Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores trip in May

2013-04-02 Thread Nancy Hoopes
I am also going May to Ponta Delgada, my husband and I, only for a week (my
second time). Want to go back to Nordestinho, Bretanha, Mosterios, and see
more.
Seems I am related to nearly everyone according to the Nobiliario de Familias
Portuguesas (on my fathers side). First man born in Sao Miguel, Nuno Gonsalves
Botelho 1504. It's good to know we are all a huge family. There is so much to
see, you will enjoy. See Nordeste and Nordestinho (they are so beautiful).

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores trip in May

I’m so excited about our trip to the Azores in May, to Saint Michael, Terciera
and Graciosa where my ancesters lived! I’m working with Joao Ventura on the
research but am now interested in eating some good Portuguese food and seeing
some of those fantastic islands! Any suggestions for places to eat in Ponta
Delgada , Angra do Heroismo, and anywhere on Graciosa? Also plan to take a
tour
of Ponta Delgada and maybe Angra, any suggestions? with a group or hire
someone/a driver? We’ll rent a car on Graciosa and have a friend connection
there. Thanks for your help!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Question about Chips in ATM and Bank Cards for travel in the Azores

2013-04-07 Thread Nancy Hoopes
Question about ATM and Credit Cards. Thank you. But does it need to have a
chip? My cards just have a magnetic strip (no chip). I hear a card with a
chip
is needed throughout Europe. Nancy

travel in the Azores

My Bank of the West card has always worked in every ATM in the Azores. I use it
to get cash in euros (the daily maximum is 200 euros, regardless of any higher
limit your bank might set). It's always been accepted as a credit card when I
needed it, though in grocery stores there can be some confusion because
"everybody" uses debit cards rather than credit cards. My card is actually a
debit card, but I have to treat it as a credit card in such a situation.

Before you go, it's always a good idea to notify your bank or credit card
company you will be going to Portugal and using your card. Because I go for
twelve weeks (I know, lucky me!) I don't want my bank wondering why my card is
being used for so long outside the U.S. Fortunately, Portugal is a
low-incident
of fraud country so there's rarely any problem. In contrast, Brazil is high in
fraud and I twice had to call my bank from Rio to question because my card
didn't work. The problem was cleared up within five minutes, and I was fine
until a few days later because someone at the bank hadn't noted I would be in
Brazil for a few weeks. On the second call, everything was fine the rest of the
trip.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Sao Miguel Trip

Just got back from Sao Miguel. Thanks to taxi-tour driver, we found family
still
living on the same hill (lomba) in the same small village where they have lived
for generations. Driver found someone to get me in the church and locked
cemetery gate. I can't speak Portuguese so he spoke for me. The people
working
in the Archives in both towns were great. It was a wonderful trip. Nancy

2013-08-15 Thread Nancy Hoopes
Eric, I don't have any of the other names you mentioned.  In 1829, the Vicar of
the church Nossa Senhora da Piadade was Monsignor Manuel Fernandes Pitta.  In
1910, when they got off the ship Romanic,  Joao Pitta and Manuel Gomes were
living in the same house in Taunton, Mass. They may have been related or not.
In 1910,  Joao was 39, Manuel was only 16.   On the same ship, same date with
them is Manuel Ignacio who listed his father in Canhas as Manuel Pitta Ignacio.
I have a Carolina de Jesus born 1867 in Canhas but she wasn't a Pitta.

2013-08-16 Thread Nancy Hoopes
I need to start using the Madeira genealogy group website for this side of the
family, when I get it.  Several generations back are only from Canhas. I don't
think any of the names you mentioned are relatives.  I do have de Silva and de
Jesus but only from Canhas.   Thank You for answering.  Nancy H.

Hi Nancy,

Dionisia de Jesus came in March 1912 to Boston, maybe thru New York-- her
Husband Joao da Silva do Pomar Junior had just died within the year.  She
brought her 3 sons Manuel (12 yrs old), Agostinho (9 yrs old--my wife's
grandfather), Domingos (6 anos), Alfredo was left for 3 to 4 years in Madeira.
They settled in Taunton Mass where the family stayed until the 1980's.

Joao da Silva do Pomar, I think was born 25 Sep 1862, Arco da Calheta, Madeira
parents were Maria de Jesus and Antonio da Silva das Fontas.  As you can see I
have many holes and unverified information.  I hope this helps.

2013-09-23 Thread Nancy Hoopes
Lisa, thanks for sharing the cousins found story.   I had a similar experience
on Sao Miguel last May. Taxi driver found the family name in the village and I
met a few cousins and saw the old lava rock home. It was a joyful happy tearful
experience for me after searching microfilms for so long for my grandmothers
side.   Everyone was so helpful and friendly.  I also had documentation and
pictures with me.  Hope you get to go soon. It's so beautiful.  Nancy H.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Trip - Cousins Found

Hello Everyone!

I gathered some genealogical clues for my uncle who took a trip to the Azores.
This is his story which he gave me permission to share.  I thought everyone
here on the list would enjoy it!  It's inspiring me to plan my own trip!!!

Lisa Caetano Harley
Southern Cal
Researching: Topo, Sao Antao and Ribeira Seca on Sao Jorge
Piedade, Lajes do Pico on Pico

Lisa,

We had a great trip !  13 days in  Terceira visiting with Shirley's 7000
cousins and one day in Sao Jorge looking for any relatives I might find.

