Hi Rick, I believe we connected through Sebastiao Machado and Isabel Resendes that were married in Achada in 1699. I don't have access to my entire tree at this moment, you do have this couple correct? RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
Hi Pam, If you click on the person to see the details you seem to get more or most of the name but there are cases where you only get the woman’s first name such as Maria in tree view and in detail. I am beginning to think they transferred the old data by something other than a gedcom and in the transfer it could not read all the names or if it did it scrambled them. Consider my wife’s first name it is “Man Chun” in tree view it shows as Man Pimentel, in details it shows Man Chun Pimentel with “Chun” treated as a middle name. (I had to go to edit to see this). So in going from the old format to the new half of her first name was changed to her middle name. The only thing I have not tried is to delete the whole tree and reenter it and see what happens. There is a huge problem with the new trees and we need to let them know loud and clear we do not like it. Pam which way do you want to change the number of generations? I see you can try and delete some if you have too many. I also notice that it is not showing all the generations I previously had but I can view more of a line by clicking the branch symbol next to the person. In the old format you had to click on the arrow to see more of the line. Also in the old tree you had numbers for each person so you could refer to a number person when communicating to others. This was helpful if there were people that had the same name. You could quickly know that Manuel de Sousa #32 was your connection and not Manuel de Sousa #84. There is no way to do this in the new tree. If you marked it private and then made a Gedcom and then told FTDNA to make it private again, it's like a double negativeit negates what you've already done and UNDOES it. When you export your Gedcom, do 10 generations then upload it to FTDNA. I got 4 hours of sleep last night. Hope Kalani is still up. If not, someone will answer you tomorrow. Hi Denise, I do not seem to recall that we ever established a connection. I know we both have people coming from Achada. We do have a common match with George Mello So we are related somewhere. This new family tree thing on FTDNA is very frustrating in trying to track down connections. In looking on the admin page I was able to find one kit (91556) which you administer. Is there another? Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
Silly me...I got confused with the "add relationship" feature. I thought that when it showed a DNA link with someone in your tree that you clicked there. Today I went to add myself as my mom's daughter to her tree (I had not gone beyond my mom on her Gedcom). I was able to add myself to her tree there. But the possible link icon was not there today. I'm sure we will learn how this works someday. :) Mary On Tuesday, September 9, 2014, Mary Bordi wrote: > Been playing! > > I need to redo my gedcom. And my mom's. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
Eric, I don't think your statement is completely true. I have been in contact with ftDNA today. Cheri has already stated that she did 4 months of Beta testing. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. In this case, you can tell the designers what you don't like about their program, but you can't make them change it. Here is what they said: "Our beta test was completed by people with both computer and genealogy experience, then we released the Family Tree to about 10% of our most regular users for further testing. Sometimes all of the best planning and testing still does not catch all of the problems, unfortunately. We are getting much of the same feedback regarding names and sizing of the tree and I will add your comments to the mix. Thank you!" I then thanked them for the quick response and concerns. This was their reply: Tish -- Anytime! I love getting honest feedback from our customers, especially when it backs up what we've been telling the designers. Thank you for *your* time! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
Edgar, I went into my file and changed the mistakes also. I had the double surnames and I just deleted the middle one and it comes out alright. My problem is that the women with the given name and a religious name was not showing on the main page. I went it and put the Sao Joao or de Jesus in their surname field and it comes out correctly on the main 'tree'. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
I just never put in "de" or "da" in my family tree or gedcom names for this very reason. The reason is to avoid this very problem. "De" or "da" is only a preposition and it only means "of". In a message dated 9/10/2014 2:57:29 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, azores@googlegroups.com writes: I wonder if it could be due to how FTM wrote the Gedcom. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
Denise, Is Rick not showing up in your list of DNA relatives, or in the gedcom program? If it is in the DNA relatives maybe you just didn't get enough of the same DNA. If it is in the gedcom program I would say they have a great deal of tweaking to do before their program is usable. I do think they are trying, though. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
Thank you Eric for your comment. I have my names entered a certain way - So let's say I have José de Paiva (the de is showing up in the middle name field for some reason) and you have the same person as Jose Paiva - then we will not link because of the difference in his name? That is what I am trying to figure out. So for me I have no need to change the names in the edit field because I have no idea how someone else would record the name. Rick and I have a known connection that we documented years ago but he is not showing up in my list of relatives. I'm just wondering if this could be why. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
You can edit names and information for individuals in the Family Tree In either Family View or Ancestry view, click on the person, click view profile The edit button is at the top. You can then correct spelling, names and birth and death dates. You can add photos. I doubt that FTDNA is going to fix the spelling issue on their end, so I'm going through my page and fixing them. Hi Cheri, I have the issue of not connecting due to spellings I guess. I have tied in with Altino and Rick, among many others on the list, and they do not show up as connections. Any suggestions? Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
Mary B, Yes, keep on playing and making a list of things. You got double first names and I got the middle name dropped. As a beta tester, I reported the José showing up as José. I sent it to them both as ANSI and ANSEL. Just add it to your list of things that you found with the trees Yes, your mom doesn't show as a link because you ended with her on that Gedcom. I had my mom's DNA kit listed as H. Louise. In my Gedcom, she is Helen Louise. That is why it wouldn't link her. I had to change it. So if have Joe Mello and you have him as Jose de Melo, with the same birth and everything, it may not show the link. Altino's my dad's 2nd cousin, but I have the surname as Mello and I think he has it as Demelo, so it won't show Altino as a link. This is a problem. Ugh. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree DNA's new family trees (Gedcom) is up
Been playing! I need to redo my gedcom. And my mom's. I guess I didn't use ASCII characters in the names (had noticed it before) so names like José end up looking like José (If that even shows up here in email...!) It would be difficult to match similar names in other trees. Some womwn's have double first names... Maria Maria, Rosa Rosa, Joana Joana... Also, For me, it showed my mom as a possible link to me but then for "relationship" I was only given the choices of spouse, sibling, son, daughter. It wasn't clear if the relationship was hers to mine or mine to hers. My mom doesn't show a link to me, but I don't think I'm on her gedcom--I ended it with her! :) I'm on my iPad so I should check it out on my desktop computer. At least this is better than Ancestry--I can no longer view my DNA matches there on my iPad. :) Mary On Tuesday, September 9, 2014, Cheri Mello wrote: > For those wanting to upload their Gedcoms to FTDNA, you can do it. > > For others, you can play with the new family tree feature. > > Don't know what they did with my 4 hours of beta testing. For those wanting to upload their Gedcoms to FTDNA, you can do it. For others, you can play with the new family tree feature. Don't know what they did with my 4 hours of beta testing. Looks like they didn't take a single suggestion. Such as Maria de Jesus. I told them not to assume the last name in the field was a last name. So they deleted it.
