My great grandfather was Jose Pereira Escobar, and changed his name to
Joseph (Joe) Perry when he got to the States. I don't have any info on his
siblings or parents - just know he came from Faial Azores in 1879 and lived
in Monterey, California for the last 26 years of his life. He had 10
children but I only know of 6. His wife was Maria Bettencourt changed to
Mary Perry in the US.

  Barbara,

In America, the Customs Passenger Lists cover the period from about
1820-1890 (Immigration Passenger Lists cover the period from about 1890-1954).

In Michael Tepper's "American Passenger Arrival Records," at the end of
the chapter titled "Customs Passenger Lists" (it's Chapter 3 in my book,
published 1993), it lists the ports and years covered, as well was what exists
and what's missing. For example, it says that Boston has copies or abstracts
covering 22 Sep 1820- 31 Mar 1874 (gaps) M277. M277 is the National Archive
roll number. That film is indexed in M334. It also mentions that 1848-1891
(State Lists) are indexed in M265. Other east coast ports (up in New England)
are Baltimore, MD; Bristol & Warren, RI; Edgartown, MA; Fall River, MA;
Nantucket, MA; New Bedford, MA; New Haven, CT; Newport, RI; New York, NY (this
is Castle Garden; Ellis Island was NOT in existence); and Providence, RI.
You'll have to go to your public library to check for the details on these
ports.

You can search Castle Garden: http://www.castlegarden.org/
I also googled: ships 1859 and came up with this. Don't know how good it
is though.

You can search Ancestry too. I don't believe they have every port
though. If you don't have a subscription, your local public library or FHC has
a subscription.

Nancy,

When I first saw your email I thought, at last someone who knows about Joseph
Victorino (Vitorino Jose)! But I guess it was a different one. From what I
could find the one I am looking for was born Feb 25, 1832 in Angústias, Horta,
Faial, Azores. His father was Vitorino Jose dos Reis and mother was Mariana
Luisa Candida. He did settle in New Bedford. But my relatives say it was New
Bedford, New Jersey. I haven't verified that yet. He supposedly came over to
America with his older brother, Antonio Victorino in 1859.

For years I've tried to find my great grandfather, Jose Enos Vetorino, he
used many names in his records in New Bedford.he said his father's name was
Thome Oliveira...he also said Vieira, Enos and Bettencourt...the constant was
his mothers name, Anna Joaquina and that he was born in Sao Jorge in
1863I've searched all villages for 1863 and never saw him.the Horta
passports opened the door for me once again.

I found him, Jose Ignacio Victorino. I need some help identifying the ship he

"Nol?"...I'd like to find him on a ships listthe passports gave his village
as Santo Amaro, Sao Jorge. I found his baptism.he was born in 1862His
father is Thome de Oliveira and his mother, Anna Joaquinna de Betencurt!

Thank you for any help with the ship name.

2015-02-10 Thread Barbara Mecklenburg
Cheri,

I have looked at the passports and found my gr gr gr grandfather, Antonio
Victorino in Horta in March 7, 1859. I am now trying to find his arrival in
America. It looks like the ship is Asor and he arrived in (I think) Boston from
family records. But supposedly his brother Joseph (VItorino Jose) arrived with
him and I can't find him. So do you know if there is a passenger list for the
ship Asor landing in America in 1859? This is the url for the passport I found:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1856-1859/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1856-1859_item1/P60.html
Antonio Victorino is the last entry on the page.

Thanks for any help!

The 3 ports for the Azores are Ponta Delgada (on Sao Miguel), Angra, and

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Ships

2015-02-09 Thread Barbara Mecklenburg
Is there a list somewhere of the ships from the Azores to America in 1859? And
if so is there a list of passengers on the ships?

  Al,

  Outbound or inbound?

Outbound: I believe Horta is the nearest port to Flores. Your ancestor
probably registered in Horta (although, if he wanted to get to America on the
next boat, he could have made his way over to Angra on Terceira or Ponta
Delgada on Sao Miguel). Horta is not online at the CCA. You'd have to hire
Joao Ventura, the archivist to get it for you (heroi99 at yahoo.com).

Inbound: You'll have to check the port of New Bedford as well as the port of
New York (the ship may have sailed to New York first and your ancestor may be
counted there. Then the boat when on to New Bedford where he got off. Or the
captain may have had the New York people counted in New York and the New
Bedford people counted in New Bedford). I'm not sure what lists exist for 1884
in America. The port in New York was called Castle Garden in 1884:
http://www.castlegarden.org/ As for New Bedford, Michael Tepper's American
Passegner Arrival Records, list this in Table 1 (at the back of Chapter 3):
New Bedford, Ma:  Originals 1823-1899; Copies or Abstracts: 1826-1852 (gaps);
State Dept. Transcripts: 1822, 1825-1827, 1830-1831. There's a footnote: The
Archives has an unmicrofilmed card index for New Bedford, 1875-1899. Tepper's
book was written in 1993, so something may have been done with that index by
now. By Archives, Tepper means the National Archive and Record Administration
(NARA).

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name change

2015-02-06 Thread Barbara Mecklenburg
Eddie,

I have a great grandfather who was Jose (or Joseph) Azevedo Machado. He was
born Feb. 25, 1871 in Calheta, Sao Jorge island, Azores and died Nov. 5, 1944
in Gustine, Merced County, California, USA. He had an older brother named
Manuel Azevedo Machado who also lived in Gustine. I couldn't find any Borbas in
his relatives, just Silveirias and Texeiras. Do you think there might be a
connection?

