I'm in California too :) I guess that there are two likely possibilities: either that Joam was well connected, or that he was a soldier (or possibly a sailor). I don't know much about military service in mid 18th century Azores/Portugal, but around 1800 Portugal was involved on and off in the Napoleonic wars as an ally of Britain. I don't know where the barracks might have been located in the city, and from what I can gather, the area around the church seems to have been fairly well-to-do-- so both theories seem viable. Also for a historical context, the devastating Lisbon Earthquake was in 1755 (earthquake + fire + tsunami = most of the city in ruins). If you think about what travel was like between the American colonies and Europe in the mid 1700's, then you can get a fairly good idea of how easy it was to travel between the Azores and Lisbon. It was perhaps more unusual than difficult.
