Celeste, Thank you so much for the information!
Wonderful that you have such a database. I believe a while back you mentioned
you had some SPRSI death records too?  I do have a suggestion (per your
question).  If you really are looking for a place to house it,  Kathy Cardoza

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] I.D.E.S. Fraternal Organization

2017-09-10 Thread 'celeste perry' via Azores Genealogy

The information I have about the files for the I.D.E.S. and the U.P.P.E.C. is
not current. Here is what I found during the time I was putting the U.P.P.E.C.
deceased members into a database.

I had a connection to the U.P.P.E.C. before they merged with the other
organizations that became P.F.S.A. At that time I asked the former Supreme
Secretary for the U.P.P.E.C. if I could have that years death records to add to
the information I had already put into the database. I was told I would have
to talk with the P.F.S.A. president. I did this and was told he would look
into it.

Long story short, I was denied the files. So.I gave the U.P.P.E.C. a copy
of the file that I had put together. They have not used the information when
someone has called them for information about a deceased relative they just
give the person my email address.

At the time I was putting together the information from U.P.P.E.C., I went to
the I.D.E.S. office (then in Hayward, CA).  I knew one of the workers there;
however, she told me that they had so many records and there was no easy way to
find the files. I was told they were in their basement and there was no order
to them.So.again, I was not given the opportunity to put the
information into a database that could have been used to locate information
about the deceased member.

I tried one more time to contact P.F.S.A. and was told it would be a violation
of confidentiality if they gave me the files I had not already copied.

Although the U.P.P.E.C. was founded in 1901, I was told the copies of the first
members were burned in a fire at the home of the Supreme President where they
were kept. The few early dates I found were in a book written by Joanne Vaz
about the society. Because the "original" Supreme Officers' information was
still available, some death dates were listed.

I know this does not sound helpful for you to find information using the
information that P.F.S.A. now has because they feel giving out the information
would be a breach of confidentiality. Really this attitude does not help any
of us doing research on our ancestors!

As I age, I am looking for someplace to leave the database I put together about
the U.P.P.E.C. members that died before 2010. If anyone has any idea where the
index can be "stored" to be used by family members to learn about things like
the birthplace of their ancestors, I am interested in hearing it.

It's just like Rosemarie said, and we entered (Damaged), ???, or (Not Given)
depending on why information in certain fields could not be deduced.
I can however tell you that one of these is likely the marriage of Manuel
Pereira Fagundes and a Cecelia Pereira. She was of Sao Sebastiao Terceira. If I
remember correctly they had a daughter Barbara in 1740.
It's confusing because there was also a Manuel Pereira Reis married to a
Cecelia Pereira at the same time in Calheta, and Rosemarie Capodicci and I are
descended from that couple.

The margin and record both say Clara. Compare his "o" to his "a." Also,
note how he writes "L" in ManueL and CLara - it's kinda capitalized. It's
definitely Clara.

Clara dos Anjos is the daughter of Dionisio de Souza Alvares and Ignes
Teixeira, both deceased.

Date is correct.

Groom and parents are from Nossa Senhora do Rosario, of Topo of this
island. They had Lent there. Bride and her parents are from the above named
Sao Tiago, where she was baptized and had Lent there.

Yep, like I said, SOME books are at someone's home, or somewhere at the

It kinda depends on locality. Some Catholic churches in California don't
have an IDES, SES, UPEC, etc, etc. affiliated with them. They just organize
a committee and plan their Espirito Santo. Note that I did say SOME.

Supposedly the IDES was to turn in their membership books to the Freitas
Library as all of the Fraternal organizations are now under one 'umbrella'.
As of the last 'talk' anyone had with the Freitas Library, the books were
not there or at least the person spoken to didn't really know where they
were!

Each parish church had an IDES group that planned the local Holy Ghost
celebrations. It was made up of members of the local fraternal group, UPEC
or others.

Yes, I know that the UPEC, IDES, etc, etc were different organizations. I
know SOME are on the Azores GenWeb, SOME are on Ancestry, SOME are on film,
and SOME may be in someone's home. So if yours aren't on the Azores GenWeb
or Ancestry, you will have to wait for the FHL to digitize their film and
it to become available at FamilySearch. Maybe they've digitized it by now.
There's no more film, so if they didn't digitize, they'll get to it in the
next 3 years or so. If they are in someone's home, you are out of luck.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Portuguese Military Records online

2017-09-10 Thread IslandRoutes
Kathy,
Thank you for posting this! I found my 4th great grandfather, Felicianno
de Mello listed.

I have a question about the place information. Is that birth or
residency? I ask because I found something more surprising. There are 3
entries for Jacinto Pacheco. All of them son of Joao Pacheco Grande. This
is the first entry:
https://ahm-germil.exercito.pt/details?id=358865&ht=pacheco%20grande

Everything about these entry matches my 2nd great grandfather except that
it says Furnas instead of Fenais d'Ajuda (his birth village). I don't know
how common the Pacheco Grande surname is. My 3rd great grandfather used it
as did some of his siblings (they also used Pacheco Ferreira). My family
used just Pacheco.

The reason I ask is my gr gr grandfather disappeared twice. The first time
is right after marriage. From 1756-1863 my gr gr grandparents are
missing. They married in his village (Ajuda) in 1756, then they reappear
in 1763 in her village, Achada to have what we believe is their second
child. I've checked FVC/Ajuda, Achada, Estrela (his maternal line is from
there) and find no trace.

The second time he goes missing is after my great grandfather, Theodoro, is
born. There are no other mentions of him in the 3 villages above, no obito.

So, now that I see these military entries, I wonder if this is my guy and
could he have been living in Furnas either in the gap after marriage or
after Theodoro was born.

Hi everyone, I'm attaching a file with a marriage record from São Matheus de
Calhetas (island of Terceira). The marriage starts at the bottom of the left
side and continues onto the top right. The groom is Manuel ? Serodio and so is
his dad. I was hoping to get the abbreviated part though because I am having a
hard time going further.
