Can you please tell me which of these came to the US and where they settled?
I have been trying to find them but it would be easier if I knew that they
came to the US.

***UPDATE***

Heres some information I gathered from my grandma.

My great-grandparents were Manuel Martins Maria Evangelina Martins. Manuel
died around 1953 or so and Maria died before than. Manuel re-married and had
one child.

The children of Manuel Martins Maria Evangelina:

Odete Martins-Not sure if she is still alive

Fernanda Martins-Resendes(Not sure if this is the correct last name). Has 3
daughters probably living in California. Names are Teresa, Paula
Esmeralda. Joao Resendes is the dad. Again not sure if Resendes was the last
name

Jose Martins-Died

Mariano Martins-Died but his wife and children came to Massachusetts also
and had one son working with MCI(a telephone company) and he got in contact
with the family ages ago.

Norberto Martins-probably alive

From the second marriage:

Julio Martins-probably still alive.

On a side note. My grandfather had a cousin living here in Massachusetts
that was Fillipino his name was Verba Martins and he had a daugther named
Maria Martins

Everyone hailed from Sao Jose-Ponta Delgada.

Again all this information was what my grandmother gave me today. Thank you
again for the help.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Pre 1720 Feteira, Faial Marriage Records

2013-10-09 Thread João Ventura
Hello

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feteira_(Horta)),
Feteira has been a parish since 1568.

According to the Azorean government archive catalog (
http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/details?id=981249), there's no marriage
books for Feteira prior to 1720. From these two facts, I'd deduce that they
did marry in Feteira before 1720, but the books are no longer in existence.
You'll have to resort to indirect sources for further research, such as
priest processes or similar.

2013-10-09 Thread Lee
Thank you Joao - now I'm not sure what I was looking at last night! Must
have been too late for me..lol

I found the marriage I was looking for (which turned not to be the right
couple) on the back sideo of page 77. Guess I'll have to keep
looking...I've gone through a 20+ year span and nothing for the coule I'm
look for yet (their son ws bonr in 1853 (have his birth record, so kow the
grandparents name, etc.)

It's too badk that the records for Livramento only go back to 1833/1834. I
need to go further back then that.

Again, Thanks!

PS - Although, I do have one little thing as a defenseI'm legally
blind, so may have just completly missed the page numbers!

I am trying to find their ship's manifest. There are a couple of Gabriel
Martins. Who in this family came to the United States and do you have any
idea when they came? Manuel and Maria E. and all their kids? Some of
their names are unusual and it should not be that difficult to find them.
Did they come into HI or MA??

Heres some information I gathered from my grandma.

My great-grandparents were Manuel Martins Maria Evangelina Martins.
Manuel died around 1953 or so and Maria died before than. Manuel re-married
 and had one child.

The children of Manuel Martins Maria Evangelina:

Odete Martins-Not sure if she is still alive

Fernanda Martins-Resendes(Not sure if this is the correct last name). Has
3 daughters probably living in California. Names are Teresa, Paula
Esmeralda. Joao Resendes is the dad. Again not sure if Resendes was the
 last name

Thank
 you again for the help.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Livramento Marriages 1833-1860 Missing Pages

2013-10-09 Thread Nancy Couto
Lee, before 1833/1834 or so, Livramento was part of the freguesia of Sao
Roque (Rosto do Cao). You can find the earlier records there, starting at
about 1600. Sao Roque is third in line to be added to the Ponta Delgada
records, and I'm crossing my fingers that the CCA adds them soon. A lot of
my ancestors came from there.

Good luck with your search.

2013-10-09 Thread Cheri Mello
Nancy M,

You need to be crystal clear when making a post. Your original post was 4
days ago. Many people won't remember what century you are researching. So
when you post the 60s or 70s, no one will know if you mean the 1860s and
1870s, or the 1960s and 1970s. And if you don't know how he got here, we
don't know how to help you. The ways to come to America are by land, boat,
or air. And there are lists for boarder crossings (by land), ship
manifests, and air manifests.

The best place to start is with a how to guide. It can be found on the the
Azores GenWeb here:

The main Azores GenWeb site (good to bookmark) can be found here:

Once you start with your ancestor's death and work backward, you will start
to make a timeline for him and then you will have a better idea of when he
arrived and what he did.

2013-10-09 Thread Cheri Mello
Jennifer D,

The records for Sao Mateus are online at the Center for Knowledge of the
Azores site. In Portuguese, that's Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores. We
just call it the CCA site.

http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/ig/

Click on the white circle on the south side of Terceira (the finger tip
must be touching that little dot - not the palm of the hand). On the next
screen, you will click the drop down for freguesia and pick Sao Mateus.
Then pick baptisms and the date range and start looking.

If you don't read Portuguese you can learn. Probably 3/4 of this list are
non-native speakers and many of us have learned to read. There's a link
on the Azores GenWeb here: http://goo.gl/ij44hc and here:

Part of Lusaweb is a subscription. If you want help you need to make it
easy for others to help you. You can post the link (if you are not in the
subscription part of Lusaweb) or you can type up what you know on your
family here.

I suggest you start a new post and put the surname(s) you are reseaching,
location of Candelaria, Pico, and some sort of date or range (mid to late
1800s) in the title. Names, dates, and places get the most responses on
this list. You may also want to post what you've looked at so people don't
duplicate your work.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Victorino Machado Pereira de Bertao and Amelia Da Conceicao Lemos

2013-10-09 Thread pico
Hello Jennifer,You are fairly closely related to a very good genealogist named David Bertao who wrote the book on the California Whalers a few years back.I don't know if he is active these days, but he used to do it a lot when you had to be in Portugal to see the books at the archive.I send him things I find on his ancestors from time to time, so am still in touch.About your Lemos line, unfortunately, her father, Joaquim Machado de Lemos was an "exposto" which means his mother abandoned him and he was raised with the help of the government there. His parents are unknown. But his wife was from Sao Jorge and her ancestry is possible to trace. For your Bertao line, I have always paid attention to all by this name because I am related to all of them, even though I don't have this surname in my own direct line. The father of the first named Bertao in Terceira was the brother of my ancestor, children of Antonio Alvares, born maybe about 1580.I hope you plan to get the Family Finder test, because you are sure to find many relatives with ancestors in this part of Terceira that link to you.I don't know if my DNA will match at a high enough level to show a link between us, but the link is there. And you'll find it interesting that your direct paternal line is not actually Bertao. As you go back in time, Bertao came from a maternal branch.Your oldest known male line ancestor is actually Costa and I think his wife is the sister to one of my ancestors, making yet another remote link. :-)Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

I am looking for more information on my great grandparents, Victorino Machado Pereira deBertao b. 10 May 1876 Sao Mateus, Terceira, Azores d. 15 Jul 1951 Sacramento, Sacramento, CA. I am looking for information about ther family prior to immigrating to the states in 1907 and 1909. I know his father's name was Ernesto and his mother was Mary Carlotta. My great grandmother's name was Amelia Da Conceicao Lemos b. 21 Mar 1888 Sao Mateus, Terceira, Azores her parents were Joaquim Machado deLemos and Isabel Mariana. If anyone can point me in the correct direction as to where I might find more information, I would be very appreciative.Thank you very much! --
