Hi Christian,

Fathers and sons could--and often did-- have different last names.  Here's 
a good resource on the topic:

As for the name in the photo you posted, I think that it may be Antonio de 
Souza Netto ... and then it does look like "Adam" but that seems 
unlikely... perhaps someone else can suggest something better?

The groom was 19, and the bride 26, and IIRC both were born in the same 
freguesia, so you should be able to find their baptisms fairly easily.

Is there a record of individuals or family's moving from one island to 
another? If so, where would I find it? Lately I've been researching my 4th 
great grandparents, Jose Ignacio de Andrade & Barbara Jacintha and their 7 
sons. All were born in Assuncao, Vila do Porto, Santa Maria. I found 
baptismo records for everyone and Jose & Barbara casamentos, but no 
marriage records for the children nor obitos for anyone. Until 1841 when my 
3rd great grandfather Bernadino Jose de Andrade (Jose & Barbara's first 
born) married Escolastica Maria do Espirito Santo in Estralla, Ribeira 
Grande, Sao Miguel. So either Bernardino or the whole de Andrade/Jacintha 
family moved between 1836-1841.

There was no "ja defuncto" or abbreviations for that after the name.
Margaret had it right. I should not be answering emails at 4 a.m.!

Joam to JoãoI didn't major languages but the sound that was produced in
old Portuguese by the "am" was replaces by the "ão" and the language was
modernized. You will see Conceicam which is now Conceição, Sam Jorge island
to São Jorge, etc.

I really appreciate the next marriage and the full translation Margaret! You 
are amazingly generous!

I thought is was Suzana myself, but was unsure because I had not seen that one 
in the azores.  Interesting that Joan became Joao -- did not know that but 
having looked backwards through records it makes sense because Joao fades and 
Joan becomes popular.

This is now up at 5 generations part my immigrant ancestor! Thanks! Now I'll go 
death and baptism hunting for them and possible siblings :-)

Date is correct.

Antonio Machado Cardoso son of Joao Cardoso, and of his wife Maria das
Candeyas (Candeias) natural of this Matrix church and parishioner of  S.
Lazaro's Parish Church of this jurisdiction where he met the Lent precepts,
near and past.and Barbara Josefa daughter of Joam (Joao) Machado Cabral de
F.o, and of his wife Susana Maria, natural and parishioner of the Santa
Catarina Matrix (Matriz), where both bride and groom were baptised. and she
satisfied the next Lent's precepts.
They received the blessings in the conformity of the Roman liturgy
witnessed by Captain Francisco Ferreira de Borba of this parish and Joao
Machado de Avila, of S. Lazaro's parish.

NB. Father of the Bride: Joao Machado Cabral de F.o (Filho).  This is my
guess but you will have to verify by finding Barbara's and siblings baptism.

I searched back and found Joao's father but unfortunately is in the same
short form.  There's a nother surname "Fialho" but it's unlikely by the way
(f.o) is entered.  Nov 2 1748, left side

You need need full names, dates, and places to get started in genealogy. Do

I connected the two Thomas Bettencourts by marriage records and children 
right down to the June 15th birthday of his daughter Adelaide! This is so 
cool becauase this solidifies my first DNA match that isn't French Canadian 
and proves that my father (who wasn't married to my mother) actually is my 
father in spite of his commentary to the contrary.

What's kinda weird about this marriage record on another note is that it's 
Thomas da Souza, son of Jose Correa da Bettencourt marrying Maria Perpetua 
de Bettencourt, daughter of Anthony da Souza. Is this normal over there or 
is it possible that the documenter switched heir last names?

following image is a title or more name. Palto Adam seems like a weird name

Yes it likely is April instead of March as I first thought..  The "A" and 
"b" together in such compact writing can take a shape resembling an "M".  
That explains why the next-to-last letter has a dot above rather than a 
cedilla below.  I have tried to make the last word in the year "nove" but I 
just can't.  It still looks like oito to me.
