[AZORES-Genealogy] Email troubles

2011-08-13 Thread Marek Delacroix
My email, marekdelacr...@yahoo.com has been seriously hacked, hi-jacked, or
whatever the term is.  I have done all that Yahoo has told me to do and still
am having problems.  I just want to say that I am sorry for any problems that
this unfortunate event caused  any of you...It wasn't an intentional act on my
part.

Yes, I used Pimsleur to improve my Spanish skills and thought it was

I've tried several different programs and thought it was the best.

I used Pimselur CD's for Brazilian Portuguese and liked the approach. I know
others who swear by this method as well. I could listen to one or two lessons
per day on my commute to work, which encouraged me to stick with it through the
entire set of CDs.

Judy G,

You would have to define what you mean by a Portuguese club. There are several
Portuguese halls in CA and a couple in NV, ID, and HI (for the west coast). If
you are looking for a Portuguese genealogy club, there's one in Taunton, MA and
Honolulu, HI. That's it.

We mention Ellis Island from time to time. Perhaps not as recently.

Marek,

I beleive Braio would be surname in Flores records. It's likely of Italian
origin.

The 1850 census shows a Joseph Francis , a mariner in Nantucket, 18 years old,
born in Flores, there is also a Francis Joseph 17 years from Flores

[AZORES-Genealogy] Manuel or Joao?

2010-07-23 Thread Marek Delacroix
My great great grandmother is Felizarda Rosa Coracao Jesus, born Feb. 14, 1829
in Piedade, Pico.  She married Joao de Avila Brazil  (May 6, 1853) and they
settled in Calheta, Sao Jorge where Joao was from.

The problem I have is that I have two different names for Felizardas father.
One is, Manuel da Silva  the other is Joao Goncalves Silva.  One name came from
a church record, the other from Historical notes. The dates I have for her
father are 1781-1863.
Felizardas mother is Maria Rita Jacinta 1780-1858.  Her marriage took place on
Jan. 16, 1811 in Piedade, Pico.  Does anyone have any insight to this??
Thanks!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Baptismal Record Interpretation of Ursula Joaquina -Nossa Senhora do Rosario, Lajes de Flores, Flores

2010-07-09 Thread Marek Delacroix
Boy that is a tough one to read!  But, what caught my eye, is Barojo...my
family
came from Flores and here in the states their surname became Brio...I have been
trying to figure them out for years now...anyway, I was wondering if maybe Brio
was once Barojo???  My ancestors are Jose Francisco Brio and Amelia Candida
Enos.  They eventually ended up in Hawkinsville, Siskiyou County, Calif as gold
miners.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Baptismal Record Interpretation of Ursula Joaquina
-Nossa Senhora do Rosario, Lajes de Flores, Flores

I am trying to glean some more information off of this baptismal record of one
of my ancestors. Her name is Ursula Joaquina, born 4 Mar 1798 in Lajes de
Flores, Flores. Her mother's name is Izabel and the father is unknown. It
appears the maternal grandparents are Francisco Pel (probably Pimentel) and
Maria Pimentel. I have not been able to find the marriage record for Francisco
and Maria  and hope that this record might give more clues. I am also
interested
in the name of the Padrinhos because I have seen one of the surnames (Baiojo or
Barojo) before but can't make it out. It isays Forao Padrinhos Antonio Pimentel
*Barojo*...I am not sure on this name if I wrote it correctly as I am
unfamiliar
with it. Maybe someone can help with it.

Thanks,

 David

Now my head is REALLY spinning!! but I jest of courseIf it were easy I

In answer to your question Nancy, Yes I have researched the de Costa, da
Costa,(both of which I have in my line) but wow there is so MANY Manuel de
Costa.
And the odd thing about your question of my spelling GALANTE or could it be
Goularte, for a long time I thought it was Goularte. But then My ggg
granmother's mother's name listed on california death index was Galante.
then ms. Shirley provided me with info that seems to verify his name to be
Galante.

Hello all. I hope everyone had a great, lovefilled Easter.

I am requesting some fresh ideas on a possible surname change of one of my
ancestors.

