2016-11-13 Thread George Sousa
I would appreciate your help trying to decipher the side note of Antonio's
baptismal record. In other words... what does it say and what does it mean?
I noticed that the same note appears on his wife's baptismal record as well
(I can make out 23 d'Outubro de 1877).

Here is a link to Antonio's...

and here is a link to his wife's (Florinda)...

For several years now we have been cautioning researchers about how/when to
order the Social Security SS5 Form. We used to be able to order the form for
$27 knowing the SS number and $29 without the number. Several years ago (I
think after 911 especially) the SS Dept. would send you the info but they would
have the parent's names blacked out and sometimes even the birthdate of the
person. It looks like in 2015 the SS Dept. made a change and said that if the
person you are asking for is 120 years or more old that you CAN get the info
that is on the original form, OR, if the parent's are over 100 but then most of
the time that's the info we want and may not be able to give! So, look into it
once again, you can do it online or by mail. to to the link I presented and
read the article from the Legal Genealogist and it gives you the snailmail
addy. You can go to Socialsecurity.gov and find the request form online and do
it that way also. Good luck!

Mary,I think that I would try to find Manuel J. coming to the USA on the
Passport lists. Maybe even Marie Margarida too in the Angra Passport books.
You may find a fuller name on the parent's. If you are lucky you may even
find the village listed. The only other thing I can think of is to find ALL
of the children of Manuel & Maria M. hoping that they may have listed a
village on one of the birth records. If not there, the Catholic Church
baptismal records for the children.

[AZORES-Genealogy] In search of: Maria Margarida (Costa?) of Sao George

2016-11-13 Thread Mary Pimentel Wheeler
Hi friends: I may have sniffed out a new trail on one of my "Mystery
Maria's" (my GGrandmother). I know about her marriage and death, *but am
working on her birth and beyond (if possible)*. Her marriage in Madera CA
lists her as Mary Souza, and her death in 1903 lists her as being 19 years
old and having been born in Boston USA. She was married and known as Mary
C. Evangelho (married name) by then. I know from her brother's Social
Security record that their mother's maiden name was Costa.

So here is my new trail:

*Found birth record for Mary Souza, born Boston USA, 26 OCT 1884.*I
think this is probably her, age and place fits perfectly, and there were no
other Maria/Maria Souza's born around that time.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-695K-15?i=203=1536925

Record lists her father as Manuel J, from St. Michaels Azores.
Record lists her mother as Maria M, from St. George Azores.

*Found Marriage of her parents: Manuel J and Maria M, married 30 NOV 1872,
in Boston USA*
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/results?count=20=%2Bsurname%3Asouza~%20%2Bmarriage_place%3ABoston~%20%2Bmarriage_year%3A1872-1872~_id=1469062

Record lists him as Manuel J Souza, age 30, Carpenter. Born St.
Michaels Azores, his parents are Manoel and Florinda
Record lists her as Maria Margarida, age 25. Born in St. George
Azores. Her parents are Joseph and Elizabeth. (This is where the possible
Costa surname came from)

If anyone has info on Manuel J or Maria Margarida, or their parents -
please let me know. I've started searching the St George records for a
Maria M, born around 1847ish, but have still have a lot of churches to go
through.

thank you!

Mary

My mom, who was half Azorean, a quarter Irish and a quarter Prussian:

12% Metal, 51% Farmer, 37% Hunter Gatherer and 0% Non European.

I am half of what she is combined with my father's Scots Irish, French and
who knows what so I came out:

10% Metal, 49% Farmer, 41% Hunter Gatherer and 0% Non European.

I thought that mixed with my father I might be far different. Interesting.