  Hi,

I have been researching my paternal side of my family "Machado" or in the
Azores d'Azevedo Machado. I have found all the birth records for my great
grandfather and his brothers and I have found 5 of the 9 in the united states.
I have run into on the obit for my 2x great grandmother Maria Borba in 1913
that two of the sons may have taken either their mothers last name or their
step fathers last name which in this case is the same "Borba". On another
brother's obit in 1930 for Anton Machado it lists one of the brothers again as
"Borba", but when I get to the final brother to pass Michael Machado the obit
it lists the two brothers that were previously labeled "Borba" now as Machado.
I have attached each of those obits to this post. In this case it is
Jose/Joseph Borba/Machado and John Borba/Machado. How common is this? Makes it
difficult to find people I must say.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Fw: help with interpretation of writing

2015-02-03 Thread Barbara Mecklenburg
I also could not make out the name of the ship either. His brother Joseph was
supposed to have traveled with him along with 18 other Portugese men to New
Bedford, New Jersey. Then Antonio went on around the Horn to Monerey, CA and
settled in Point Lobos, CA as a whaler. Joseph stayed in New Bedford. (If
anyone knows him I would love to learn more about him also)

Hi Barbara,
I really can't be of much help.
When, I visited Faial, three years ago, I met an Escbar family, that runs a
small mercado there.
The owner told me that her husband's, Escobar family owns a farm in
Portsmouth, R.I.

Good luck

[AZORES-Genealogy] Jose Pereira Escobar and wife Maria

2014-08-27 Thread Barbara Mecklenburg
I am new to this group. I have been looking for ancestors of my paternal great
grandparents, Joe and Mary Perry of Monterey, California, and I have come to a
dead end on info. Without their parents names and the village that they are
from I can't find any info on their origins or ancestors in the Azores.
Hopefully someone in this group is related or knows of someone who is. Here is
the info I have so far from family bibles, photos, death certificates and the
help of Rosemarie with the obits. and death record from the UPEC.

Americanized name: Joe Perry

Portuguese Name: Jose Pereira Escobar from Fayal, Azores

born Jan. 15, 1842 in Fayal?

died Jan 25, 1933 in Monterey, California

He may have had a brother or father or both named Antone Perry (probably
Pereira). One was mentioned in his obit. and the other on his death certificate
with unknown mother.

He lived in the peninsula area in California for 26 years and in the USA for 55
or 65 years (depending on what record you go by), so it is possible that he
first arrived on the East Coast. He sent for his wife after he was established
in California. I suspect it was an arranged marriage and they did not marry
till she arrived in California around 1885, because she was 18 years younger
than him and he arrived in the states when she was only 8 years old. The story
we were told when we were young was that he worked his way over from the Azores
to the States in a cattle boat. (I have no documentation of this.) He owned
their home in Monterey at 198 Park Avenue and had cattle and was well know in
Monterey. When he was young he had red hair and the story in the family goes
that his father beat him because he had red hair instead of black.

Americanized name: Mary Perry

Portuguese Name: Maria Margaret (Bettencourt) Escobar

born Sept. 18, 1860 in Azores or Portugal

died Oct. 22, 1948 in Monterey, California

I have seen her maiden name spelled Bitcart, Bitencurt, Betencourt, or
Bettencourt. Her obituary said that she was a resident of the Peninsula for 50
years and her death certificate said she lived in the country for 50 years. Her
death certificate has her father as Mr. Bitcart and unknown mother. I have
photos of both her and her husband but the only other info I have is from
Ancestry.com that they lived in Monterey.

They had 6 children:

1. Joseph Stanley Perry - b. Sept 8, 1889 in Coyote, California (south of San
Jose and north of Morgan Hill) He died Apr. 6, 1964 in King City, California.
He married Clara Evelyn Machado. He was my grandfather.

2. Anthony Thomas Perry - b. Aug 1, 1991 in Gilroy, California and died Dec 3,
1949 in Monterey, California. He married Catherine Marcella Grimes.

3. Manuel Joseph Perry - b. June 5, 1894 in Los Osos, California and died Dec
22, 1968 in San Luis Obispo, California. He married Mary Olivia Gularte.

4. Florence (Flora) M. Perry - b. Apr 8, 1900 in (probably Monterey),
California and died Sept 17, 1994 in Gustine, California. She was married to
Joe S. Silva.

5. Stella M Perry - b. Sept 5, 1903 in (probably Monterey), California and died
June 14, 1973 in San Francisco, California. She was married to James Augusta
Seyferth.

6. Frances Perry - b. about 1907 in Monterey, California and died sometime
after 1948 probably in San Francisco, California. She was married to Richard
O'Connor.

I hope someone out there is related and can give me some more info to go on.

Thanks everyone!

Barbara Mecklenburg

I've enjoyed the thread about Hawaii, Massachusetts or Brazil. Does anyone
know the background of the migration to California. There was a large
concentration of Portuguese in Newcastle, CA where I grew up. Family tradition
says that my great-grandmother came from Flores in the early 1880's because her
parents had died and something happened on the island and many people were
leaving. Other relatives came from Pico and Faial in the 1880's and 90's.
Does anyone have background on how and why they came to California instead of
the east coast?
  Thank you,
  Diane
