Ok I think I figured out the error I made and confirmed my suspicions. The name Jose* Arnauldo* do Amaral, an unusual name to be sure. Sometimes written as Arnaudo, Arnaldo. I have some of this line. Yes Arnaud is from German aristocracy. However, this particular Arnaud, as you can see, is a first name not a surname. I have come across it a few times in Povoacao. I don't think there is any connection with the Arnaud's that Margaret referenced. But you never know until you keep digging.
