[AZORES-Genealogy] Why migrate to the Azores?

2015-09-16 Thread Cheri Mello
Repost for Miguel Deavery, migueldeavery at gmail.com

I often wonder why some of our ancestors went to the Azores ?Did they go
freely or were they forced ? Beautiful Islands in the middle of nowhere.I
think our ancestors were courageous to leave Portugal than go to the
Azores and than leave again to go throughout the world to give us
opportunities they never had in their own lives.I know the Azores Islands
are beautiful but it must of been isolating for those living there not to
long ago. I once heard a saying but where I don't recall. The saying was
...There is Lisbon and everything else is scenery.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Census

You might try you public library to see if they have Ancestry.com. I know
that I can access Ancestry through my library site from home.

If you go to a public library, they have Ancestry for free, but usually
there's a time limit on the computers.

Census Online has some transcriptions (not free images) for some states
and some counties. It is not complete. http://www.census-online.com/

Family Search (www.familysearch.org) has some and some have the images
for free. I think others link you back to Ancestry.

Some counties have transcribed the census and have placed an abstract
online. You can find these by going through www.usgenweb.org and
 picking your state.

 Good luck,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Jose da Silva, b. about 1833, city?, Faial, Azores - shanghaied age 14 and brough aboad a cargo bark to Long Island, NY - Looking for any information.

2015-09-16 Thread R Mac
Hi, Eric

Therein lies the problem. The local church that they were married at went
under reconstruction/remodeling some years after their marriage. The church
records were temporarily stored off site on the North Fork of Long Island.
The storage building that help their license was destroyed when the
facility caught fire. As luck would have it, Joseph and Catherine's copy
were somehow lost along the way. I have Joseph's citizenship papers, Navy
discharge records, etc. and all I can tell is that he was born in 1833 (I
also have that on a picture of his headstone).

I do have a picture of the family crest ring that I can post if you are
interested in seeing it. The only thing is it was taken by my cousin who
was a little out of focus with some of the pictures. Apparently from the
way the ring wore in time, it was at least 18K.

2015-09-16 Thread Elizabeth Migliori
Thanks, not sure if I have enough info that's why I wanted to search
through census slowly.
Ancestry was just on sale and I didn't think I needed it anymore as I
usually use the tombo site.
But perhaps you could give it a quick try. Don't spend alot of time on it.

John Andrade died in Bristol, R.I. in 1945 or 46. (don't know if you have
access to deaths)
John Andrade wife Maria. they had 11 children.Might show something in
1940 Census in Bristol, R.I.
I was hoping to find what Island they came from. They also lived in
Portsmouth R,I. but I think it was before that.

Thx

Your choices for the dispensations are:
1) Fly to Angra and view them yourself
2) Hire João Ventura, the archivist, to look for you. Contact him at
heroi99 at yahoo.com for his fees and availability.

This is great. Where does one look to find the actual dispensations. I'm
very curious about my GG Granduncle and marriage to his niece

Thanks.

Just to follow up to Cheri's note another option is to go to your nearest
Family History Center to get free full access to Ancestry and the census. I
let my Ancestry subscription lapse so I started using FHC's until I happily
discovered the local library option. I take advantage of that often and it
works very well for me.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Census

2015-09-16 Thread Cheri Mello
 Liz,

If you go to a public library, they have Ancestry for free, but usually
there's a time limit on the computers.

Census Online has some transcriptions (not free images) for some states and
some counties. It is not complete. http://www.census-online.com/

Family Search (www.familysearch.org) has some and some have the images for
free. I think others link you back to Ancestry.

Some counties have transcribed the census and have placed an abstract
online. You can find these by going through www.usgenweb.org and picking
your state.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dispensations and Degrees of Consanguinity and Affinity

2015-09-16 Thread Cheri Mello
I lost count of the cousin marriages that I come from. 14? 16? The vast
majority were poor peasants.