I was concentrating on relatives of Isabella (on the Caetano side) since she
stayed in Sao Jorge and the Descendants  list you gave us had her husbands name
and the names of her 5 children.  We went to the Civil Registry office in Angra
de Heroismo  in Terceira because all of the records  for the central group of
Azorean Islands  are now kept there and are fully computerized. However, since
the data we were interested in was old , we could only get it in the Civil
Registry in Calheta in Sao Jorge.  They did call Calheta and they sent us some
information (not much).

Through some of the folks on Terceira who knew somebody who knew somebody in
Sao Jorge , we arranged for a taxi driver who was originally from the Topo area
and was old enough to possibly know many of the families in that area.  We flew
to Sao Jorge (Velas) ,  met our driver, Antonio, and took him for coffee at a
small café to discuss what we wanted to do .  At first, he didn't seem like a
very outgoing guy and we were concerned that he wouldn't be as helpful or as
interested as we might like to be able to accomplish our mission.  He later
proved us wrong ! He said that he knew some people in the Topo area with that
name.  Our first stop after that was the Civil Registry office in Calheta.
There were two people working there and no other customers.  It was slow at
first when we asked for information but after a little bit (we showed them the
2 old family photos which I figured were from 1894 and 1914)  they really got
into it and were whipping
out old tattered  books and and getting pretty excited looking for Goncalves
family information.  They found information starting from Isabella's children
down (4 of the five were deceased (no surprise there)  and we ended up with
some information about Isabella's grandchildren, and where they might live.  At
that point, our driver said that he thought he knew one of them.  By that time,
we had been there about 40 minutes to an hour or so.

So we drove to Santo Antao (which looked like the end of the world to me) and
our driver stopped at a small store (really small) to ask a guy he knew about
the family.  The road at the corner was Canada de Castanha mentioned in the
death certificate for my great grandmother, Victorina.  The man said that the
house was still there but uninhabited.  He also told us where to find one of
Isabella's grandsons.  We walked up the road and took a picture of the old,
small house .  There was a cow in front and I looked in the windows but
couldn't see much but Shirley took some pictures.

Then we went to the house where he said the grandson lived.  In the Azores,
they don't seem to have doorbells so you just stand outside and shout and hope
somebody comes out so that's what the driver did and a guy looks out the window
and comes  outside.  We explained  who we were and we were looking for possible
long-lost relatives.  He was skeptical at first but then , after showing him
some documents and the pictures of our great grandparents, he became
interested.  We talked to him at length and found out that he was  Angelo
Goncalves,  son of Jose Silveira Goncalves , son of Isabel.  He is 72 years
old,  but he looked young, like in his late 50s, a nice-looking guy, short and
was friendly once we established our relationship.  His wife had passed away
and he lived with his son in a small but modern-looking house.  As we were
talking, his son came home for lunch – he is a bombeiro (fireman).  He's a
handsome-looking fellow, tall and
dark and quite friendly also.  His name is Antonio Goncalves.  We took
pictures and then Angelo told us where his sister Natalia lived up the road a
piece.

Went there, our driver Antonio shouted again at the door and

2012-01-03 Thread Nancy Hoopes
Hello Nancy, my grandmother went under the name Nicolina Moniz Couto, born 1891
in Nordestinho. She came to New Bedford about 1907. Her birth record shows her
father as Francisco Moniz Furtado Jr. (not Couto) from Nordestinho, for her
mother it shows Maria da Luz (Franco) from Mosteiros, Sao Miguel. Further
back,
Francisco Moniz Furtado (Sr) and Anna Jacinta Pimentel, also Joao Luz Franco
de Medeiros and Rosa Pacheco.Going back to her parents marriage records, it
shows Couto, not Furtado.Mosteiros is on the other side of the island. I'm
having trouble reading the old script in terrible handwriting. Nancy

Hi Nancy,

My Coutos are mostly from Arrifes. Those who came to the U.S. settled in New
Bedford or Fall River. Do you know the full name of the grandmother who
settled
in New Bedford/Fall River? We probably don't have a connection, since we're
talking about different sides of the island. But it's worth a try.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Madeira Passports

2012-02-29 Thread Nancy Hoopes
Can anyone tell me how to get a copy of a passport that was issued in Madeira
in
1910. I know the date & passport number & village. I'm trying to get a
picture
of my grandfather. Thank you. Nancy

[AZORES-Genealogy] Nordestinho Research

2012-03-21 Thread Nancy Hoopes
I found several Couto families, some live on the hill of Algarvia (lomba
Algarvia), parish of Nordestinho. Some live on the bald hill of Saint Anthony
(calvo de lomba de Santo Antonio) Nordestinho. It seems whatever hill they
live on - they still belong to the parish of Nordestinho. I found a connection
between the Furtado Couto name going back to 1872 (Maria, daughter of Francisco
Moniz Furtado Couto, lomba de Algarvia, d'esta frequesia Nordestinho. Some of
the birth records on family trees show Algarvia, but the birth records on the
archive site may be under Nordestinho. Nancy

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Nordestinho Research

2012-03-26 Thread Nancy Hoopes
Thank you for the good information. Has anyone heard of The Stewardships of
the
Bald in Nordestinho. Does it have something to do with Calvo de Lomba (Bald
Hill) in that village.

These are like areas or neighbourhoods within the parish district of
Nordestinho. Some may have their own chapels. If you can't find
someone in Nodestinho, try Nordeste or Achada or Achadinha. Sometimes,
even Salga and Agua Retorta or Faial da Terra. The names you have a re
quite common in these villages.
