Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] What to keep-what to throw away

2019-09-27 Thread Sonia P Pacheco
I'm pipe in: you can also consider donating ALL of your research to the
Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives.
While I agree with Cheri, that good documentation of where information was
found is enough for individuals to trace it back, we actually like to see it
all! All the birth, marriage, death records; the census printouts; the little
notes with family stories! ALL of it! I will always ask if there any any family
photographs that can be donated as well (I will happily make digital copies,
if the family wants to retain the originals) and any other documents that speak
to the family (correspondence, audio-visual, yearbooks, cards, documents
created as part of a business etc).

For those of you who are not familiar with the archive, you can find more
information about us here: https://www.lib.umassd.edu/paa
Individuals interested in donating their archive, can contact me directly.

See if your local genealogy society wants it. You may consider putting it on a
public website such as WikiTree or Ancestry.com for posterity.

Thanks Cheri. The kids don’t seem too interested in any of it and I do have it
on my Family Tree Maker. I have a lot of shredding to docommercial
shredders are too inconvenient for me. I told my kids I was leaving everything
for them to do and their reply was “m..no!! I am keeping all close birth,
baptism, marriage and death records in binders. And printed FTM family lines.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Naturalization act of June 25 1936

2019-07-31 Thread Sonia P Pacheco
This was the Expatriation Act, and it affected women who were married to
non-citizens between 1907 and 1922.

It actually had the biggest impact once the Immigration Act of 1924 was
implemented, especially since the vast majority of non-citizens were unaware
that they needed a special authorization to re-enter the country if they left
(think going on vacation). And if they didn't have that authorization, they
were denied re-entry and were subjected to the quota system, and since the wife
had lost her citizenship, she reverted to her husband's nationality.

Yes, if a woman (born in the U.S.) married an immigrant, she lost her U.S.
Citizenship before 1920 (or 1920s...I have to look up the date). When he
naturalized, she became a citizen again. Women in the U.S. had very few right
before women's suffrage in the 1920s. Cheri
