Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dual citizenship

2017-11-19 Thread MaryAnn Santos
I'm in the middle of applying for citizenship and using this service.

All of the documents from the U.S. must have an "apostille" stamp from the
Secretary of State where the official document is from and the applicant
must show a connection to Portugal.

Best of luck.

Portuguese citizenship

First of all, you need a copy of your grandfather's birth certificate.   That's
where I'm stumped as my ancestor was Jewish so all those catholic birth
registries don't work for me.  You may be luckier!- Shirl -

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dual citizenship

2017-11-18 Thread Cheri Mello
Suzanne C,

This is a genealogy list for researching your ancestors back in time.
However, this topic has come up in the past from genealogists wanting dual
citizenship. I'd search the archive for the rules to obtain Portuguese
citizenship. Some people do need a language test and some need the parent
to have Portuguese citizenship. There are many rules. They were posted
previously. I'd search the archive/web board of this group for "portuguese
citizenship" and if that doesn't turn it up, try "dual citizenship."
Good luck,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Dual citizenship

2017-11-18 Thread sznncarreiro
I am wondering if there is any way that I can get dual citizenship. Both of my
paternal grandparents were born in the azores. They came to the states at
around the age of 20. I assume that means they had automatic Portuguese
citizenship. I know they both got American citizenship, but not sure if they
maintained their Portuguese citizenship, or even how that works exactly. They
are both dead now, as is my father and all of his siblings, so there is no one
I can ask. I would have to research it. I also do not speak Portuguese. Does
anyone know about the requirements and whether anything I have shared here
would be an insurmountable obstacle?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dual Citizenship

2017-01-11 Thread Cheri Mello
David L and others interested in dual citizenship,

Please do an Internet search for the advantages and disadvantages of dual
citizenship.

I'm calling an END OF THREAD to both threads/topics/discussions on dual
citizenship (this one and the previous one).

The purpose of this list:
This mailing list is for anyone researching their genealogy in the Azores.
We discuss genealogy, culture, history, DNA, books, and anything else that
helps in a *genealogical search*. Since this is a fairly busy list,
averaging from 15 to 20 messages a day, topics must be related to
genealogy.

We are veering off topic now. Please use other resources. Thanks for
understanding.

You can search the forum and find the process outlined. I think it was
Tomas Leal or Tom da Costa that outlined it, but I'm not sure.