My ggg grandmother's brother, Manuel da Costa Galante, from Lagoa, N.S.
immigrated with his new bride to Hawaii in 1884 upon the ALBERGELDIE(think
thats right). His passport along with information from a book Ms. Shirley has
stated his whole name as that which is above.
Now my problem is I have searched all the subsequent census records up to 1910
in Hawaii, and I can not find any one with that last name, Galante. Does anyone
have any ideas of an alternative spelling of the last name, or maybe if it
would be usual for one to drop the last name and just go by da Costa??
Any suggestions and / or ideas would be appreciated.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Angel Island, Calif

2010-04-01 Thread Marek Delacroix

Cheri...I am at a stand still trying to figure out where my great great
grandparents (maternal) came from.  I know that my gg grandpa was born on
Flores..(says so on his grave marker)..no idea about his wife.  But,  my family
all came from Azores to mine for gold and ended-up in Siskiyou County, CA where
they did operate a mining claim or two.  I know that my great grandfather's
brother was shipwrecked near Seattle, Washington (Joao de Avila Brasil) on his
way to America and that he spent a few months on an island around Seattle with
the natives.  So I am beginning to wonder if perhaps my family came through
Angel Island near San Francisco.
Also, My gg grandmother's family just seem to have dropped off the face of the
earth.  I know she had a brother who registered for WWI...other than that there
are no indications of what happened to any of them, no marriage records, birth
or death records can be found.  Also the name has proved to be very difficult
BRIO  which apparently is Italian, it could have been Brito which apparently
there are a few on Flores...I haven't been able to find Flores records.  Thanks
for all the help...Marek

Marek,

Looks like there is an immigration port there.

Check the LDS catalog to see what was filmed.  The bigger ports for Azoreans
were on the east coast (Providence, Boston, New Bedford, New York) and then to
HI and I think somewhat to San Francisco.  But I've heard of a couple of
stories where they did come in through a lesser known port.

Good morning all. I am hoping someone here will be able to answer this
question for me, as it is pertains to 4 of my 9 living children.

What Percentage of people of Portuguese ethnicity is RH -? I have just found
out, due to the pregnancy of my daughter that she is RH- and due to her
father's ethnicity, is very doubtful that negative factor came from his
genetics.

While I am on the subject, I suppose I ought to explain a little more.  I have
9 living children, 7 girls, 2 boys. I have been married twice, and from the
first union, I had 2 girls, one of which is o- rh factor; I lived with a man
and had one female child with him, whom is also rh - (a-), and then married my
current husband and we had 6 more children, 2 of which (girls) are also rh-(
one isO- one is A-).
My mother is Swedish, scottish, indian and my father is full blooded portuguese.
my mother blood type is O + , my fathers blood type is A+, and mine is A+.

from the  research I have done,it is extremely rare for native american, black,
and scottish peoples to carry the rh negative factor, but a race of people
called BASQUES have a very high rate of rh negative blood. Is the Portuguese
race considered Basque? and What is the ratio of negative blood type in the
Portuguese Race?
Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

It's not a Portuguese Restaurant, it's run by the same  Portuguees American
family that opened it  in 1894,  and I've never met anyone who's eaten there
that didn't love it.

Their specialties are the Cream of artichoke soup made from the artichoke they
grow, the cioppino, with the portuguese touch of cumin in the broth, and the
ollalieberry pie.

Don't know where people get the idea it's a Portuguese restaurant.

Hi,
This is a request for the name of the Portuguese restaurant in the coastal
California area mentioned numerous times on this list.  I'm staying in
Watsonville.  This is a little off topic, but members of this list have made
it sound great! and I happen to be in the area and would like to try it.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give. -Donna

I like your new name.  It could be because I had a great grandmother, Anna
Felizarda de Vasconcellos born on Flores. That was both her maiden name and her
married name because she was married to her first cousin, my great grandfather,

   Yes, it's a devotional name.
Maria do Corpo de Deus de Costa
Maria do Corpo de Deus = Mary of the Body of God
de Costa = the real family surname

Portuguese de = Spanish, French de = Dutch van = German von

Devotional surnames were not originally family surnames, but later they
   can
   become one.

Maria de Sao Jose = Mary of Saint Joseph
Maria do Nascimento = Mary of the Birth (of Jesus)
Maria da Conceicao = Mary of the Conception
Maria da Luz = Mary of the Light (after Our Lady of the Light)

Along XVIIIth Century, almost all women have devotional instead of
   familiar
surnames. You will find lots and lots of Maria de Jesus, Maria da
   Conceicao,
Maria do Rosario, Maria de Sao Pedro, Maria da Piedade, etc. Sometimes
   these
surnames refered to birth's date saints: children born or baptized near
Christmas could be named do Nascimento; near Saint Joseph's day, de
   Sao
Jose, etc., but it's not a rigid rule. Combined with family surnames:
   Maria
da Luz Pereira or Maria Pereira da Luz. Sometimes these combos go on  and
become a family name: Pereira das Neves, Pereira da Luz, Silveira do
Nascimento. Other devotional surnames came from saints' epithets, like
   Joao
Batista (John the Baptizer), Joao Evangelista (John the Evangelist),
Francisco Xavier, Francisco de Assis, applied to a single person, who
   passed
to its descendants. In Vila do Topo, there was a Joao Batista de Santana
   who
become the origin of a vast family Batista.

