Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Emigration from Azores to Australia
Hi JR Some time ago Eliseu Manuel Pacheco da Silva posted this - List of Azorean participants in an expedition to New Holland (Australia) to look for Gold. They left S. Miguel in 28 July 1853 aboard the English boat “Water Lily”. The trip took 108 days. They arrived on the 13th November. The expedition landed in Geelong, main port of Por-Philip, a town as big as Ponta Delgada in the 19th century. Then they took a ship to Melbourn and from there they went to Fores Crick mines. The adventure was not profitable for them. The investors had a very big loss. João de Sousa Dourado, from Ponta Graça, was one of the feww who profited from. For a long period of time he received interest on the money he invested there. Jacinto António dos Reis married there and succeded in Melbourn. They were a well knownand very considered family there. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Emigration from Azores to Australia
Hi JR . There was a ship called 'The Water Lily that departed the Azores for Victoria Australia in the 1800's. Many of the people from the Azores went hunting for gold in the gold rush in Victoria Australia. I am a decendant of one. My GGG Grandfather came from the Azores to Australia and lived in the Ballarat region of Victoria. He did not come on the Water Lily and im still searching for details of his arrival. I have his Australia marriage cert but no entry details. Maria Lima who is a member of this group , did have relations on the Water Lily and she kindly gave me a copy of the ships list. I will post it as soon as I can find it, with the hope that you may find a name on it of your ancestor. Mariam Lima's ancestors lived in the region of Creswick and where miners, they have their graves there and are registered. If you can give me details of youre ancestor , I will go to the library and check the records to see if there are any for him. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Emigration from Azores to Australia
Well thank you very much! How do you want me to send the info. I can post or send it privately. This is a connection to my wife's family. It seems her grandfather was related to the Sousa Dourado's through his grandparents, and inherited property from them. There are at least two by the name of Joao de Sousa Dourado and they all Sousa Dourados descend from the same family. If you don't already know Dourado means gold. So for me this now becomes a mining expedition, just like the people who went to Australia. I have to determine when they adopted the name Dourado, as this seems too good to be true. All the Sousa Dourado's originate from Porto Formoso and settled in Ponta Garca by 1800. I know Eliseu has a close connection with Porto Formoso. The story is that one Jose de Sousa Dourado went to Australia to work and returned wealthy. I will try to get more details to see if it could have have been Joao. This Jose had a sister named Jacinta with same last name. They were godparents to many of my wife's ancestors. Since neither Jose or his sister married, it was my wife's grandfather that looked after them when they were older. Jose has two certifications noted on his birth registry, usually issued for passport or other events. Certified- May 12- 1853 and April 8, 1862 Does this help? Let me know what kind of info you need. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Emigration from Azores to Australia
JR, Regarding the Sao Miguel passaportesI know that some of the missing ones were NOT missing in the 1980s, when Bob De Mello did his passengers to Hawaii book. He extracted passengers from the 1890s and that book is missing. Also, Roberta Ingram sent me a link for passengers who left Sao Miguel in the late 1770s, some 1800s and went to Brazil. Someone had those books and extracted the information from them. And probably forgot to return them. I hope someone finds them one day and returns those books to the archive. They have more information in then to other locations that weren't extracted. Didn't a few of the Azoreans wander over to New Zealand as well? Probably from Australia? I'm not sure yet if she and Anna de Jesus Tavares are the same person yet, but strongly think they may be. I've found very few Maiatos in Rabo so far. By chance, did Anna Joaquina have a sister named Joaquina Iganacia who married Joao da Costa Maiato? They had a daughter Marianna born October 29, 1857. The record states Joaquina is the daughter of Francisco Tavares de Brum and Umbelina Rosa. Joao da Cista Maiato is listed as the son of Manoel da Costa Maiato and Quiteria de Jesus. All that I know so far is that Ventura Pacheco de Mello was born in March 1885 (the 3rd, I think) the son of Francisco Oacheco de Mello and Rita de Jesus. Maternal grandparents were Manoel da Costa Maiato and Ana de Jesus Tavares (Anna Joaquina?). Paternal of Francisco Pacheco de Mello and Helena Isabel (or as I've found so far Helena Isabel, Elena Isabel, Elena Rosa AND as Elena Thomazia!! Her name is driving me crazy lol). I think you are correct that when Francisco de Mekko and Rosa married in 1911 it may have been a second marriage for both.
