They should load all that data up on the cloud to be fault tolerant. Likely

[AZORES-Genealogy] Dissertation on São Jorge Velas society and culture

2017-01-01 Thread Victor Soares
I came across this Masters dissertation by Rui Duarte Brasil Marques, *Society
and economy of the council of Velos in the 18th-19th centuries*
<https://sigarra.up.pt/flup/pt/pub_geral.show_file?pi_gdoc_id=726788>,
while searching for a name that appears in the obituary of João de Sousa
Machado
<http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-NORTEGRANDE-O-1780-1797/SJR-VL-NORTEGRANDE-O-1780-1797_item1/P252.html>
on my direct paternal line. (@Rosemarie Capodicci - this is one of our
common ancestors)

It's amazing to read about things like land ownership, agriculture,
aristocracy, living conditions, etc. Most relevant to the people on this
list is the mention of various names. For example, on pg. 55, it contains a
description of a typical land lease using one of my ancestors' contracts:

   - *The new renters, Bernarda Rosa, widow of Domingos António, and her
son Domingos António de Sousa during 6 years had to pay annually in cash
140,000 reis and in goods 18 cheeses of 4 pounds each, 3 of 10 pounds and 8
   barrels(?) of butter.*

There are many other names in this dissertation so if your lines lead you
to the council of Velas in São Jorge you should search through the
dissertation. You may even find the design an ancestor used for branding
their livestock!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Baptism record added as footnote? São Jorge-Norte Grande

2016-12-11 Thread Victor Soares
Hi Rosemarie,
There's no exact date for the birth but the 13th line from the bottom
<http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-NORTEGRANDE-B-1825-1839/SJR-VL-NORTEGRANDE-B-1825-1839_item1/P287.html>
looks like it says she was baptized on ??? Nov 1833. The number of the day
is blurry but I'm guessing, it's "nove" (9) since the first part of the
word reads "no-", before it wraps to the blurry section.

Further down on the last line it says "nasceu no mês de Novembro do ano de
mile oito centos trinta três" (born in the month of November 1833).

To add on to that, the page which the priest chose to add the footnote has
birth dates of: 16 Oct 1833, 5 Nov 1833, her footnote. Then on the next
page, the dates of those births are: 9 Nov 1833, 30 Nov 1833.

I feel safe in setting her birthdate as Nov 1833.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Baptism record added as footnote? São Jorge-Norte Grande

2016-12-11 Thread Victor Soares
Wonderful! Thanks, Aaron! That's indeed the correct entry for my Maria
Miquelina. I ran into this funny piece while translating that entry:

   - Portuguese: o que se atribui a descuido do Vigário Jorge d’Azevedo
   Machado
   - English: which is attributed to the oversight of the Vicar Jorge
   d'Azevedo Machado

It's unfortunate being called out for all history. :)

Hey there, cousin Rosemarie! It's good to know that these things happen.
I'm happy to fill in this documentation gap in my tree.

Thanks!
-Victor

Has anybody else run into this kind of situation? What does the last part

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help confirming names in baptism text

2016-12-04 Thread Victor Soares
Hello,
I'm entering the time period where baptism records include abbreviations.
Since I'm not practiced in identifying these, I'd like to confirm with the
group.

The baptism record is the top-left for Maria, filha de Joze Joaquim:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SJR-VL-NORTEGRANDE-B-1839-1854/SJR-VL-NORTEGRANDE-B-1839-1854_item1/P398.html

Where I'd like help:

   - Line 1: Joze Joaquim d'Azevedo?
   - Line 6: João Joze de Souza?
   - Line 6: Maria de Santo Antonio?
   - Line 11: Antonio d'Azevedo?

Thanks,
-Victor Soares
