[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry request

2017-06-08 Thread Pat Frade
I have finally found a way to request that the Azores Islands microfilms be
scanned/indexed and made available on Ancestry. Cheri and Rosemarie - we love
you and all you do for us. If Ancestry would do this, it would make Azores
Genealogy so much easier. I would ask that everyone on this list make a
request, let Ancestry know that those islands have information that many of us
want/need. They probably think they are so small, but we want the information
in an easier format!!!

Go to:
https://support.ancestry.com/kA21500QEDU?name=Providing-feedback-about-Ancestry-1460088569413&language=en_US&fromCase=<https://support.ancestry.com/kA21500QEDU?name=Providing-feedback-about-Ancestry-1460088569413&language=en_US&fromCase=1>

Click on the Suggestion box

Click on Historical record collections

Type a request.
Here is my request: I am very interested in having the microfilms from the
Azores Islands scanned and indexed so they are available on Ancestry. I belong
to a Google Group--Azores Genealogy and there are many in the group that are
active in Azores Genealogy. We have yearly conferences where we are taught how
to read the old priest's handwriting. It would make a huge different for all of
us if these records could be scanned and index. I pray that this request may be
considered. Thank you so much!

If everyone would make a request, it may help our cause.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Microfilms discontinued

2017-08-03 Thread Pat Frade
Please refer to this article: the microfilms are being discontinued.

https://familysearch.org/blog/en/microfilm-distribution-discontinued-august-31-2017/

>From my last post a few months ago, I think Rosemarie said that the microfilms
>are on disc. I think they need to be index so they can be put online and
>searchable (that is the key word).

I would ask Cheri or Rosemarie to call the SLC Family History Library and ask
the Portuguese Librarian to set up a time at the conference where we could meet
together (maybe right after dinner) where questions can be asked/answered.

My understanding is very basic - but I am really pushing for these records to
be indexed. What that mean - and please verify this with the librarian - we
wouldn't necessarily need to learn to read the old Portuguese script. We could
type in a name, and the image will come up along with the "transcribe"
information. I just looked up a name in FamilySearch - the name was Helen
Evans, residence in California, and the top result was a census record, on the
right side is the original document, and on the left side is the transcribe
infor. On Ancestry you get the transcribed information, or it may look for a
name in a document (like a newspaper).

The documents would have to be indexed (transcribed) by a person, I have seen
it done. There is an army of people who are indexing records - my neighbor was
working on the WWII veterans records. We just need to know IF the Azorean
records have been indexed, if not where are they in the queue and if they are
in the queue how many petitions would it take to move it forward.

Let's talk more at the conference.

Maybe Marilyn and I will be able to find the connection once we meet in SLC. I

Thanks to George Pacheco, he found 4 generations for me. And since the village
of Fajanzinha is fairly small, I thought there maybe I could find someone
distant cousins on this list. So if you have a Fajanzinha line, drop me an

Here are a few names: Frade, Henriques, Machado, Fraga, Avelar.

Katharine-
Here is my Henriques line (from Fajazinha):
Ana Tomasia Henriques (1882-1961)
Father was: Manuel Maria Henriques (1831-1870)
And his father was Manuel Joaquim de Fraga

I have no idea how Fraga turned into Henriques.

Ana Tomasia Henriques had 3 brothers: Antonio, Jose, and Joao.

Repost for Katharine Baker:

To my considerable dismay, I've begun concluding that there may have been 2
HENRIQUES lines in Fajãzinha -- or at least that their common ancestor goes
very far back -- because thus far I've been unable to connect my line to
anyone else's with whom I've communicated on the matter. Has anyone else
had that experience as well? Katharine.

Cheri,
I'm not up on genealogy, but I know they plan to digitize all the films. May I
suggest that when you are in Salt Lake for the workshop, maybe you could find
out when the Azores films will be done - or maybe we could all request that
they be given a "higher" priority. That would help many of us!
