It looks like you found your Lucinda. The birth record for 1881 is the
correct person the father is Miguel de Arruda and the mother is Maria Julia
Ferreira.

Going to America in 1911. Her age at the time was 29 and she was Married.
The writing is very tiny but readable. Please see # 484

in Ribeira Seca, which like Ribeirinha can be found in Ribeira Grande. The
point is, sometimes people moved around even though they would list only

2017-04-04 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I searched the obits and did not find anything on this Lucinda. So I would put
her in the mix. The problem I see is this would put her age off from the 1920
census which says she was 37. This would make her 39 off by two years, not
necessarily a deal breaker but enough to try and find more evidence. What is
the complete snippit with the three names? Can you link the whole thing? The
problem with that is the name is Manuel instead of Miguel as on this latest
Lucinda record.

Ok I am confused. Most ship logs I have seen it just names the passenger not
the names of the parents (unless they are also passengers).

I looked at the 1920 US census earlier today and it says that Honerio came to
the US in 1908 and Lucinda came in 1912. Is there a way you can show the
complete record of the snippit you show below?

The birth years on the 1920 census agree with the information you have shown us
so far. Unless you can show positive information on tying Manuel Arruda to
Lucinda I am inclined to believe that your Lucinda is one of the two Lucinda’s
we have found in the records for 1884.

Lucinda would have sailed from the Acores using her name and not the last name
of Honerio. This is why I am inclined to believe that it is one of the two
Lucinda’s

At the start of this thread you said the ship she arrived on was the Romanic in
1911. The Romanic last arrived in NY in Nov of 1910. Was this the port she
arrived at?

I have to go back and see if the census says anything about when she married.
If she was single when she arrived in the US then she could have married in
Attleboro. If she married in the Acores then it must have been after 1905.

three of the Lucinca’s there are no margin notes on the records. The next step
is to check Obitos. And see if I can find any deaths to try and eliminate any
of them. Of all three I like this one born in 1883 the best. Somehow I feel
uncomfortable about this Manuel Arruda being the father.

I have a very large data base coming from Ribeirinha and there is only one
Manuel Arruda that married and is about the right age but looking at all the
births in 1883 and 1884 they did not have any girls born to this couple.

Richard look on your baptism data base and look at 1881 #16. There is a
Lucinda with parents Miguel Arruda and Maria Julia Feriera. I haven't

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] New Ethnicity Estimates for Family Tree DNA

2017-04-04 Thread Mary Bordi
Well, I show 0% Iberian but I am only one quarter Azprean.

My mom, who is half Azorean, shows up as 11% Iberian. And 12% Sephardic.
She is also British Isles and East Europe and West and Central Europe
(Irish And Prussian Grandparents on the non Portuguese side so not
surprising).

For those who have tested with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), it appears that
they have released their new ethnicity ESTIMATES. This is version 3 of this
 interesting tool.

Since it's brand new, I'll just start with looking at my family. The
Portuguese was clustered into Southern Europe, a big purple swath from
Portugal to Spain to Italy then Greece. Good news! They've split the
western part (Spain and Portugal) into Iberian and the eastern part (Italy
and Greece) into Southeast Europe. My dad, 50% Portuguese is now 12%
Iberian and 13% Southeast Europe! His British Isles (the other 50%) is
gone! I guess the key word is they are still ESTIMATES.

I agree with MaryAnn, and I understand they are only estimates. My father and
his parents are Portuguese, yet my estimates do not show any. My mother who's
father is English and mother is Swedish. The estimates show less than 2%
British Isles. Previous my origins did not pickup the Scandinavian (Swedish),
but the new estimate shows Finish. Hinteresting.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Italian & Portuguese people ONLY (or Greek)

2017-04-04 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores & Madeira)

For those who are half Italian and half Portuguese (I don't think I know of
anyone who is half Greek)

I want to know how the new Origins came out on you guys from FTDNA. Is it
saying you have a chunk of Iberian and a chunk of Southeast Europe? (Then
probably trace amounts). Or is it lopsided between your Italian and
Portuguese?

Yep, my dad mostly rolled over to Central Europe too. I'm aware of the
French and Flemish influence, but it doesn't seem like it should be that
high. I can't find the white paper on it either. Like I said, call them
ESTIMATES. Seems like they are going a step backward, into "cocktail party
conversation" instead of a step forward into science. I'll post the White
Paper when I find it or when it's released.

2017-04-04 Thread MaryAnn Santos
I don't think this is accurate - based on this new version I have
absolutely no Portuguese. I find that very hard to believe - both of my
parents were Portuguese. My mother's family from São Miguel, Açores goes
back to the late 1500s. My father is from Moimenta da Beira area of
Portugal. I can trace back only to the early 1800s.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Lucinda Pacheco (1884-1955)

2017-04-04 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
To add to all this confusion here is another Lucinda born 21 May 1883:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-RG-RIBEIRINHA-B-1880-1889/SMG-RG-RIBEIRINHA-B-1880-1889_item1/P142.html
This record was just a page before the record of Honero. I will note in all
three of the Lucinca’s there are no margin notes on the records.

Rick

Ok, back to the records again. Here is where I got the name Manuel Arruba for

Honerio Pacheco Averio (my uncle) It is the first line. Maybe you might come
up with a different name. This was on ancestry.

Use the shape of the word to help you.

Simao would have a tall letter at the beginning and then a rectangular box

Lucinda would be a longer word and have a chimney towards the end.