Here's one of mine:

23 Nov 1819 Victorino de Mello & Maria Joaquina, Ponta Garca, Sao Miguel
island
Note: Her name is listed as Maria Claudina in the dispensation. (It rhymes
with Joaquina).

The dispensation stated the relationship of 3rd degree of consanguinity.
Also, it listed the following that needed to be done to redeem themselves
(translated through Joao Ventura, genealogist):

Victorino must serve the parish for 4 months and fast all day on Friday and
Saturday. The rosary must be prayed each day to the purity of our Lady.

Victorino's mother was Constancia de Jesus or could be known as Constancia
de Pimentel.

The priest interviewed both Victorino and Maria (appears to be separate
interviews) He asked both Victorino and Maria if they had every kissed or
anything else. Both said no, not even holding hands. Victorino said that
he needed to marry his cousin as the people in the freguesia had been
speaking about her (I guess they were seen together) and since she had a
reputation, he felt obliged to marry her.

(Note: Victorino was the 5th kid and the 3rd to live to adulthood. Maria
was one of the middle kids as well).
===
Another dispensation from the 18-teens, Achada, Sao Miguel island.
Manuel Pacheco Dutra & Maria de Jesus Pacheco. Both appear to be the oldest
in their family.

The dispensation was applied for twice. Through the translation of Joao
Ventura, genealogist in Angra, it said:

First dispensation (1818?)
Maria was a "fragile and miserable" girl (her spirit/soul was fragile and
miserable). This misery was made public, as she had a child out of
wedlock. No age was given for her. Manuel stated that he was 25 years
old. It also stated that they both owned some property. His property
brought in $5000 reis a year and hers brought in $4000 reis a year.

Second dispensation (1819?)
Manuel was now 23 years old. Maria was living in Lomba da Feiteria. They
could not resist the flesh. He was living with his mother and she was
living with her aunt. Maria was a fragile and miserable girl (in
spirit/soul) that allowed herself to be seduced by him. Manuel was working
for his uncle Francisco Pacheco Dutra (Maria's father). When Francisco
found out Maria was pregnant, he threw her out of the house. She was a
poor and miserable girl (they stated this frequently). It also stated that
Manuel and Maria had some land to rent. It stated that his mother was dead
and her father was dead (this was backwards as he was living with his
mother and her father threw her out of the house; also the death
certificates prove they wrote this backwards).

Joao Ventura, genealogist, feels that the second dispensation was probably
filed because they had money from the land and were able to send for the
dispensation.
=
The language of the time period is funny by today's standards (couldn't
resist the flesh). The woman was basically at fault (they bashed Maria over
and over by calling her a "miserable" girl, yet nothing was said about
Manuel doing the deed).

Not all married for land and money. Most of mine were poor. I think they
just went to church with their cousins, went to a festa with their cousins,
and one day they have lunch brought to them by their cousin Maria and she's
not a little girl anymore. And the food is good. Half the freguesia is your
cousin, so you just wind up marrying your cousin.

I can't remember if my dispensations stated how they were married and gave
the lineage. I may not have written it down as I already had it.

Not all dispensations exist. Many were lost over time.

Dispensations in Cape Verde are called Justifications and they draw out the
trees.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dispensations and Degrees of Consanguinity and Affinity

2015-09-16 Thread George Medeiros
Thanks for the information on the degrees of dispensation.

The practice of marrying one's relative to keep the land and money in the
family wasn't uncommon in many cultures which I have discovered in my reading
of history which is a subject of interest to me.

This is a speculation but does anyone have any historical information in
regards to this practice being done in the Azores because of a lack of males
available to marry ? I can't recall now were I read this info but I recall
reading somewhere that there was a time mainland Portugal would send ships go
to the Azores Islands to forcibly recruit males 12 and above to send them to
the Portuguese colonies. Thus there would be a depletion of non related males
for women to marry. British ships that came into Azores harbors would take
these males out of the Azores to help them avoid being forcibly enlisted by the
Portuguese Government.

Don't take this info as fact because I don't recall the source were I read
this info about enforced enlistment.
