Thank you Doug and Luiznoia for your quick answers.
I'll have a look at the CCA website.
Best regards,
Albert

No doubt Baleeiro (found in records also as Balieiro) came from being a
nickname, but it's also a real surname and usually from Graciosa.
For some proof of my assertion it's a surname I take for example one
Agueda Baleeiro of Velas from the 1500s, whom I have tentatively connected
to one Pedro Goncalves Baleeiro, but just a hunch. We don't find women
using such a name as her alcunha, so must be her chosen surname.
Searching for all instances of Baleeiro in my database, I did find a
Fernandes Baleeiro on Terceira in the 1600s.
I'm writing as my database is searching. Now I find I actually have a
Fernandes Baleeiro from Graciosa in the 1600s which could be the parents or
cousins of Alberto's ancestor.
OK, searching is done and I have 72 people by this surname from Graciosa,
Pico, Terceira, and Sao Jorge. I have none from any other islands, but that
means nothing because if they are not connected to Pico or Terceira or part
of a family that I have entered for some other reason, I simply skip them
and move onto a record that interests me. These named Baleeiro are from the
early 1500s to the 1800s, so it's an old name. Another woman was Catarina
Baleeiro.
I found many Fernandes Baleeiro from Graciosa, so have little doubt this
is Albert's ancestral connection. I know there are many Graciosa
researchers on this list and so a decent chance they will be willing to
share information.
I will give you one which you can keep in mind for the future once you
find out the other necessary details that you must have to progress in your
research.
Manuel Fernandes Baleeiro was a nobleman (Fidalgo da Casa Real) and native
of Santa Cruz on Graciosa Island. My note has him living in 1720 and I have
estimated he was born in about 1685. Since he was a noble, there will be
records from the King of Portugal and available from the Torre do Tombo is
Lisboa. His father by the same name was also a nobleman as was his
grandfather. Whether your family ties into this noble branch, who knows?
But you can have some fun tracing them.

I'm thinking it's likely a Jose or Joao etc, Fernandes, Baleeiro.
His alcunha or even occupation as a whaler.
You can find the Baleerio in Bahia records, but not until the 1890s.
Maybe some background on where the information came from would help here.

Hello Albert,
Fernandes is a surname. Maybe his name was Fernando?
Or maybe you are missing his given name and Fernandes Baleeiro is the
compound surname.
Your information about him coming from Graciosa matches what I know about
people named Baleeiro. They are found elsewhere in small numbers, so can
easily be found passing through Faial, Pico Terceira, Sao Jorge, etc.
No need to travel to Faial for research when they put those records
online this past year or so.
The government site is called CCA and it's quoted all the time, nearly
every day on this list. Look through past messages for the URL.
Unfortunately, your lack of more information is a huge barrier to making
further progress. I don't know this person. It seems to me you will have to
find him in Bahia records to learn who he married, and most of all the
names of his parents. Then you work back in time from there.

Dear all,
We are trying to find some information on a man named Fernandes Baleeiro
from Faial and Graciosa. As far as we know, he emigrated from Faial to
Bahia (Brazil) in 1726.
I'm aware that the information is scarce
