[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Y dna Matches between Pico and Flores, looking for a list of original Flores settlers.

2014-04-20 Thread Antonio Faria

Hi Herb. It does help, I should have more clearly stated that Joao Vieira
was and early settler to Pico from Portugal and that I think that Baltazar
my genealogical paternal ancestor was his descendant was born on Pico. I
can now identify three surnames found on both island Pico and Flores as
early settlers Vieira, Fernandes and Gomes. Thanks for checking.

Hi Antonio. I looked through Volume VI and I did not see any Gonsalves

were Pimenteis, Homens, Costas, Fernandes, Vazes, Gomes e Vieiras da
juridiscacao de Santa Cruz. The paragraph references of a ermidia small
church the ermidia de Sant'Ana and how these people were interred there.

I did not find any mention of Baltazar or Joao Vieira. I hope this helps
 some.

[AZORES-Genealogy] religious items

2014-04-20 Thread Mike
Friday while visiting my grandmother(92 yrs) old, she wanted me to have and
gave me the Rosery beads that belonged to my GGgrandmother Luisa Emilia da
Silveira, born may 1861 Salao, Faial. Married Jose da Rosa Pinheiro from
Cedros, Faial, they married and lived in Cedros but when she died it was in
Salao and she was buried there. I don't have those details about her
husband.
My question is at what time would she have been given the Rosery beads? Are
there any traditions? Such as passed down from generation to generation? Or
were they hers and did people who died take them on there next journey?
For the beads to have ended up here in the states she must have passed them
down to my Ggrandfather or to her one daughter that also came to the states?

My grandmother who gave them to me is Italian, but my grandfather was
Portuguese of Azorean descent who had the Rosery beads until he passed.

I'm curious about the histories about how, why, and who obtained the beads
which I now hold in my hand. They are made out of all medal, the details
are all hand made and spectacular. You can tell they are very old.
Should I have them blessed now that they are in my possesion?
I know that's a lot of questions but i've never been given such a gift and
I want to make sure I treat them as they should.
Thank you!!!
Mike

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with Marriage Record

2014-04-20 Thread Dano

*Manoel da Mota's father's surname is Vasconcellos. As for Anna's mother,
women (mothers) were not always mentioned in early records - especially, if
they weren't of noble birth. Apparently, she died sometime in years between
Anna's birth, and her marriage to Manoel da Mota. That Goncalo was a
widower, is stated in this very record by the word viuvo, following
Goncalo Mendes' surname. You are progressing rapidly, indeed, my friend -
now let's see you tackle Goncalo's Baptismal Record, you only have forty,

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] religious items

2014-04-20 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi Mike,

Rosary Beads could be given at various times of special religious significance
such as at First Communion or Confirmation. Other times they were purchased by
the person.

I have the rosary beads that belonged to both my grandmothers and feel a
connection to them whenever I hold them or use them. Many times at burial
rosary beads are buried with the person but usually an inexpensive set is used.

I am not sure if the customs are much different in the Acores from here.

2014-04-20 Thread Emil
He suffered all his pain for our sins. If we truly believe and want to lessen
some of that pain on the cross, we must remember our sin avoidance does that.
Have a healthy and Happy Easter with your family and friends.

I think it might be something more unusual than those names. So finding more baptisms is my recommendation. It might be some alcunha and just about anything.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Actually, I do see a z as the third letter. Bear in mind that in those
days z s looked much like the printed version of today (like the one at
the beginning of my reply). I fact, although it is faint,
I see the third letter as z, more readily than as a v.
