Hi Shirley,
How did you make out with this family? Francisco Brandao de Teve is my 9th

Also, Bartolomeo Rodrigues de Sintra had a sister Maria Sintra that was
married to ~Francisco Raposo Pimentel. They had a son Bras Raposo Pimentel
that
married Apolonia Brandao de Teve, sister of the above Francisco Brandao de

Apolonia and Bras are my 9th great grandparents. If I can help you any

"Prince Henry the Navigator, A Life". You can find it in soft cover at
Amazon. It's 400 pages long and I'm at page 95 so I can't comment about how
good a
read it will be, but...I'm learning a lot about Madeira right now that
might be of interest to people in your group who can trace their heritage to
that island. For example, many of the original settlers there in the 15th
century came specifically from lands owned or under the control of Henry,
around
Viseu, north central and eastern Portugal. Also, anyone who has a surname
derived from Tristao Vaz Texeira might benefit from knowing he died in 1470,
leaving four sons and eight daughters behind. The book is full of such details
and the index has 25 pages containing an extensive list of sources, at least
300. In my experience, it's not that often you get that many historical
documents in one book."

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Search needs Portuguese Translators

2010-02-20 Thread Denise1270
I arbitrate for the Brazilian records. The handwriting is often tricky
and the main problem I see is that people don't read the project directions
before they start transcribing. The records are in Portuguese, doesn't
matter that it's from Brazil. You can take a look at a sample before
committing to it, but even then there are no obligations to index.

Family Search need volunteers to transcribe some Brazilian records.
Although this list is Azores focused, some of our Azorean ancestors or their
siblings went to Brazil.

Sam,
Exactly as Cheri said. If you can read it, you can probably work on this
project. The handwriting is not too bad it's more that they are completely
handwritten so you need a pretty good knowledge of how to extract the
right information.

I think the biggest difference in Brazilian vs. continential Portuguese is
the pronunciation more than anything else. Just like American English vs.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: mtDNA match in the Azores DNA Project!!!

2008-10-08 Thread Denise1270
Hi Cheri,

I checked the passenger list for Conceicao C Silva (her name comes up on
Ancestry as Conccicao), Conceicao lists her mother as Ana Cabral Amor Divino of
Nordeste and is on the 1st page of the manifest. There are two passengers with
her: Maria C Lima and Maria Lima (child). Maria C Lima lists her nearest
relative as her mother-in-law Rosa Lima. My thought is that if Maria C Lima's
mother was the same Ana Cabral listed by Conceicao, wouldn't she have used that
as her nearest relative opposed to her mother-in-law? Of course it's possible
Ana was her mother and maybe she was living with the in-laws and so chose to
list her instead.
Page 2 lists Conceicao as going to meet her husband Manuel Duarte Silva in
Swansea, MA and Maria C Lima is listed as going to meet her husband Maximiano C
Lima in New Bedford, MA. Both woman said they were from Feteira.
Hope that helps a bit.

There's a perfect match with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the Azores DNA
Project (housed at Family Tree DNA!)

Nicole Rodriques' dad's mtDNA came in. It matched another man's mtDNA who has
been sitting around 3.5 years waiting for a match. (Remember, both males and
females inherit their mtDNA from their mothers, although only the female
daughters can pass it down). They have a total of 13 mutations or differences
or polymorphisms (for those with technical minds).. Eleven of them are in the
top 50 most common mutations. Although the other are two mutations are less
common, they are not rare :( Nicole is stuck with her great-grandmother born
in 1884 in Achada (in the neighborhood called Feteira Grande). The other
gentleman had his lineage traced by George Pacheco to 1650 in Nordestinho.
Geographically, they are very close.

I was able to find this for Nicole from the CCA web site.
Passaportes for Ponta Delgada, 1911-1912, image 1051, registered Aug. 31, 1911,
passenger-passaporte number 1160-1989:
Conceicao Cabral de Silva, daughter of Jose Ignacio de Medeiros and Maria de
Conceicao, married, age 27, council of Nordeste, freguesia of Achada, domestic,
cannot read, going to America.

A couple of lines above is a Maria Cabral de Lima, daughter of Jose de Medeiros
and Anna Cabral, married, age 24, council of Nordeste, freguesia of Achada, etc
(same as above).

When Elaine Sharp found this Conceicao C. Silva coming into America, to Boston
(ship left Sept. 1 and arrived Sept. 7, 1911) she said the the American arrival
record listed Conceicao's nearest relative as Anna Cabral, mother. Elaine, can
you double check that? I don't have that part to my Ancestry subscription. I
have two thoughts in my mind (I shared one with Nicole and the other one just
dawned on me). I know the American ones are on two pages and if Conceicao and
Maria Cabral de Lima came off the boat together, perhaps you misread the entry
all the way across the page onto the second side. The other idea is that since
these two women are both from Achada they may have the same father but
different mothers. One mother died and Jose remarried the mother of the other.
Although the other woman is not her biological mother, Conceicao may have said
that her step-mother is her nearest relative to the American government
officials. Then again someone could have just plain old written something
incorrectly.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Brooke Burke on "Dancing with the Stars" ancestry is listed online as
French/Irish paternal and Portuguese/Irish maternal. Is anyone aware of her
Portuguese heritage? She was born in Hartford CT.

The P.A.H.R has actress Vanessa (Barrigas) Marcil as having a Portuguese
father; her father is Mexican her real name is Sally Vanessa Ortiz. I wonder
where they compile their information from. There used to be a man on a soap
opera named Scott De Freitas. I live in Westchester County NY and we have a
radio station here with Mary Da Silva as a DJ.