Thank you for the info...I will have to check it out and see if that is her.
Yes...they do still celebrate Holy Ghost Festival there in Hawkinsville...every
year it is smaller and smaller as the old timers pass on.  My dad use to be a
big part of it until he passed in 1986.  Marek

Hi Marek,

The Siskiyou County Library Home page has a link to Obituary index.  There is
an obit in the Siskiyou News 6/10/1915 for Amelia Francis.  Perhaps you could
contact them, or request a copy from SKS on Siskiyou Message Board

Siskiyou County Library; 719 4th St. Yreka, California 96097  (530)
841-4175 -- siskiyoulibr...@snowcrest.net.
Siskiyou County has many good genealogical resources, and the county office
staff is very helpful.

The Siskiyou Pioneer and Yearbook, a publication of the Siskiyou County
Historical Society has a Hawkinsville Edition, 2004.  In it a paragraph
describes the 1905 Great Feast of the Holy Ghost.  A Flower Girl in the
procession is an Olivia Francis.   In 1919, Frank Francis is on the committee
of the I.D.E.S. sponsored celebration.  I understand the Penecost celebration
continues today in Hawkinsville.  Good luck with your search.

My great great grandfather was Joseph Francis Brio,  more likely, Jose
Francisco, last name could be spelled Brejo. I have also seen his last name as
Braio.  He was born on Flores, Azore Islands 1835.  Came to America in 1854,
was granted citizenship papers in Boston, Mass on April 24, 1854.  He married a
woman named Amelia, nothing else known about her.  I have heard her maiden name
could have been Brio, and Joseph's surname could have been Francis. They
ended-up in Yreka, Siskiyou County CA. Both are buried at St. Joseph Catholic
Cemetery in Yreka, CA.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also...I was reading the census from Yreka, Siskiyou county, CA.  And it
states someone was born in Ireland...help appreciated!!

I, too, have Pereiras and Teixeiras in my line. Both from Norte Grande

Siskiyou County -
Germana was born on the island of Pico, Azores and was raised on the island of
Faial, Azores. On Nov. 10, 1956, she married Joao Furtado and returned to the
island of Pico. There she raised her three children, Germana, Maria and Joao.
On Nov. 13, 1968, she immigrated to the U.S. with her family, and worked hard
to provide a better life for them.
She loved to attend church functions, dance, vacation on the beach in Half Moon
Bay, spend time with her grand-children and great-grandchildren teaching them
to crochet and knit, being surrounded by family and friends, passing on
traditional Portuguese customs, like making Portuguese doughnuts, sweetbread,
flat corn bread, traditional dances, and sharing her childhood experiences, and
adventures. She taught us the importance of love, respect, family and a good
laugh. In her last days, she expressed she wanted to dance with her husband
again.
On July 21, 2009, Germana went home to be with our Lord. She is survived by
three children, eight grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother: May you dance on the streets of gold
with your one true love until we see each other again. With all our love, Your
Family.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Manuel Baptist

2009-05-09 Thread Marek Delacroix
I am a blood decendent of Manuel De Avila Brazil, therefore I am researching
that line.  All I know is that Manuel Brazil married Rosalina and she is the
daughter of Manuel Baptist and Maria Perpetua, I don't know if this is the
Baptists that you are researching, they were from Topo.  I am only covering the
fringes of Manuel Brazil because he is the brother of my great grand father
Antonio De Avila Brazil and there are interesting stories about their arrival
here in Siskiyou County CA.  I know that Manuel Brazil  (who may be married to
your Manuel's daughter)  Came to CA and mined for gold and went back to Sao
Jorge and married, he had done very well mining for gold.  He eventually went
blind and stayed on the island not returning to CA.

This is from a book that mentions the De Avila Brazil family..sorry its in

depois à esquina, lado esquerdo da canada que leva ao forte de Santo Espírito;
casa legada a sua esposa por sua tia Ana Perpétua, por largos anos merceeira
nesta vila, e casada com Jose António da Silva Regalo.

Maybe you can get something out of this.

