Sean,

Manuel Matos Jorge O Barata, native of Sao Mateus, died 8 Sep 1747 at 62 yrs.
more or less.

I don't see his wife listed, but it's very difficult reading the record on the
tiny screen of my phone. So, I went to CITCEM to verify the name and date,
especially since there seemed to be a word before Barata that I couldn't get.
The database confirmed what I had written. The database lists the wife as Maria
Rosario. Maybe this info will help a little.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Mateus Obit

2017-06-06 Thread Sean Andrade
Hi,

I am having a very difficult time with this obit for Manuel Matues Jorge,
the second on the right page:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PIC-MD-SAOMATEUS-O-1733-1755/PIC-MD-SAOMATEUS-O-1733-1755_item1/P77.html

It is very faded and I am not seeing any names for his wife or children.

Is anyone able to read anything?

Hi!

I descend from Maria Joaquina de São Francisco married to Bartolomeu Correia
Picanço, 21.Nov. 1802, São Mateus, Praia, Graciosa.

I have not Antónia de Jesus de São Francisco and I would like to have the info
you may give me.

I may send you the information I have if you are interested in it.

Unfortunately I have not worked systematically my Graciosa ancestors… one day I
will.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree DNA Sale through Sunday, June 18, 11:59 pm CDT

2017-06-06 Thread Cheri Mello
Andrew,

Since you ordered a YDNA test for your grandfather, he's an existing
customer. If you ordered a YDNA on yourself, you'd be a new customer (and a
different person than your grandfather) so you would receive your own kit
number.

No, I would not order a YDNA test for yourself. It *should* be identical,
however, mutations are random events that happen. Since your grandfather is
the older generation, you want to work with his DNA. Wait until it comes in
and see if he has any good YDNA matches. FTDNA will have another sale at
the end of the year.

It looks like they are having a hard time with your grandfather's Family
Finder. It appears that they found a Y chromosome and are extracting that.
Both tests are within the given processing time, so you get to sit and wait.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree DNA Sale through Sunday, June 18, 11:59 pm CDT

2017-06-06 Thread Andrew Medeiros
Hello Cheri,

I wanted to find out from you if it is worthwhile ordering a Y-DNA test for
myself to help find out more about who my great-great grandfather was on my
paternal line. I already ordered an submitted a Y-DNA test on behalf of my
paternal grandfather to try to figure this out. Would having a Y-DNA test
for myself help to solve this mystery or no? Basically, I'm asking are two
paternal tests on the same line better than one?

If I do order a YDNA test, would I receive my own kit number?

Many thanks,
Andrew

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Why researching a whole freguesia is good idea

2017-06-06 Thread IslandRoutes

Thanks for posting a link to my article, Cheri!

I have been fortunate that a good portion of this line stayed in Maia for
many generations. So, you can imagine that the further you go back the
more you marry into families and the more people you collect.

It really wasn't until a cousin in Fall River, MA found me that I started
to collect most of the village. We had to do quite a bit of research to
figure out how her line that left in the 1890s and my line that left in
1882 were related. By the time we got done untangling it, we had
researched half the darn village. Now we know that we are 4th cousins,
once removed through 3 lines, and 6 cousins twice removed (once).

It's because of delving into the families that I've been able to find my
connections to Craig Mello (Nobel Prize winner), David Leite (chef and
cookbook writer/columnist), and Remigio Pereira (Canadian singer and
musician)--all with roots in Maia.

Finding the famous people is fun, but I feel because I've done so much
research in this one village, I have a little more sense of who they are,
their ancestry, and how my family fits in. Learning that I have cousins in
California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Canada, and
most likely Brasil (haven't explored that one yet) is pretty neat.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA Sale through Sunday, June 18, 11:59 pm CDT

2017-06-06 Thread Cheri Mello
(Cross posted to Azores, Madeira, and Island Routes lists)

Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) is having a 10 day sale in honor of Father's Day
(in America).

They have Y-DNA 37 on sale, Family Finder on sale, and a few combination
packages.

If you have tested with FTDNA and would like to add on a different type of
testing, log into the page with your kit number and password and look for
the blue UPGRADE button towards the upper right corner.

If you have never tested before (or convinced Uncle Joe to test), you'll
need to order a new kit. New orders are here:
Azores: https://goo.gl/vbzLM7
Madeira: https://goo.gl/MeUMak
Cape Verde: https://goo.gl/kwdGdS

If you'd like to test a non-Portuguese relative, go to the main site at
www.ftdna.com and the Search For A Surname box, type their surname or
region of the world that their line comes from.
