[AZORES-Genealogy] Can't understand word in left margin under the name Jacintho

2013-11-07 Thread Dano
The information written under the name notes that a Certificate of Baptism was
issued on the date mentioned; Certificates of Baptism were required for persons
who were to be confirmed (2nd baptism), married, or buried, in other parishes.
The practice continues to the present day. The specific word you asked about is
"Certidao," and it can indicate 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Can't understand word in left margin under the name Jacintho

2013-11-07 Thread pico
Hi Maria,Yes, this is a very common notation. The first part is:1ª (which means first)Next word is certidão (certificate)Then the date (22 Setembro 1883)Then is the title and name of the priest who made the notation.I believe C. is for cura (curate)But I can't read the name - maybe Junho, but I really doubt that, at least I have never seen Junho as a surname. It means on that date a copy of his baptism was made for some reason. Maybe he emigrated, because to get a passport, they first get a copy of their birth cert for that purpose.Boa sorte,Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Dear listers,

Can any one please tell me what the annotation in the left hand margin means. It's under the name Jacintho. It's followed by a date. The priest wrote beautifully but I don't know what the word means. I've seen it on many of the names so maybe you all already know what it means (?). Below is the link. Thanks.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Exorcisms? of children in Ginetes documents

2013-11-07 Thread Mary Bordi
In our church we also have the "Do you renounce Satan" and sprinkling of
everyone with holy water on Easter Sunday. (I think the Easter Vigil, also.)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Exorcisms? of children in Ginetes documents

2013-11-07 Thread Margaret Vicente
Terri,

I'm not sure if this will be of help to clarify what has already been
said by others but exorcism is a common pratice in baptism up to this
day. If you have been present at a baptism you might recall the
priest involves not only the parents and godparents in the ritual but
also present.

The exorcism is symbolic. Before the priests anoints the child with
the oil he exorcises (cleanses) the child or the adult by laying his
hand on them and asking the question do you renounce satan and
everyone responds yes we do.

BAPTISM is a "faith" sacrament in the C.C. and it marks a "rebirth of
the spirit" out of water by renouncing evil and accepting that which
is Good.

Cheers,

Margaret