I've been wondering if there were any descendents of Jose and Agada's 3 living

Do you have a Manuel Correia Brazil, born  1893, died 1955 in California.
Father was Frank Brazil and mother mary Clementino.
Manuel C. Brazil married my beloved grandmother, Amelia Nascimento and was from
near Calheta, Sao Jorge.

I do not have a birthdate for Manuel Baptist.  What I do know is that their
daughter Rosalina was 33 years old when she married my decendent Manuel Brazil,
so in 1897 Rosalina was 33 years old so she was born in 1864, if Rosalina was
born when Manuel was 30 years old then he would have been born in 1834, or if
he was 20 when she was born he would have been born in 1844...I just don't know
the exact date but I will work on it...Manuel Brazil is the brother of my great
grandfather Antonio De Avila Brazil.  The were from Calheta Sao Jorge and also
Piedade, Pico (lot of island hopping)

Yes, Marcio and I share Manuel De Valenca in our family tree.  I can tell you a
few things about Manuel Brazil, but it is Manuel Baptist that you are
interested in?  All I know is that my Manuel married the daughter of your
Manuel.

I have a Manuel Baptist as a decendent, his wife was Perpetual and they had a
daughter named Rosalina.  They were from Santo Antão do Topo.  Rosalina married
Manuel De Avila Brasil (Brazil) a decendent of mine, on Jan. 11, 1897.  I don't
know if there is a connection, but for what its worth.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Goncalves Ferreira - Sao Jorge

2009-05-04 Thread Marek Delacroix
Researching Domingos Goncalves (died before 1658) and his wife Ana
Ferreira...both, most likely, from Calheta, Sao Jorge.  Their son is Antonio
Goncalves Ferreira who married Barbara Vieira on Nov.25, 1658 in
Calheta, Sao Jorge.

Also, I have noticed that it seems that families would have a child named, say
Manuel, then perhaps that child died young and the parents would have another
child and name him Manuel alsoI have noted this a few times in my
research...was this a common practice or are they mistakes?

Hello all,

I was on the Univerity of Minho website (Pico link) today and noticed
there have been updates to both sides of my grandparents. As well, my
maternal grandmother is not even listed as my grandfather's wife
anymore. I was wondering if anyone knew where they group had
originally got the information to plug into the site - I thought they
had gotten it from church records.

HelloMy Jose Francisco ( Joseph Francis) was born in 1832 and came to the
USA in 1854 granted citizenship on April 24, 1854 in Boston, MA.  I know that

Hi, My ggrandfather went by the name of Manuel Jerome Francis and he was
from the island of Flores but they started in Fayal. He had two brothers
Jose and Joao which would be Joseph and John in this country. Joseph was
born in 1854 in Flores. They were mariners and Manuel settled in Stonington,
CT. and the last we knew the others were in WWorchester, Ma.  Henrietta
Maybe there  is a connection

Maybe Brio was her maiden name?  My grandmother kept her maiden name
of DaCosta until she came to the US where they gave her my
grandfathers name of Vargas.  Hope this helps!

I found a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1832 who came to the US June 25, 1852
on the schooner Waldron Holmes sailing from Fayal to Boston. It says
he is a mariner. There is also a Manuel Francis on this ship.

There is a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1832 also on the schooner Abby
Forest who came to the US August 1854, seaman, sailing from the Azores
to Boston. Actually there are 2 Joseph Francis on this ship but he is
  6 years older.

There is a Joseph Francis b. abt 1832 on the Bark Halifax, September
1859, sailing from Halifax to Boston, mariner, b. in Portugal

Looks like it might be the same person going back and forth a couple
of times. Could be him. My grandfather also came through Halifax
once when he sold one of his ship's overseas and was returning home so
  don't let that throw you.

In the 1860 census, there is a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1831, Fayal ,
mariner, living on Nantucket Island. (There is something written
after his name but I do not know what it means). There is also a John
and Angelica Francis from Fayal living 3 doors down.

There's a Joseph Francis b. abt. 1833 living in Calaveras County CA.

There's another Joseph Francis b. abt. 1832, mariner, living in
Boston, but he is married with a child.

In 1870 census, your Joseph Francis with wife Amelia are living in
Yreka, CA both b. Western Island with children Mary 4, b. CA, Joseph
1, b. CA so Amelia must have come to the US before 1871. Living with
them is a Joseph Silva 30 also a miner b. Western Islands.

  Hope this helps.

FRANCIS  could have originally been Francisco which is normally a first name
but can be a surname. BRIO has me stumped. There is a surname Brindeiro on
Flores but it is rather unlikely (but not impossible) that it would have been
shortened to Brio. I'll have to think about that some more.
