born

Manuel, per my mother. I still remember the large framed picture on the wall
of this baby surrounded with roses. I was told he had passed away before he
was a year old. My grandparents, Thomas Pereira Jorge de Escobar Maria

 Ancestry, I found Manuel P George b. June 7, 1899 in Fairhaven, MA. That's
their first born. All the details match. Still haven't been able to find a
death record in MA or RI for baby Manuel. Years ago I phoned all the town
vital statistic offices in MA RI but never found the birth death record
of this child. No death records appeared online either. Sometimes people we

persistence pays off. This family of mine has used the surnames, George,

The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel has a really good special going on during part of
April, 2014.

The special is stay 3 nights (at $85 USD + taxes) and get the 4th night free

This would be from Monday, April 14th, through Sunday, April 20th, 2014. Our

EASTER SUNDAY is April 20th.

So, if we pick the above dates, would it impact our attendance? If you were to
