OK, let me explain more and give the count so far.

For the new people on the list, Rosemarie Capodicci and I have organized a
group of Azorean researchers and gone to Salt Lake City, Utah with them.  I
think we averaged 30 or 40 something of us.  

Most of us have to fly in.  So Monday evening is more of a meet and greet.
Tuesday we start the conference.  Part of it is held at the Plaza hotel and
part is next door at the Family History Library.  If you are brand new to
genealogy or don't yet have your island or freguesia (village), we have
classes and lectures on how to get started.  You would start on that track
and follow the classes all the way to the end.  These classes include topics
such as organization, where to look for vital records, censuses, city
directories, obits, and the naturalization process.  Then as the days go on,
we explain the organization of the records in the Azores, where to look, and
how to "read" them.  We reserve the computer lab for some classes for hands
on learning with the CCA site, the CITCEM (formerly NEPS), and online
newspaper databases.  For those that know their freguesia already, you would
pick the track that begins with the research over there and how to "read"
the records.  Every evening, Rosemarie and I are on the International floor
for guided research, where we will sit with you and help you "read" those
lovely records.

After hours, we have taken over the Plaza's library and talked the night
away, commandeered the television and watched "Who Do You Think You Are?"
together, and took over the lobby and talked and talked.  It's a lot of fun.

The Plaza Hotel (our host hotel) runs some "Genealogy Free Night Specials."
These are around slow times (winter and holidays).  There is one around
Easter 2014 and that's the "stay 3 nights and get the 4th free" with the
room being $85 plus taxes.  Otherwise, we are just offered an $85 a night
group rate (regular is $129 a night).

Our choices and the count:
Arriving Monday, April 7 (for the out of town people) with the conference
being Tuesday, April 15 - Friday, April 11 (just the group rate of $85 a
night): 3 people

Week before Easter Sunday (Holy Week):

Arriving Monday, April 14 (for out of town) with the conference being
Tuesday April 15 - Friday April 18 (stay 3 and get the 4th free): 2 people
preferred this.

6 people said either week would work.  And 3 or 4 people discussed how to
get there, but did not note a preference for which week.

If anyone else wants to chime in here, please do.  Otherwise, I may just
flip a coin in a couple of days here and pick a week.

Gail,

Look at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery in Hayward, California.  My
grandmother Aldina Silveria Leal Facha was buried there in 1931.  She too
lived in the Brooklyn Township at the time of her death.

The secretary was very helpful when I wrote for information.  I think this
is a large Portuguese cemetery for the county of Alameda as I have several

Aloha to all,

 

I need some advice on how to proceed.  Mary Dias is my grandfather's sister
and I have been trying to find out where there are buried but right now I've
hit a road block.

Mary (deSouza) Dias was born around 1883, in Wainaku HI and married Joseph
Dias who was born around 1874 in Portugal.  The last known census I found
them in was in 1930 in Brooklyn Township in Alameda County California.  They
had a daughter named Annie Dias who I found living with her sister Mary &
Joseph Correia in the 1940 census in San Leandro.  From family members they
were both dead by 1941 as they can remember.  Assuming they died between
1930 and 1940 I tried ordering death certificates for that time period and
they found none. I have searched on ancestry for any census, obituaries and
death index and can't find anything.  Do any of you have suggestions as to
where I should go from here?
