Don't skip over generations. Work from the known to the unknown. And do
your lines that have been in America for awhile before tackling your
immigrant lines. You'll be learning research strategies with the most
commonly used records that you can eventually apply to an immigrant
ancestor. Attend classes and workshops. It's not as easy as the
Ancestry.com commercials lead you to believe. They make it look as if you
follow some green leaves and Voila! There's your tree. Nope, you'll have
multiple sources and you'll need to analyzing and deciding which applies to
you.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need some help again :0)

2017-03-22 Thread Cheri Mello
Ancestries dot com is not a legitimate site. Or if it is, I doubt that they
have anything in the way of good records. The legitimate genealogy web site
is Ancestry.com. They run the commercials on TV. You'd probably need the
World Membership package to lookup a couple of pieces of information. I'd
go to the library and use their Ancestry.com subscription. Then you can
just subscribe to the U.S. records membership (or whatever it's called
now). You can use that for censuses and stuff on all your lines. It would
cost you less money.

You should find out if there's a genealogy society near you. Then go.
They'll have meetings, classes, lecturers. You can also go to your local
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (or Mormons) and see if they
have a Family History Center (FHC). Not all LDS churches have FHCs so you
may have to drive over to the next one. They may offer classes on genealogy
as well. Also, go to your public library and check out some books on
genealogy. Look over them and the one you like the most - read it. I like
Emily Anne Croom's "Unpuzzling Your Past." That one kinda grabbed me. I
bought my own copy so I could use it for reference at home.

And if you have non-immigrant lines, trace them first. Researching
immigrant lines is tougher than researching lines that have been in America
since George Washington.

I agree with Cheri in that the passports are a great place to start for you.
You have an approximate date so if you find your ancestor, the records from
that time generally include where they were from as well as parents. It will be
a great clue to guide you to the appropriate church records.

Good luck and happy hunting!
