I attended the Azores Conference that just ended up today and I want to thank Cheri and Rosemarie for a great series of classes and all the effort they put into making this a great first conference. I hope there will be many more to come. The classes were informative and interesting and were especially helpful to newer researchers. But, I have to say, even being an "old" researcher myself, there is still plenty that I learned here. But, the best part was the folks that were here. Everyone was so friendly and fun to be with and I know I made some new friends these last few days. Plus, it's really nice to be able to put a face and a personality to the people I see posting on this list. So, for those who didn't come, you missed a great time! You might want to seriously think about attending next year. Hope to see you then! [AZORES-Genealogy] Azores Conference in Salt Lake in June - ONE ROOM LEFT!
OK, I said I would be quiet about this for a few weeks, but circumstances have changed. The Salt Lake Plaza called me yesterday and the man who I've been working with told me that they have only ONE ROOM LEFT ON SATURDAY NIGHT. That's it for the whole hotel. He took it and put it back in the Azores Conference block, so it's being held for us. They still have rooms on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights. He didn't tell me how close to capacity they are on those nights. After the room on Saturday night is sold, the choices would be to check out on Saturday or go to a different hotel on Saturday. Maybe I'll think of some other ideas. Also, in the Salt Lake Plaza hotel, you go down the end of one of the hallways and you can see out over Temple Square and see everything. OK, after today, I'll be quiet about this until mid-May. Yesterday's list had only a couple of rooms left. I got a call in the evening from one person attending the conference, and she told me she had booked her room. Rich Williams, the man that I'm dealing with, said it's not a problem if we run out of rooms (in our block). The hotel still has rooms and will still book them at our group rate of $82 (it's better than the AAA rate or the AARP rate). Just tell them Azores Conference (you may need to spell that) or group 8285. The reservation line for the hotel is (800) 366-3684 (toll free in the U.S. and Canada) and the web site is http://www.plaza-hotel.com/ If you have problems, Rich William's direct line is (801) 606-2410 (not toll free). You may also book extra days before or after the conference if you chose to stay longer at the $82 rate. The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel is non-smoking, but I think there was an area outside. I'm pretty sure I remember an area outside the Family History Library (next door) for smokers. There was no caffeinated sodas or coffee in the Library itself, but the gift shop in the hotel and JB's Restaurant (coffee shop - attached to the hotel) had caffeinated sodas and coffee. No alcohol is sold at JB's Restaurant, but there are nearby restaurants with their alcohol licenses that will sell you a glass of wine or beer after reading those records! Please reserve your room today, if you are coming to the conference. Once the hotel runs out of rooms, you will have to book at a different hotel. I don't know if we are all booked on the same floor or not. I know the first 3 or so floors are dorms for a nearby all-girls college. I don't know how they group the guests on the remaining floors. I chose the early-bird registration to coincide with the hotel date, so please drop your $50 in the mail today. After today, it's $60. Looking forward to meeting you in Salt Lake! The last list that the hotel sent me had names that I don't have the registration fee for and I had registration fees from people who had no rooms (as of that date). When I receive your registration in the mail, I send you an email to let you know I have it. So if you don't have an email from me saying I have your registration, check your checkbook to see if you wrote me a check. Some of the mismatch may be due to wanting a roommate. If you are traveling alone and want to share your room, email me directly off list at gfscherim at gmail dot com. If you don't state otherwise, I will assume if you are a man you would prefer a male roommate and if you are a woman, I will assume you want a female roommate. All rooms in Salt Lake are no smoking. For people who are coming in from Canada: The U.S. dollar and Canadian dollar are pretty close right now, so the $50 fee (until Apr. 22) will be just fine. However, American banks like to charge fees (between $15 - $20) on non-U.S. dollars. So, to keep you from spending more money, a money order for $50 (until April 22) will be fine. If you are coming in from another county, email me privately so I can figure out the conversion fee. We have 10 people currently registered and the hotel has 14 rooms left (as of Wednesday evening).
