RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Moniz Surname 1940s Fall River

2014-12-04 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Good Morning Laura,

I am glad you have joined the Azores Islands DNA Project. I have been looking
at my kits this morning and you are a match to my dad, Francis Richard
Pimentel, my sister, Nina Kewley, my dad’s first Cousin, Shirley Watson, and
another first cousin of my dad, Robert Lee Carvalho .

The good news of all this is that because my dad’s first cousin Shirley is only
½ Portuguese that eliminates half the potential common ancestor names. I will
send you a chart with the names privately.

Rick

My name is Laura and I was adopted at birth in 1969. I have been attempting to
identify my biological father and trace my paternal line. I have taken the
Ancestry.com dna test and uploaded my dna profile to Family Tree DNA, as well
as GEDMatch.

My biological mother was of Irish, German, English and Scottish decent, so I am
confident that matches of Portuguese decent come from my paternal line.

My DNA matches indicate that my paternal ancestors were from the Island of Sao
Miguel, Acores.

The only information that I have regarding my father is that his went by the
name Bobby Moniz. He was approximately 23 years old in 1968 and his family was
from the Fall River/Seekonk area. He met my biological mother near her
father's home in Riverside (East Providence), Rhode Island, where they briefly
dated. He was never told of her pregnancy. She described him as a
short/stocky man with dark, kinky curly hair. She remembers he drove a blue
Ford Farlane. They spent time together at Sabin Point Park in Riverside, Rhode
Island.

I would be interested in any Moniz surname lines with ancestors from Sao Miguel
who may have immigrated and/or lived in the Fall River/Seekonk/East Providence
area between 1940 and 1970.

2014-12-04 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi Laura,

I meant to add that I did not have any Moniz in the chart I sent you. This
would mean that most likely a female sibling of one of the people on the chart
could have married a Moniz. Then if you start throwing in Portuguese name
changes it could get confusing.

I also see we have several common matches one of which is Stanley Perry who is
my Dad’s 5th cousin.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Salgado family: Help needed

2014-12-04 Thread mances
John,

I descend from Antonio da Costa Salgado and Ana Furtado whose daughter Ana
Furtado married Francisco da Costa on 20 aug 1698 in Ponta Garça. I could
not find yet the connection with the Salgado's from Vila Franca.
I've been told that these Salgado's from Vila Franca came from Galicia when
Portugal was under the rule of the hispanic monarchy, 1580 - 1640. At this
time period there was a company of galician troops in Vila Franca. After
the restoration the galician surnames were gradually dropped out and
replaced by the traditional azorean surnames into families linked to the
first settlers, avoiding the patronymics that could indicate a hebraic
origin.

I looked at my old notes from 2003 when I was researching on the microfilms
and found this:

Vila Franca.

Filha de Pedro Coelho e Catarina Manuel (f.)

Test.: Francisco Arruda da Cunha, , Bartolomeu Lopes e Manuel Garcia.

. 12 out 1636 (CCA #39) – Antonio Salgado x Isabel Dias

Filho de Antonio Salgado e Beatriz de Fontes

Filha de Manuel Gaspar (f.) e Lucia Fernandes

Moradores nesta freguesia.

Test: Manuel da Ponte Leitão, capitão Antonio Botelho de Sousa, Francisco
Gonçalves e João de Deus, moradores nesta freguesia.

2. Matriz, Vila Franca – batismos:

. 11 fev 1624 (CCA #55) – Braz, filho de Antonio Salgado e Beatriz de
Oliveira. Pd: Jordão Jácome e Águeda Roiz.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Death Record Info Santa Clara Nov. 2014

2014-12-04 Thread "E" Sharp
I am trying to find out about a death that I believe occurred this
past Thanksgiving day (2014) in Santa Clara, SC County CA. There is
no/will be no obituary I am told. This is a grandparent of a close
family member. Any ideas of how I can find out without having to wait
for it to be posted on SSDI? I do know the cemetery name. Should I
call them?

Thank you.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA update; response time

Cheri you stated that you have some 10 dollar codes ? Please send me one for
the Family Finder. Thanks Ray

Thank you to everyone who has been sending me their unused Mystery Rewards
codes.  Keep them coming.  I believe I am caught up on them.  If you requested
a code and I did not answer you, that was not my intent.  Email me again.  I
currently have a lot of the $10 off codes.  The $20 or $25 off are more
difficult to find.  So far, no one (in the Azores project or in the DNA
community) has found one of the $49 off a Family Finder test.

General DNA questions:  It took me 2 days, but I believe I have caught up with
all the questions. Here's some of what I'm getting.

1) Question: I don't know what DNA test to order.
Answer: Order Family Finder.

2) Question:  Do I test myself or my sibling (or cousin or or or)? (this would
be with a Family Finder test)
Answer:  If it is in your budget, test both of you.  You may have inherited a
different 1.5% of DNA from that ancestor 200 years ago than your sibling
inherited.  Therefore, you and your sibling will have different DISTANT cousin
matches.  Also, you'll be able to figure out matches easier using you and your
sibling, you and your first cousin, etc. (Note:  I will find you a code for
each test you order).

3) Question: I don't know if I should test my DNA or not.  My genealogy is done
and I don't have anything to contribute.
Answer:  Yes you do have something to contribute. Test your DNA. It's like
leaving a legacy.  Since the Family Finder test is like a 1000 piece puzzle, we
need all 1000 pieces to put it together.  You may have pieces 150-200 in your
DNA and you could be the person that helps us link lines together.

Then there are the specific DNA questions about getting to the lineage of a
particular ancestor.  If you email me and don't get a response back soon enough
(within a day), go ahead and email Rick, Nancy Jean, or Kalani.  Just let them
know you emailed me too and I haven't answered.

Due to work schedule this month, I may take more than a day to answer
questions, especially if you are emailing on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.
This will clear up on Dec. 18th for me.  So if I don't answer you soon enough,
email Rick, Nancy Jean, or Kalani.
